Best for playing MP3s & Divx files - PS3 or Xbox360? - The DVD Forums
I'm thinking about getting a PS3 to use for a bit of gaming in my bedroom, along with ideally replacing the Xbox Media Center that i use through a Wireless Bridge to play music and films from my 1tb network drive.
A while ago i had a chance to have a go on a PS3 but sods law it wouldn't play music or videos through the network drive i had then as it wasn't DLNA certified.
I managed to play files from a DVDRW and USB fine, but i'm looking to play across the network directly from the network drive.
Which is better for this?
The PS3 or the Xbox360?
I know the PS3 plays quicktime trailers really well but have no experience of using the Xbox for this.
Not too fussed on deciding between them on the gaming abilities - i really am impressed with XboxLive but 90% of the time it'll just be used for watching films/tv and listening to music.
Can you download demos on the PS3?

Not sure which is best, but i have both, and use the 360 entirely for my media streaming.
I think both will do the job, but i have never experienced anything that has made me go damn, i will have to use the ps3 for this, but i have had files do that the other way round (cant remember what though).
I dont think i have turned the ps3 on for about 70 days either
if you are not fussed on gaming side, and like i said, i think both will suit you, then it purely comes down to cost, therefore a 360.

PS3 plays everything I throw at it, and I can hear them as well!

If your setup allows you to use PS3 Media Server than the PS3 is better no doubt.
In fact I can't imagine a situation where I would need to use the 360 over the PS3 for my media playback.
I just got a 2nd PS3 (free with a mobile phone in fairness ) for the bedroom so I can stream my media and play a few games in there as well.
I find the PS3 UI, the XMB, much preferable to the 360's NXE in terms of look and of course the PS3 is the quieter of the two systems in 90% of cases.
If it's just media playback you want though, excluding BluRay support which you may or may not value, it might be worth checking out a Popcorn Hour (I think they're called) as they are supposed to be the new hotness for that kind of thing.

I have both and play the 360 more for games but hands down the PS3 is best for media.
The biggest plus for me is that its noticeably a lot quieter than the 360 which spoils the media experience IMO, plus the PS3 has blu-ray.

I prefer the 360 over the ps3.
It seems to play even the ones that the PS3 struggles with.
I use Tversity to stream to both of the consoles.
If I had any spare money I would probably buy this:
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/960679...C/Product.html
More versatile and has the power to play HD format files.

I've used both, and prefer the PS3.
Being quiet is an advantage, not a lot in it, though, esp if you combine with Tversity or PS3 media server.
Mind, I could never get HD streaming on a 360, but its a doddle on PS3.
PS3 also has the ability to copy stuff to the hard drive, which is a boon if you don't want the PC on all the time.
And, of course, the option to stick in a massive hard drive.
Also, for media purposes, the browser is great for Iplayer and Youtube.
Quality varies, but its a nice thing to have.
I use it more for picking and choosing the week's Radio 7&4 output.

Then your toooons or movie sound is far too low.
The ps3 cannot be hands down better for media, they play the same stuff more or less dont they?
Due to fan noise it plays better media?
Yes the ps3 plays blu-ray, but the poster was saying he wanted to stream.
I have a dedicated room for my stuff, and the 360 drive noise does not spoil any experience.
If this guy has a bedroom setup, and sits 3 feet away, then maybe fair enough, but we do not know
the facts:
both play common media files in one way or another
both play the occasional game
both will do the job for the poster
is cost an issue?
If so, get the 360
if cost not an issue and you like blu-ray, then get the ps3 for sure.

Do either of them allow you to stream media directly from a network drive?
I read Powder's question as if he doesn't want a PC involved, just direct from the NAS.

The bottom line is the PS3 is quieter though, not all movies or episodes are all action all the time, there are times when it is very quiet during a film to build suspense or whatever and in those cases the PS3 would be the preferable choice.
That is an advantage whether you personally chose to acknowledge it or not.

As far as the PS3 is concerned I think it needs to be DNLA enabled but it obviously would not be able to take advantage of any transcoding available through something like PS3 Media Server (of course if you remux the files before hand if needed that is a non-issue).
Not sure about the 360 at all, never looked into using it with NAS, sorry!

Do both work well out of the box, or need modding in any way ?
(is modding even possible/desirable ?)
is either at all prone to getting hot &/or overheating ?
hardware reliability - which is better ?
Any known issues ?
how is each with standard dvd discs ?
what about audio-out options ?
As I only have an old AV amp with optical/single RCA in.

Both work fine out of the box, although both will probably need an internet connection for codecs or firmware updates.
Both get warm after extended periods of time, generally the PS3 fan layout and less cramped interior means it's quieter most of the time.
There are no real reliability issues of any note with the PS3 beyond the norm.
The 360 on the other hand does have, er shall we say, a few problems.
Google will help you out if you need more information.
Both have optical out or can be used with RCA's.

I am definitely looking to play straight from my network drive, but i might occasionally want to stream from a PC.
In the end i have taken the option of ordering a phone contract upgrade and a free PS3 so i'm stuck with that now.
I will be using it for Bluray occasionally, mainly streaming music and tv/films that are 99% Divx format - as i understand it the PS3 can now play a broad range of files.
I will definitely be playing various trailer files through it, along with video podcasts such as Diggnation and would like to do this in up to HD formats.
For those of you who have a PS3 can i do the above ok?
My network drive is a Lacie Network Space and is DLNA enabled http://www.lacie.com/uk/products/product.htm?pid=11089 and i will be transferring my music collection over to it in suitable tagged and itunes friendly format over the coming months.
Can you also play HDDVD/Bluray rips on the PS3 using either a USB flash drive or across the network?
I appreciate network speed could be an issue but i will invest in some powerline adapters if needs be.

Yeah they play across a wired network with no problems, wireless might be a struggle although you can get away with some transcoding tweaks if you're streaming from a PC (PS3 Media Server) and get smooth playback over wireless at the expense of some image quality (how much depends on your layout).
If you go the homeplugs route try and get the 200Mb/s versions as the 54Mb/s versions are sometimes a bit sketchy with HD playback.
Good luck and enjoy!

Buy a proper media player if you want to play media.
They cost less than a PS3 and a little more than a 360.
If you want to play games and have a media player as a secondary option, buy a 360.
If you want to play Blu Ray and have media playing as a secondary feature, buy a PS3.

How about if i want a media player, with a bluray as a secondary feature and gaming as a tertiary option ?
I'll maybe stick to playing High def stuff from USB - presumably you can do that too?
Can you plug in a large capacity usb hard drive and play stuff from that too?
Long term i'd look at something like the Western Digital 1080p media player especially if they make a networkable version.
Tried it and loved the interface - so simple and effective.
