Good god coldfire, I'll put the smack down on you if you do this again.
Caps should be at the begining of sentances.
There are heaps of codecs - so you probably still have the wrong one, but it says it's a general error and could be almost anything.
And besides, I'm not a big fan of helping people watch their w4r3z 4n1m3 !1!
Also, isn't Windows Media Player 9-and-above Spyware???

you sound just like a friend of mine, but not as parnoid, he didn't get XP because of the spyware, until he couldn't play hl2 on 98 and was forced to.
but on topic, just donwload DivX it's all i do, it'll give you the codecs you need, but i believe it's also spyware, but i doubt u really care about that
and get rid of MediaPlayer 10, get like 6, As soon as i got the new versions all i had was trouble.

Simple way around spyware factors in media players and the like: Tell your firewall to disallow them access the internet.
Although I wasn't aware WMP had those aspects :/ I've refused to install WinXP because it's too controlling and it's got all kinds of silly restrictions about installing pirated software...
Anybody got more info?

Eh?
Lol. You're insane!
As for WMP...
You can probably get an uninstaller from ms, then reinstall it fresh.

You'll need an activation crack for XP.
PM me for more info.

Oh yeah, forget about Windows Media Player 9.
Get Media Player Classic.
It sh!ts all over WMP.

As far as I'm concerned wmp does the job, winamp was good while it decided to work, but realplay was the most useless piece of *^&* i have ever had the misfortune of installing.

First time i've heard of this.
Never had any restrictions installing any software at all on my PC.
About the closest thing is sp1 and sp2 refuse to install on XP machines using one of about 6 well known pirated cd keys.
Haven't had any problems with WMP10.
It plays video, which is what I want it to do.

I think I have WMP10, it's pretty cruddy.
I mainly use my other video watching programs, it just sits installed on my comp.
=/ Waste of an upgrade.

Buh?
I already said, I don't use XP.
I'm a Windows 98 gal at heart.

Does it pop up with an error whenever you open it and then immdidalty close down on your pc too?
Or did it break in some other way.
I would love to get this fixed cause its so irritating not being able to bring entire folders of music into the playlist.

The only reason I upgraded from WMP 8 to 10 was to make the MSN Messenger 7 "What I'm Listening To" work for iTunes...
I use iTunes for my main music, WinAmp for other audio files, PowerDVD for DVDs, and Nero ShowTime for other video files.

Meh, WMP does the job and is included with the OS.
Installing something like Winamp or Media Player Classic means addind additional software for little to know additional benefit (No, rebelling against the "eveil Microsoft Empire" doesn't count).
Oh, and versions 9 and up have this:

And in any case, rebelling against the "Evil Microsoft Empire" by not using their media player while still using their operating system is a bit pointless.

the only reason i use WMP...
At least for music...
When it comes to video, MP10 decides it preforms illegal operations and shuts down...
I just use VLC for anything other than music (and even then sometimes ) its free, open source and can play almost anything even quicktime except RM (which i just convert to wav anyway)
and...
The best part, the vid i am watching can actually become my background

Little or no additional benefit?
Media Player Classic supports a LOT more file formats, including subtitle streams, has a ton of built-in filters that practically makes most other playback software redundant (with the exception of PowerDVD for DVD playback).
It also provides advanced setup options that puts WMP to shame.
This is all implemented without a horrid GUI, it's neatly distroed in a 2MB package or less.

I only care about three video file formats: DivX, XviD and MPEG (all of which WMP plays fine).
Subtitle streams?
Meh. filters? *yawn* DVD playback?
WMP does that (even without software like PowerDVD which has me puzzled to say the least).
Advanced setup options?
I barely use WMPs "basic" setup options, anymore would just go to waste.
Horrid GUI? It does the job and I don't have a problem with it myself.
In fact, I'd go so far as saying the old media player (which MPC is based upon) has a much, much worse GUI than WMP7-10.
2Mb package? I have a 120Gb hard drive, we're talking fractions of a percentage point difference.
So again, no additional benefit.

Minor nitpick - those are codecs, not file formats.

I got given a cool codec/player package called klitemediacodecs don't know where you can get it from though.
But it is the best and will run everything, no probs whatsoever!

It is good, but I don't think it's updated anymore.

I'd recommend just getting ffdshow-alpha and ac3filter instead of one of those mega codec packs.
Does 99% of everything you'll find and won't screw up your system.

I'd just go grab vlc player of bsplayer or one of the few like that.
all codecs are contained into the one program.
Personally i use vlc.
Plays everything i want it to play, except RM (but who uses that?).
Though it has an ultra basic GUI, knowing that i never need to install codecs is good.
And it uses way less cpu than WMP so i can have less slow down.
My WMP is still sitting at 9, it does the job.
All i use it for is music.

So where can i get this vlc player, is it apart of bs player cos i tried that and it was a load of bs like the name.

Anybody know what Codecs I should Download in order to get .mp4 to work correctly?
Preferably ones that make them work with WinAmp.

DivX should handle MP4.
You will also need the AAC filter from here (for sound).
(Winamp is terrible for playing video IMO)

VLC is great, until you need to handle .SSA subtitles.
It then proceeds on to **** itself royally.
Personally, since I do a fair bit of encoding, I tend to use the component codecs themselves, instead of going for something like ffdshow.
As long as people don't go round toting Nic's build of XviD from July 2003 and a build of ffdshow from around the same time, like some people in my class at TAFE do, this guy even had the guts to say that he was a codec master to one of my classmates.
I could only sit there in the corner and chuckle, it was too funny to interrupt.

Dudes...
Get MPC here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/
Get VobSub here:
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/vobsub.html
It will display virtually any subs you can imagine.
