Losing Weight, I'm on a diet and need encouragement. - Wizards Community
Diet: Body for Life (6 meals a day, smaller portions, one day a week I eat what I want), favoring proteins heavily.
Exercise program: Wii Fit.
(Got fat like a gamer, get thin like a gamer) 45 minutes a day of mixing strength exercises, Yoga, and Aerobics.
UPDATED: From 30 to 45 minutes, and updated diet.
First day of dieting: Mid December
First day I started Wii Fit for 30+ minutes a day: Feb 14
First day I had Weight measured: January 31
Starting Weight(1/31): 263.5
Current Weight(4/25): 243.8
I had been doing the diet since mid December and some minor exercising, but now I have decided to go the full deal.
I have no idea how much I weighed before starting the diet in Mid December, but since I started the exercising in Wii fit and measuring as of this first post I am down 8 pounds (I should note that's during a dip since weight can go up or down 2 pounds or so)
Since another forum member, Idolis, decided to share his attempt at self improvement (in his case quitting smoking) I decided I would look for encouragement from you guys as well.
Eventually I realize I will have to switch to a more extensive exercise program to get into true GOOD shape, but for now I wish to really get myself out of real bad health into DECENT health.
Goal: 210 or under by July 17th 2009.
(When I plan to attend Otakon)

I used to be the stereortypical "token fat kid".
Now I'm one of the healthiest in my place of work (thanks to exercise).
Glad to see you're doing some physical stuff aswell as eating less.
Exercise is much better for thining you down than any diet.
If possbile, try walking places that you'd normal travel to by car/bus (trust me, this makes a BIG difference).
I'm not familiar with you're diet.
6 meals a day sounds a lot, but if it involves eating less than normal, then it's an improvement.
As a biologist, I'd advise you to keep clear of anything like the Atkins diet: if you're on it short term, then you'll put weight back on when you finish, long term can screw up you're health.
Good luck mate.

Keep up the excercise man!
Trust me it's well worth the results.
You'll feel much better about yourself, look better, and have more energy.
It can actually make you a better gamer too!
Reason being is that being in top physical condition gives you better endurance for gaming.
It quickens the reflexes too and given the confidence boost that will come with looking better you'll be more confident while you game which usually helps your performance.
I am on a similar meal plan that you are on (mine's a 4 meal plan).
I just want to lose a little weight.
*around ten pounds is my goal, and more muscle definition.
I'm already near the ideal weight for my height*
But keep going!

WAY TO GO STEALTHMARMOT!!!!
Congratulations!!!!
I am not familiar with that diet program, but usually the most important thing is reduction of overall calorie intake.
It is really all about portions, just be smart with them and don't overeat, then exercise!
Exercise!! exercise!!!
I train for health and running, but there is a guy at the gym that I find really inspirational for those losing weight.
He has lost about a hundred pounds in the last year.
I was congratulating him on it a few weeks ago and he told me that he really just followed a couple of tips on his diet to do it.
2 glasses of water 15 minutes before every meal
Proper portions on the plate, puts food / spoon / fork down after taking each bite to slow the meal down.
Eats when he is hungry not at any scheduled meal time.
As far as exercise goes, Wii fit is a good start.
Do little things differently too, stairs not elevator, don't always search for the closest parking spot.
I think gym memberships are very important to health.
There is good camaraderie you make other friends with a healthy lifestyle in mind and all the equipment you need is available.
But, anyway, if you are looking for inspiration...
Go Stealthmarmot go!
Drink That WATER!!!
Cut that FAT!!!
Deflate your weight!!!
Then you'll be dancin!!!!

Good for you. Respect.
Too many gamers and pop culture junkies subsist on being glued to a chair video/RPG gaming, watching sci-fi, and eating...a lot.
What I can recommend for what it's worth:
-No food 1 hr before bed at all .
It doesn't process correctly and adds weight.
-Watch your favorite shows and all, but do it from a stair master, bike, whatever.
Any media to break up the monotony of exercise.
When I was in conditioning, I would just pick an LP from my stax and exercise till it was done, lift weights while watching PBS or a movie, whatever.
-Water, lots of it.
No more soda, etc.
Drop sugar from your coffee for something else and none in tea, use honey instead.
Crystal light is good too.
-Clear out all the crap food of the house.
Like drugs/alcohol, if it's in your envirionment, you want it moreso by association.
Or, just don't buy them.
The money you save you can treat yourself to other things;
More gaming stuff, movies, etc.
-Swim.
Cannot recommend this enough.
Very good for shedding weight and one of the most efficient exercises you can do (resistance is all around you).
-Walk everywhere, bike w/ your iPod/zune/etc., stay busy, etc.
The more sedentary you are, the more you'll want your vice.

Here's some reverse psychology:
Stop that exercising and healthy eating right now!
If you're in shape, you'll be able to walk to the store instead of taking the car, and think of all the people and fresh air you'll be exposed to!
Pretty soon, the fat will be melting off, hot women will be hanging on your arms, you'll get a better job, and move out of your parents' basement.
Don't do it!

Well an update, my "bottom weight" is a bit lower than I thought.
I just weighed myself this morning before doing anything else (I always weigh myself that way) and my weight was 254.4, down 1.1 pounds from yesterday, so thats a total 9.1 pounds lost.
Of course I expect after today that will be back up again since today is my free day.
For those of you not familiar with the diet I am on, Body for Life, the diet actually says you HAVE to take a day off every week and not exercise and eat what you want as part of it's regiment.
Reason being 2 fold: 1.
It KEEPS you on the diet, When you get one of those cravings you loathe so much and you hate the fact you cant eat it for a long time its discouraging, but if you only have to wait 6 days to get a piece of pie or a pizza you can do that.
Its sort of regulated cheating so you dont ACTUALLY cheat.
2.
It helps keep your metabolism up.
If you reduce your caloric intake, eventually your body compensates and lowers your metabolism, however by increasing your caloric intake every week, you keep your body thinking you aren't starving.
(point of note, thats the reason you eat the 3 snacks a day on the regular diet, cutting that much from your 3 meals.
It keeps your metabolism up since you are digesting all day instead of 3 times a day.)
So today I get to eat like a pig without falling off the wagon
Tomorrow though, back on the low fat low sugar high protien high fiber way of life.

Good job on trying to lose the weight.
I did the Body-for-Life program several years ago with fantastic results.
The only problem I had was eating all those meals.
I highly recommend you try the meal replacement shakes to offset all that food.
To bad I started playing WoW and gained 75 pounds.
Maybe I should start the program again myself.

Woo! Nice! It sounds like you are doing well.
I've always had to work for a living (construction, farm work -hoeing beets and such, not driving tractors- landscaping and whatnot) but I have a friend that used to weigh nearly two hundred pounds and she wasn't much over five feet.
When she finally got serious about her diet we found out the best thing to do was make her food fun.
Get some of your friends in on your diet.
Have them go with you to heath stores to munch your leafy greens and simple proteins with you.
That way for you it's more fun and seems like less of a chore.
It got to where we stopped going to pizza parlors and burger joints altogether.
We made even more friends that we'd never have met as well.
So it was a win all in all.
Keep in good spirits and be well!

Hit my first snag.
Right shoulder is hurting, and not like its worn out, I might have pulled it.
Haven't let it stop me, but its been a few days and the pain is still there.
Only thing I can do is stay off it.
Still did my exercises today, just made sure to avoid ones that used that muscle.
Sadly this meant no Wii fit boxing, which is probably my favorite exercise.
Its probably the one I threw my shoulder out doing.
Learned the hard way about proper stretching of your shoulders.
Hopefully by tomorrow I'll be able to use it, if not the next day.
Will be weighing myself when I get up in the morning.
If you are confused when looking at the posting time, I work the night shift at my job.
I wake up at 2:30 PM and I go to sleep around 6 AM.
I get normal amounts of sleep (between 7 and 9 hours depending on the day).

Firstly, hail fellow graveyarder!
Nightfolk are de kewlest!
Secondly, it definitely sucks that you hurt yourself, but it's awesome that you don't let it slow you down.
Do you like RPG's?
If so, grab Dragon Quest: Swords.
That game only requires one arm, your sword arm, and you'll still get some exercise.
They will ask you which hand you use, so you can use your left and still have your aim dead on.
Then you can restart your boxing career after a little downtime.
Just beware of ring rust!
Good night and good luck!

Stay away from soda.
Don't ever drink it.
Also, start doing push ups and pull ups.
If you can't do many, start small and slowly give yourself goals of doing more.
Work at your own pace and stay dedicated.
Working out with friends helps with staying dedicated, but it usually means you don't get as an intense workout.
Also, if you can, run (as in sprinting) or swim.
Good Luck! Make sure you gives us updates of a healthier you
Oh in fact, drink nothing but water.

Wow, Stealth. Very cool.
I'm glad you decided to look for encouragement from fellow gamers and that my thread inspired you to do so.
I really don't have anything to add to the advice you have already recieved.
I just wanted you to know that I appreciated your posts on my thread and offer you the same kind of encouragement.
Keep going and may the fat slide of you like water on a duck's back.

This isn't a snag!
This is P-R-O-G-R-E-S-S!!
Go Stealmarmot GO!
No pain, no gain!
Pain is weakness leaving the body!
Don't overdue it, don't make the injury worse, but rejoice in your progress!
Keep potassium levels up bananas are good for that, but don't eat too many because they are kind of heavy as fruits go.
That will help with muscular issues.
Limit the movement in your shoulder.
This is especially important when you are sleeping, I would suggest a sling if you can manage it to keep the shoulder immobile.
Congratulations StealthMarmot!!!!
GO GO GO!!!!

Well I'm right handed and that's the shoulder I threw out.
Anyway I don't have that kind of money to throw around really.
As for learning boxing and that sort of thing, the problem is you have to realize that as a night shift person I cant go places during the weekdays, so any exercise I get would be from my own home.
Hence why the Wii Fit was perfect.

Many gyms open early and trainers will meet at almost anytime, and they have classes at odd times too.
My gym opens early and I have been working out on the floor with mine at 5am.
I think some in the area have gone to 24 hours a day.
But the Wii fit is certainly a good start!!!

Way to go man!
Exercise is what really works out everything more than just a diet!
If you keep up the exercise ine every way, you boost your metabolism, feel better and burn off what you consume faster.
Diets are nice, but just doing those alone is rough.
You get cravings all the time and seldom see results as fast as you actually want.
If you know any trainers or can afford a gym, I suggest that route.
Even a few minutes on a tread-mill or some easy weights can help with results fast!
that and my trick was switching to diet sodas....then cutting them out all together!

Huh you don't know?
I'm ALL man!
Well....
At least 90% or so.
At any rate, I missed out on exercise yesterday, but today Ill be sure to try at least to get a half a days worth (going to exercise the areas I'm not aching horribly)
On the plus side I have finished all the exercises in Wii Fit at least once, and I remember from experience in strength exercising that it only aches the first couple of times you do it, then if you do it regularly there is no aching unless you actually overstrain yourself.
