Sleep!! I need sleep!! - Ummah.com - Muslim Forum

I've been having serious problems sleeping for the last month or two.

Some nights I don't sleep at all and most nights no more than 3 hours. Subhan'Allah it's really starting to affect my mood - I seem to be getting stressed out by matters that I would normally take in my stride. My doctor recommended a short course of sleeping pills, but I declined because I don't want to become dependant on such things.

I've tried all matter of natural remedies, but to no avail. I think part the problem is that I have now convinced myself that I wont sleep, so therefore, I don't.

The subconscious mind is a powerful thing. Anyone have any recommendations before I mentally lose it completely and go on a killing spree.

I'm joking, of course I think.

Wa-alaikum salaam Wr I hope you are joking!

But dont joke about sleep deprivation effects bro...

Dont you know people have done crazy things like kill ion their sleep they also see spiders in their shoes when sleep deprived..

Have you experienced that yet?

Lol Ok enough of the joking.

What kinda natural remedies have you tried?

Have you tried having a relaxing bath/shower before sleeping?

Use lavender or something?

What about reading before you sleep?

Have you tried exercising?

Maybe you need to tire out your body or something (although i get the feeling youre probably quite busy and rushed off your feet anyway)?

What about reading Quran before you sleep or continuously odoing Dhikr of Allah (read sleeping duaas and Kalimahs) before sleeping?

Drink some horlicks before you go to bed, it helped my sister

Simple sleeping pills with a low dosage are not addictive Quote: : Main Causes Insomnia is a condition that is caused by something else!

Sometimes it won't be immediately obvious what the causes are in your own case, but the following list might give clues: states of mind - anxiety, depression, worry, anger, grief, anticipating a difficult event change - moving house/city, starting university environment - noise, discomfort, time zone change pain - one of the commonest causes medical conditions - heart, breathing, stomach, digestive, high blood pressure, arthritis, anorexia. recreational drugs - including nicotine, caffeine, heroin, cocaine, amphetamines, LSD, cannabis sleeping pills and tranquillisers - can actually cause sleep disturbance other prescription drugs - including some contraceptives, diuretics, slimming pills, beta-blockers, stimulants. Some causes of insomnia can't be easily dealt with but most can.

Spiders in shoes?

That's nothing, I got served by a giant spider in the supermarket.

Joking, again. Things I've tried - exercise, hot baths with radox and essential oils, chamomile tea, valerian tea, reading boring books and natural sleep remedies such as "Kalms" to name but a few. I can't read Qur'an or do dhikr to help me sleep because I like to concentrate on what I'm reading/saying. for your reply.

Yeah, I'm definitely stressed, but I think that is a effect of the insomnia rather than the cause of it. for the link, I shall have a good read later.

Aahh you make me laugh bro! Hhmmm ok so youve tried all the most obvious things.

Is there something on your mind or is it just a case of finding it difficult to fall asleep?

You know what, i wouldnt over think it if its not been going on for too long inshaAllah.

I actually go through phases like this too- sometimes i find it difficult to sleep at all for like a whole week but by the next week my mind and body is so tired out that as soon as my head hits the pillow im out! I know you want to concentrate and thats excellent mashaAllah but sleeping duaas over and over again really might help BarakAllah Feek bro

Read kalima again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again

There are definitely things "on my mind", but just the normal everyday stresses and strains which I normally cope with rather well, most the time, anyway insha'Allah.

It's more a case of being unable to stop myself thinking about things, like I can't turn my brain off and get into sleep mode. Any dua's for sleep you can recommend insha'Allah?

Spiders in supermarkets remind me of the times we went camping and found spiders on the inside of our towels...

SubhanAllah .. lol they do turn up everywhere you are probably right..

It's a vicious circle..

Can't sleep, get stressed and then you can't sleep.

May Allah make it easy for you brother and give you inner peace ameen!! Try a combination of everything suggested.

Begin to wind down early and mentally prepare yourself for sleep..

Have the bath with the oils etc, have a warm drink..

Don't read or do anything stimulating.

Whatever is in your lists of things you like to do before bed to relaxmake it almost like a ritual. With the sleeping pills..

Just take one if you have a prescription.

You know sometimes just one is enough to bring the cycle back to normal again.

If you have had a lot of nights of broken sleep you have to retrain your body to sleep again.. So a combination of all these things for a few nights, may.

Just help.. insha'Allah you are in our duas insha'Allah

Ameen to your dua. Quote: : Try a combination of everything suggested.

You've tried all the obvious things brother, but have you tried counting sheep at night ...

Or is it cows?? ..

Lol ... j/k Sometimes we just need that kick start ...

Perhaps a low dosage of sleeping pills for a couple of days may be okay ... I went through a very similar phase ....

But I knew the cause of my loss of sleep ...

Do find the source of the cause ...

Sleep deprivation, like you mentioned, can make you very ill, mentally and physically. I'm pretty sure there I have a dua in my holy book of remedies for insomnia ...

But I just cant remember where I placed that book I'll try looking for it brother and posting the dua for you.

I believe I have a dua saved on my desktop at work ...

It was given to me by a friend when I had the same problem.

Close your eyes. Have a friend punch you Rea hard, so your knocked out!

And you'll automatically be sleeping.

Watch 2001: A Space Odyssey and you'll be gone in 10 minutes!

If still your unable to, get one of those Knock out Sleep potion things.

You know the ones people put in a handkerchief and kidnap people with??

Oh ok, longer than i expected.

Hhhmmm interesting.

I see what you mean about normal stresses and strains which the lack of sleep isnt helping with.

Your mind is clearly too active and you need to find some way of switching off.

I know this might sound abit stupid..

But can you not just try to make yourself switch off?

Like just try to block everything out- anything that doesnt need to be dealt with- just try not to think about. Sister carols advice seems really good mashaAllah. The sleeping duaa's that i know are the normal 2 that i read Let me see if i can find them for you inshaAllah. "Allahumma bismika amuutu wa ahyaa". O Allah (SWT)!

With your name I die and I live.

For your thoughts.

If I'm truly honest there is something that is probably causing this, but I'm not prepared to discuss that here. If you could post that dua I would really appreciate it masha'Allah.

Are you finding that you're unable to sleep for more than short periods at all or are you finding that you become drowsy/sleepy at odd times, then force yourself to stay awake to get through work/college and can't get to sleep at night afterwards?

Normally I'd presume you have this problem because something has stressed you out and that's affecting your ability to sleep but your replies give the impression that that's not the issue.

Here are some ideas that spring to mind: - When you're approaching bedtime, if there is anything on your mind that needs to get done the next day, leave a notepad and pen by your bed and write down the list of things to do so that you don't stay up worrying about whether you'll forget to do them or not and that can relieve tension - Don't eat cheese in the evenings - Within half an hour of bedtime, do not watch tv, make phone calls, play video games, go online or read any emotionally charged literature that can make you excited or upset.

Instead try some meditation/relaxation or breathing exercises to help ease you into a more relaxed mode and if you can't sleep after half an hour then try them again. - Try to nap during the day;

Even if you can't sleep just put your head down in a darkened room for half an hour to see if it relaxes you and play something relaxing in the background like light nasheeds (nothing with fast beats or emotionally charged lyrics, just simple easy listening type stuff) - Learn to do meditation and/or relaxation or breathing exercises twice a day;

Once about half an hour before bedtime and once during your nap.

Simply lying down doesn't make you relaxed, you need to learn to breathe properly and relax your body first as this will help remove the muscle tension you get from staying awake even if it doesn't result in sleep - If you have wifi in the house, then switch it off at night.

I could be completely wrong but some people have electromagnetic sensitivity and find that such devices can make them ill so for all we know this could be a symptom of something like that Last of all, there are times when it's probably counterproductive to try and sleep.

Sometimes if you lie awake for over an hour doing nothing wondering why you can't get to sleep especially if you have to wake early the next day then it can get to you and you've tried everything but are still wide awake.

At such times, it's sometimes better to just stay up and do something that you'd normally do during the day such as some light reading or homework depending on how alert you feel cos' trying to MAKE yourself sleep can also be quite stressful and annoying. If none of these things work, then I think you should consider going to the GP for some sleeping pills but just try them temporarily to see if they can help you set a routine.

Ah yes, if you find after taking pills that you can't make any headway to sleep normally without them- THEN I'd strongly suggest that you ask your GP to refer you to a sleep clinic for a proper diagnosis and hopefully treatment as well.

Ya, I can understand, just as long as you know the cause, so you can work on it I found the book ...

It says To Cure Insomnia ... To enable a patient to get a good sleep, Surah Mujaadalah (Juz 28) should be recited next to the patient. I'm sure you can download it online ...

And you can keep playing it on your computer till you fall asleep I have another dua at work ...

Having thought about it more, I can't remember if the dua was for insomnia or bad dreams ...

I'll have a look tomorrow, InshaAllah. Hope you get better soon brother, just remember, some things that have happened in the past cannot be changed and whats written for us in the future is at the will of Allah swt ...try not worrying too much.

Easier said than done, I know. May Allah swt grant you patience, strength, protection and guidance!

Buy some lavender essential oil and scatter sum on your pillow before you go get in bed.

Really knocked me out first time i tried it!

Plus its gota nice scent to it

Some nights I don't sleep at all and most nights no more than 3 hours. i've been having the same problem too and the lack of sleep makes me feel like i have zero concentration but the thing is try not to worry about it, think 'yeah 3 hours is enough to sleep' - think positive that way when you feel a migraine coming on (do you get migraines?) or feel annoyed think ' i shall rectify this by doing something positive' Please brother, try not to think negative about it cuz that will make you feel worse as if something might be wrong with you and you will be feeling down a lot afterwards.

It happened to me and i just felt like this 'don't care' attitude to very important things in my life, i started to spend time in my own company and neglect friends but it made me feel worse overall. Try to stay positive

Read ayat al kursi before you sleep and some other verses, whatever you know just read it.

It will help you.
