Validity of passport where there is already a valid visa to travel to India on Yedda - People. Sharing. Knowledge.
My passport expires in June 2009, I have a 5 year visa which expires in 2010.
I intend to travel to India for 1 month from Feb 2009 to March 2009.
Do I need a new passport or can I travel on the existing passport

Technically speaking when you land in India your US Passport should have at least six months of validity left from your date of entry.
Seems like you will need a new US Passport.
The Indian Visa which is valid through 2010 can be used.
Make sure that when you renew your US passport they cancell it except do no cross out the Indian visa, and return it to you.
You will be presenting two travel documents to Indian entry port.
1) New US Passport vaild for 6+ months
2) Old US passport that has been cancelled and returned to you with the Visa page untampered with.

I have been in touch with the Indian High Commission and they have responded that as the passport is valid till June and I am going to India in Feb, returning in March, the passport will still be valid as well as the visa.
I can travel on that passport.
The 6 month rule only applies when applying for a visa as well as at least 2 blank pages in the passport.
An Indian Consulate said the same.
My worry is that in India the person on the desk is the boss in his own right and he can insist on how he sees it.
