Using Opera do I need anti-spyware protection? - Opera browser - Opera Community
Using Opera do I need anti-spyware protection?
I installed a free trial of super antispyware for a couple of weeks and in all the scans I did nothing came up, I am planning in unninstalling this software because I would conclude that by using Opera I am safe of adware and spyware, am I wrong by coming to this conclusion?

Spyware can enter your system even without an internet connection, all it needs is an infected medium.
Using Opera just makes infection a lot harder than using IE.
Install a real time antispyware protection - Windows Defender and Spybot S&D are the best and keep Super as a backup (stop it from automatically launching at boot).
The best way is to use an antivirus with antispyware already in, like Avast.
I use all of the above because , due to the extremely fluid spyware developement, no security app is 100% efficient.

Most spyware comes from viruses or files you would download - you know, you download this super game or whatever and maybe it even is, but when installing the program it also installs spyware.
Opera can't prevent that.
Opera won't install the spyware itself, but it can't stop you from doing so.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is excellent.
Nod32 is an ace antivirus, but Malwarebytes (free) app actually found even more spyware.
Software can be bad without being spyware or a virus.
Spyware is a software that gets installed either because you don't know it uses your connection to send information about you, or because the legit software installer "also" installed spyware on the sly.
Google Toolbar is spyware, since google likes to harvest information about you when you use it.
I use scroogle and never install toolbars.

If i might add my two cents worth...
After frustration with Spybot conflicting with Opera cookies....discovered: http://www.superantispyware.com/ .
Despite the hokey name it is really an excellent spyware detector and remover.
The small download size, nearly daily data base updates, and developer support (forums) and no problems with anti virus programs (Avast in my case) are noteworthy attributes.
The free version doesn't not offer real time detection, however it is an excellent tool to check your system.
You might want to check it out.
Tip: If you decide to purchase...you might stick with free version for a few days...and you will be offered a chance to purchase Pro Version for 19.95 as opposed to regular 29.95 USD.

Thanks for the advice and "super antispyware " is the same software I am referring in my original post, I seem to like it but it hasn't found a thing in my computer and I believe is due to the fact that I use Opera.

Try Prevx 3.0:

Best anti-malware software.
SUPERANTISpyware, Malwarebytes and a-Squared are good too.

Nice,
I just tried it and it found a couple files but the downside is it doesn't remove them unless I buy the program

I use avast antivirus pro 4.8 and without a doubt, to me it's the best i've used.
It even detects malware in scripts.

... but can give false positives like every other anti-yxz-program, as happened here today.
I wrote the script, there was no virus or other yxz in it for shure.
Opera is quite good at informing about phishing sites and quite resistant against scripting attacks from websites, but it is all worthless without proper use of brain.exe

I would reccomend that you have an antimalware software installed.
Realtime scan is not required if you are prudent enough and sensible enough.
I have MalwareBytes Antimalware installed in my system.

No, you really must have a real-time scanner.
There have been numerous times in which i've stumbled on to what should have been perfectly safe web pages that were actually compromized and full of hidden malware.

It depends on your system.
Spybot S&D only updates weekly & it missed a trojan once on my computer (Vista HP).
I don't think it is as good as SUPERAntiSpyware, as SAS found the trojan that Spybot had missed.
MBAM is good as well, but prone to false-positives.
I uninstalled Spybot.

I think Prevx is essentially rogue-ware & I found that it is unstable, as many have.
If you are using Windows, MS Defender with a good AV & a couple of freeware on-demand scanners like SUPERAntiSpyware & MBAM are the best.
I do recommend SpywareBlaster however, especially if you use IE at all.
It is freeware, but as with MBAM & SAS, the freeware version require you to manually update them.
SpywareBlaster only updates occasionally though, so it is low maintenance.
It is a good 'passive' extra layer of protection.

Trojans should be detected by your Antivirus, Spybot, as his name says, it's an antispyware - similar but definitely not the same.
Yes, Super is marginally better, but remember - none are 100% efficient and without a real-time scanner you are in a far greater danger than if you use one from a less powerful than the best app.
BTW i discovered that Defender lacks efficiency regarding Registry protection.
On this TeaTimer is, in my opinion, the absolute best.

OK, I was using Norton AV (I don't use Norton now) then, so I am not so sure the old Norton was really up to detecting malware.
As to the efficacy of Spybot, I know many people rate it very highly, I don't, it might find 7 or 8 tracking cookies compared to SAS finding 70 or 80.
I don't think that it (Spybot) is particularly Vista compatible either (what is?) & I think 1.6.2 had a lot of bugs.
SAS is updated every 8 hours & even with the freeware version the upgrading is quick & simple, unlike Spybot.
I have never had a problem with SAS.
MBAM is prone to false-positives & if you are not careful it will try & remove your entire OS on a bad day.
Having said that though, it is a good scanner & quarantines everything suspicious first automatically.
If MBAM says you are malware free, you almost certainly are.
It is best to have a layered approach anyway.
I will never use Spybot again, but if it works for you it is OK.
Defender is probably a bit old now, but is a useful addition to a layered defence.

To be truthfull, no program is 100% in stopping malware.
They'll always find a way through.

word.
The best way is to keep your system up-to-date.
This includes the os itself, the browser and its plug-ins (!) and other applications.
Do not surf with administrator privileges.
It is always recommended to use an on-access anti-virus scanner (at least in windows ).
In addition to this scanner, it is recommended, to have an additional on-demand scanner installed (do not think, it is good to install multiple on-access scanners).
the MOST important thing is, to control your browsing behavior.
And do not download and/or install suspicious software, like warez/cracks etc.
. and do not click those colorful ads on websites you do not know .

Norton is worse than any malware it's meant to be protecting you from.
Obtrusive, resource hogging piece of junk.
I'd rather use window's built in scheduler and have malware bytes or superantispyware run a scan every week than have that lot running constantly.
Far more resource friendly and powerful than anything mentioned here is a modified hosts file as detailed here .
It's not as thorough, but it's a one hit deal and you'll never notice it's blocking a whole lot of nasty from your computer.
