Best player in Tennis (Open era) - Talk Tennis
LOL you think I will say Fed or Nad or Sampras or Borg or Laver?
No... this prize goes to Safin.
He is by far the best player that tennis has seen.
He was funny, athletic, smashed lots of rackets, unique attitude, and just *different*, making it very very entertaining to watch.
That's why Safin is the best.
It will suck to see him go at the end of 09.

Where I play the members are almost unanimous in their belief that Clinton Thomson is the greatest to have ever picked up a tennis racquet.

You should have changed the title of the thread from "Best" to "Most Entertaining".
Safin has been one of the more entertaining players but IMO not the best or the most entertaining.
McEnroe has more meltdowns to his name than Safin does as far as I can remember and I can generally go to YouTube and see them over and over.
As far as the best goes, hard to rate Fedal while they are still playing but my vote goes to Sampras, at least until they retire and then I'll have to reconsider.

Open Era- Sampras
Pre Open- Pancho

So if you exclude all those who played pre-open era id say its Federer
Borg and Sampras would be very close to Federer
Federer gets there for his ability on all surfaces, domination of the field, consistency, slam wins and just sheer numbers

Without a French title, he'll just be the one who "almost" made it but didn't quite cut it, what a shame.

Sampras is the current best in open era, but he is not the perfect GOAT.
We have to realize that the real world is not perfect, and that you can't have everything you want.
Just because Sampras doesn't have the perfect resume(no FO) doesn't mean that he can't be GOAT.
He IS GOAT, but he is not the perfect GOAT.
Nadal is the only player that I see capable of becoming the perfect GOAT if he can keep up his level for at least 5 years.

Safin is funny, he's the only one who came up with dives at the net, funny arguments with umpires, and just funny attitudes on court.
McEnroe was funny too, but he was more of a brat.
Just got mad when he was losing, that's all.

Gosh we all know Vincent Spadea is the GOAT and if he had focused more on tennis instead of his "rapping" career he would have won the past 20 slams in a row.
Fed and Nadal are lucky...duh.

Laver is the "perfect GOAT".
Sampras is behind Laver and Borg on Open era GOAT list.
