Fat baby denied health care by gracious health insurnce company. - Baltimore Sun talk forum
Now babies are being denied insurance for being too fat.
Yes insurance companies are needed.
Quote: : "I could understand if we could control what he's eating.
But he's 4 months old.
He's breast-feeding.
We can't put him on the Atkins diet or on a treadmill," joked his frustrated father, Bernie Lange, a part-time news anchor at KKCO-TV in Grand Junction.
"There is just something absurd about denying an infant."
Bernie and Kelli Lange tried to get insurance for their growing family with Rocky Mountain Health Plans when their current insurer raised their rates 40 percent after Alex was born.
They filled out the paperwork and awaited approval, figuring their family is young and healthy.
But the broker who was helping them find new insurance called Thursday with news that shocked them.
"'Your baby is too fat,' she told me," Bernie said.

The child wasn't denied health care ...it was denied insurance coverage.
There's a bit of difference.

There's a huge difference.
Not that I'm agreeing with it, based on the limited amount of information we have about it.

Read more at: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/1..._n_317337.html Isn't that rationing?
I thought the public option in the healthcare bill was what was suppose to cause rationing, didn't realize rationing was already happening

You really want to attempt that argument?
Do you think that children of uninsured parents get the same level of health care as children of insured parents?

His parents were insured and Alex was insurable with their existing plan.
They were just looking for a cheaper rate.

I thought the public option in the healthcare bill was what was suppose to cause rationing, didn't realize rationing was already happening It isn't rationing, it is screening for pre-existing conditions/risks.
The family in the story has health insurance already.
They were shopping for a new policy because their current provider raised their premiums 40% because of the (obese) baby.
Really this is just another example of people confusing health care with health insurance.
And it is understandable considering our current health care system, which often conflates the two.
'Insurance' is a simple economic concept.

I wonder if that's because the obese baby is a greater risk?
Nah...they saw a fat baby and their greed genes kicked in...

Hmmm....number of people in the family increases by 33%, the extra third being an infant (you know, those little critters that need lots of care & attention in the first few years?).
Their insurance rates go up 40%.
Doesn't seem unreasonable to me.
Perhaps Bernie & Kelli should have realized that their insurance premiums would go up when they had a kid, before having the kid.

And that the obese kid is at risk for issues beyond what normal kids are.
My heart goes out to the parents.
There's something wrong with the kid and I hope they can find out what and treat it.
I also hope they didn't drop their previous plan that had the boy named.

There's a bit of difference.
For practical purposes, and in this country, not much of one.
For most folks, health care is too expensive for them to self-insure.
This is partially due to the fact that insurance companies squeeze medical practitioners, while politicians demand they treat everyone - so the uninsured guy essentially pays retail plus, and covers the cost of the guy with no ability to pay at all.
It is patently ridiculous for the company to deny coverage for an infant.
Companies behaving like this are why we have people agitating for single-payer.
When it comes, and I suspect it is coming, these companies will have only themselves and their short-sighted policies to blame.
