plan retention anyone? - Ubuntu Forums

I can't believe its been two years already.

I actually started using ubuntu less than 2 years ago.

When you don't have broadband, you remember the first live disk iso you download.

For me it was gutsy gibbon.

It wasn't actually painless but it weaned me from borrowing software (ahem, ahem) to being an advocate for foss!

Now that i have gotten that off my chest let me explain the topic title. my cellphone plan subscription has lapsed and i have availed myself of a free phone to renew it.

My friends say i'm actually paying more for the phone in the long run.

But i don't see it that way.

I now go online with gprs using my g502.

It worked just like my previous k610i.

Its not great, but it just works. of course i wish it was better.

I wish i was connecting at 3g speeds or better yet hsdpa.

But i cant get that yet in my area.

Purely 2g signal for both globe and smart.

Wala nga sun. so for better or for worse, i'm sticking with smart.

Funny part about it is that my wife and i are on different carriers.

Hedging our bets that we will get a 3g signal.

We actually live within half a kilometer from a 3g cellsite of globe, but we can't seem to get a signal.

I remember in the bad old days when my nokia 6150 had a jack in its rear for me to plug an external antenna for cases like this.

But as phones evolved.

This feature got dropped.. the way i understand it gsm is not very well suited for cases like mine.

(in a rural setting) the school my wife works for across the street has satellite internet but as a simple user i can't afford such a setup. so let me end this little rambling rant to a close.

Molon labe!

I don't own a cellphone plan myself - I use prepaid for my personal use.

I find it cheaper and much more comfortable knowing what I'm spending.

The company provides me a post-paid phone but I just use it for work. Although i do have an HSDPA modem from PLDT but that is pretty much unlimited use so I also know how much I'm supposed to pay at the end of the month.

Hi tagabukid and jsgotangco , although I am not in Philippine, I would like to share with you my experience: The last 14 months I am using +mobile -broadband (it is more mobile than broadband) as my ONLY internet connection for business and personal use. I live in Athens Greece, with a population of 3-4 million.

We all have at least one GSM phone, 3 major 3G/HSPA providers and a very good network (up to 7.2Mbits/s 4-5 bars signal). The actual speed differs within the day from 50 to 1500 KBits/s.

An average "good condition" gives you a download rate of 30-50KBytes/s (any site) reaching the 200-250KBytes/s downloading only from the provider's mirror.

Cost is around 30EURO (35USD) per month for a 5GB data traffic.

To be within 5GB I do not download Video, Mp3 (neither using streaming Radio, etc). The above status is today!

One year before the rate was compared with PSTN or at better with an ISDN line!

Networks are always "upgrated".

Do not forget to call technical support of your provider and polite state your problem!

Especially when you are paying extra money for the data service.

Possibly they could raise thee data to voice ratio, or check the signal to your area.

Note also that most times (at home 100%) I am using an USB extension cable to move the 3G modem closer (or out) of my window!

Better signal, less radiation. Regards, George P.S.

Very impressive to see "ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ" to your signature! mol o n lav e in ancient Greek means "Come and get it!

(if you dare)" The accent in the second word is on the last character (e) as I bold it above.

Ancients are using only capital letters (without accents) so some historians are confused with the similar later word l a ve. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...m_monument.jpg

This is interesting.

Apparently, Internet is cheaper here in the Philippines.

For the same average (40-60 KB/s) download speed, I only get to pay ₱999 (around 20USD) monthly;

But there's no data traffic limit that I'm aware of.

Just these last couple of weeks, I would say that I've upped and downed some 15GB of data (don't ask my what kind or how I know because I'm not going to tell you (LOL)). Anyway, thanks for visiting our community, George.
