If you use MSN messenger urgent warning

The malware commonly known as Winfixer aka Errorsafe is being distributed via MSN Messenger banner advertisements.

This has been reported to secure@microsoft.com and they and the MSN ads team are investigating. http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/archive/2007/02/18/591493.aspx

If you need to keep in contact with MSN buddies there's an easy work-around in the meantime. Trillian Basic is free, get it here: http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/ It'll connect to the MSN server and show you the same buddy-list etc, but doesn't display the ads, so it'll be immune.

Thanks ! I NEVER click on those banner ads or 'there's a problem on your PC etc.' Do we need the hosts file download?

You don't even need to click on the ads in many cases to be infected, if your security settings are set wrong  or you are NOT up to date with all updates it will auto install through security holes in IE & possibly Java and/or flash player read Sandy's blog for more details but 's advice is very good advice

Messenger is up-to-date as is KIS and flash.

Will read more on the blog.

I rarely use MSN.

Nobody ever seems to want to talk to me.

Glad you mentioned that , as my daughter phoned me to say that for some reason her firewall had blocked all access to the internet, and unblocking it sorted things out but mentioned that I am sure she said she had 'winfixer' showing somewhere. I didn't show up in add/remove, but not being there I couldn't check everything. Anyway, I shall have to try and nip down there and have a look, as winfixer rings a bell...

Would Winfixer show up in HJT log?

Would KIS pick it up?

KIS should pick up most versions but won't always pick up the installer which seems to change almost hourly so until we find a new version & submit it, the AV can't detect Most winfixer versions do show in a HJT log or at least some sign of it

I'm using Trillian in meantime Please check log - I don't see anything but I'm no expert! It looks fine Kitty if you have winfixer/error nuker you would know it because of all the blasted pop ups telling you a load of lies and insisting you were infected & must buy their "wonderful, best thing since sliced bread" pile of crap which they insist is the only thing to protect you

Thanks - much appreciated.

Will use Trillian till things look better tho?

I would use trillian permanently why use msn messenger at all when trillian does everything it does & better & safer except having all the crap that most people don't want anyway

Can't web cam unless you pay though, and I web cam with my family in UK & NZ!

And I do like all the winks etc....

And I can add my own emoticons
