Blindmans Blues Forum -> Musicals
Yes, I will admit it.
I was given the Musical loving gene by my mother.
I especially enjoy Evita, Sweeney Todd, Oliver, Little Shop Of Horrors, Five Guys Named Moe, Les Miserables, and (obviously the new musical version of) Hairspray.
Have we any other fans of musicals here?

It's ironic to me that you started this thread mississippijohnhurt1928 - because at one of the colleges where I teach guitar I have been asked to play guitar and direct the band for Little Shop Of Horrors this spring.
I've only been involved in playing two other musicals in 30 years so this project seems complicated and very difficult to me...all the cues, segues, tacets, vamps, etc..
Generally the songs seem fairly straightforward - but there's always a strange 'twist' in the chord changes, codas, etc.
Somewhere in the song.
The handwritten score is hard for me to follow....I think I'm going to have to sketch out each tune my own way I like to do charts.
This project should be interesting and hopefully fun.
The music seems good even though generally musicals are not my kind of thing.
I feel like a fish out of water in this theatrical element.

Well after almost 20 years (saw it when I was 13) every time someone mentions musicals I can't seem to get the songs from CATS out of my head.
Wish the school'd taken us to see pahntom of the opera now.

I like some, but lean toward certain "classics" such as "South Pacific." Saw Richard Kiley do "Man of LaMancha" when the show went on tour after Broadway back in the '60s and it was great.
My daughter, however, seems to have the bug.
She just made her second trip down to NYC from Ithaca, this time for the musical version of "Young Frankenstein." She was 6th row the first night, then won a ticket lottery the next evening and got a front-center seat for $25, so she went again.

I've never cared for musicals although I've certainly suffered through my share.
(what a guy won't do to convince a girl that he's a worthy prospect.
;) ) The one exception is "Springtime For Hitler" from The Producers.
Fall on the floor funny!

As a kid I hated them.
As a middle aged geezer I love em'.
But not just any old musical.
It has to have an "edge." '
"Guys & Dolls"
"Paint Your Wagon"
"Rocky Horror Picture Show"
And for those who may have forgotten or think it just ain't cool,
"Help"
"Hard Days Night"
"Tommy" (despite Elton John's hideous rendition of "Pinball Wizard")

Although not a Broadway Musical, as a kid I always looked forward to seeing NBC's yearly showing of the musical film "The Wizard Of OZ"!
Hey, I just couldn't get enough of them flying monkeys!!!
:D "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead...."
Johnny Roy
PS-- angmack, perhaps you can give me some tips on directing the band for Little Shop Of Horrors this Spring.
I think I'm in over my head!

I never saw an actual live musical, but I do like some of the movies.
Rocky Horror, Little Shop of Horror are among my faves, but I also have a soft spot for the Fred Astaire/Gene Kelly sort of things.
