Back Pain Forum - Scoliosis?
I aperently have minor scoliosis, doctor told me its nothing to worry about.
But I know its worst then what he says...
My spin pops out of my back, you could see it through my shirt.
Its embarrassing!
Ive had it all my life.
I cant sit straight without having back pains, even if I stand in one place for a long time it hurts.
Maybe this is because I spend alot of time on the computer not sitting straight.
Do people with minor scoliosis have their spin sticking out?
And what can I do about it?

Hello!
I have minor scoliosis too...
I've read a lot online about it, & still trying to learn more...
It's the right-left curve..
Apparently there are exercises one can do to improve spine health...
My doctor just recommended me yoga & general core-streangthening exercises...
I found online that specific exercises for scoliosis exist - at www.ctds.info the author recommends several books, one of them is about yoga for scoliosis (which exercises to do etc.) & at www.scoliosis.org forum exercises developed by Katharina Schroth & her successors were recommended (originally from Germany, there's a clinic in Spain & several other countries, & now in UK, & some people do it in USA too, I think...)
The authoress of the ctds site is wondering if it might be related to vitamin/mineral deficiencies required for strong bones too - like Magnesium etc.
Anyway, that's what I've read about so far...
Will be happy if anyone knows more, or reports improvements from exercises &/or food!

| rollar64 replied on April 26th, 2008 Experienced User It seems that just about everyone with scoliosis has back pain but the offical line is that it is harmless i have seen forums with hundreds of peole with scoliois who are all in pain.
I think one of the reasons they say this is because they cant really do anything about it.
If you can see it then it must be pretty bad 1nsomni4, chiropracters are supposed to be able to treat this but i would be wary.

| algosdoc replied on April 26th, 2008 Experienced User Most scoliosis occurs in the thoracic spine and consists of a S-shaped bicurvature.
Unless one of the curves is worse than 45 degrees or more, surgery is not indicated since it does not help with the pain.
Although many doctors completely discount the production of pain via this abnormality, there is indeed excessive stresses on the joints and discs on one side due to compression and on the other due to distraction.
Both can produce pain.
Sometimes back bracing can help.
With respect to the computer: make sure your screen is exactly at eye level, do not recline in a chair when using the computer, and consider using a dragon program for speech recognition to avoid stresses on the shoulders due to keyboarding.

My back problem isn't severe but its affected my sternum which is a bit freaky, it eats away at me at work as i can't get through the day with one side of my body bigger than the other and my doctor says its "common".
The only way off it is i mask it myself cleverly as my doctor has been nothing more comparable than utterly useless.
There is surgery to correct my chest but not on the NHS and im no millionaire !!
All i want is to be normal !!
Is there any others out there if so i feel for you as its the most ignored problem around society !!

| LaylaS. replied on July 7th, 2008 New User Yeah, I think it's a big problem - getting worse with improper nutrition & the growing computer use!!!!
Do make sure you get enough Calcium!!
(& Magnesium!)
The www.Ctds.info site says ostheopenia/ostheoporosis often correlate with scolio, so I went & got myself checked - yup!!
My bone density is worse than my Moms!!
(still 'nothing to worry about' - but heavy intake of Ca was recommended to me by Mom's gynae who did the scan!!
My doctor still saw 'nothing to worry about' & said she usually doesn't have people check their bone density before 50 as 'it's not reliable' - what?!)
Another excellent website I found: http://www.drbookspan.com
She has a lot of free articles that helped FINALLY reduce my back pain!!
Http://www.drbookspan.com/clinical.html (I found out which back exercises & what posture were making my condition worse!!
- I also have hyperlordosis so that was the problem!!
'duh'!!)
Still worrying about my scolio, although the orthopedist told me 'it's nothing to worry about' too (it's 8-10 degrees max) - but with my right shoulder lower than right & a bone at my chest protruding a bit, how do I 'not worry'?!!
Lol (& who's gonna wanna marry me?
Lol)
I'm having Physical Therapy in August, for scolio-correction exercises & 'proper back exercises' (Hopefully!!) Still wondering whether to order the Amazon books or not...
The orthopedist also said: soft bed (!) - he recommended water bed, but I'm not sure about that..
& sitting on either an inflatable ball or a special 'Spinalis' office chair...
I do find that both a softer bed (again) & sitting on the ball, & adjusting (raising) the monitor & computer mouse have helped A LOT!!
I did have to go to the orthopedist & pay for it myself, my Doc said it would be useless!!
But it wasn't lol - the advice for the inflatable ball & the bed was well worth the money already!!
He's the top orthopedist here locally & they do take more notice of you if you pay yourself!
& if you ask & say you're willing to do exercises & do what it takes etc.
/Though the orthopedist also said not to worry lol - for them anything less than 35 degrees curve or -2.2 ostheopenia is 'nothing to worry about' - which only means they really can't operate or give you medicines or anything.../
He did tell me to EXERCISE!!
A lot!! & do the special exercises regularly when I learn them...
(I admit I was pretty much anti-sports most of my life...
With occasional walks & running/jogging later on...)
running was advised against (not sure if because of the scolio or a few bad discs) & 'walking' was said to be 'too little'...
He said either cycling or nordic walking or such...
More 'intense' sports...
(he even suggested things like tennis but that just looks too dangerous for me!!
OoO)
he okayed rollerblading & skating (which I love!) - except for falling, lol So I'm thinking if I take it easy it might be okay...

| chinkbot6000 replied on July 14th, 2008 New User i think i have scoliosis hi i have been experiencing pain in my sciatic nerve this week and i think it might have been just because i slept wrong.
This prompted me to find some help because i believe i have scoliosis .
i don't have the s curvature in the spine my spine is straight mostly.
I walk with a hunch and i think one of my vertebrae is getting bigger than the others.
Its the one where my head bends and is right around shoulder height.
I did this walk in test and they said 10 lbs more weight i put on one foot.
i have tried to talk to doctors and they all tell me stand up straight.
Well i don't want to sound weak but i have 10 million other things on my mind at all times.
And when i stand up straight i sometimes over extend and it hurts my neck.
when i throw my head back fast or slow i can feel my spine stabbing my nerve or whatever and i think "ok i didn't die this time" it is as hocking pain and feels electrical kinda.
I was able to put my head back much further when i was younger.
im so sick of having this hunch issue.
Im young and i want to be more active.
I'm scared if i fall off something and land on my back my spine will stab my nerve and leave me paralyzed.
I was told i have 2 locked disks i think on either side of this vertebrae.
if i poke at the area i can hear it click and i can kinda move it back and forth a little.
A lot of times i stretch my head back with my shoulders and hear small/loud cracking in the area 2 or 3 times.
do you guys have any suggestions for fixing this?
I cant stand living with this (literally) and i seriously look like a person standing up straight, it hurts too much, i lack the focus, and results seem to never come just pain.
thnaks a lot

| rollar64 replied on July 14th, 2008 Experienced User If you are hunched over you probably have kyphosis which is an abnormal curve of the spine in the upper body region from font to back not to the side like scoliosis chiropractors and osteopaths are trained to treat these problems but if you try one make sure they are good.
Have you had an MRI or x rays if so what were the results you might also consult an orthopedic surgeon not that you necessarily need surgery but they can order tests and rule certain things in or out like ruptured disks.
good luck Did you find this post useful?
| LaylaS. replied on July 18th, 2008 New User Try to Google & see pictures & read up on your condition/s, & kyphosis & (hyper-)lordosis, & see which pics come closest to how you look..
(I have both a bit of scolio which is left-right curvature & hyper-lordosis of the back & neck, my neck is 'hunched to the front too much' too, & one of my vertebrae 'sticks out' too...
Dr Bookspan describes hyper-lordosis & gives pictures of it on her site too!!
& gives great tips!!)
Do you have a 'Forward head'?
Make sure your computer etc are in a 'best position' (again, there are tips on the site I mention!) It really does make a difference!!
I second getting Xrays or MRI, & expert opinion (best in writing, to google it later), my doc didn't want me to get them at first, but if the pain persists, they will have you tested.
They are trained to just nod it off at first, because many people really just need rest & core-strengthening exercises...
& if the pain persists you just have to bug your doctor, &/or go see a good specialist yourself.
Be careful with the movements, you want to improve (& not accidentally worsen), right?
Maybe you do need to rest a bit & do core strengthening exercises when you're better.
Maybe you need a Physical Therapy specialist to show you the right exercises for you..
Or a book or a few with good exercises...
(or at least a piece of paper with exercises..)
Please don't wait a year like I did, go & get information & get empowered & start doing the right posture and/or exercises for you as soon as possible!!

| LaylaS. replied on July 19th, 2008 New User Michael, so glad this is helping you!!
YAY!!
The whole site is very inspiring.
Please read all the articles there, because there's really A LOT of helpful info in all of them!!!!
/Even the ones about knees and lower back!!
Prevention is the KEY!!/
I printed them all out & underlined the key principles, & reread them a couple of times...
(& still intend to!!
) Yes, even the Success Stories!!
(very inspiring!!)
She also has a blog & it has some good posts too, & you can ask questions there...
Though some links there seem to be broken..
But do take your time - & make sure you are not too much in front of the computer, that's bad for the neck & back too!
Ideally, one would walk about & stretch a bit every 30 minutes or so...
What also helps me (to avoid back pain or such) are daily walks...
When I had pain, I could only walk a very small distance and only on very straight asphalt, no hills or bumps..
& only in certain shoes..
Surprisingly, NOT the Adidas!
(try to see which ones work best, for me, a 'straight' sole, not too cushioned or too high, but not too thin either, worked best)..
& then I could increase the distance..
& later on go uphill easily..
So I really recommend you to go for a walk every day!!
Go just to the nearest corner if you can't go for more, but do go every day!!
Both my Mom & Dad cured their backs with exercises & daily walks!!
And a friend told me her husband has had bad pains in his back for years, & the back was only better when he did exercises..
If he didn't do them, he couldn't even lift their kid..
Now my Dad had terrible back pain too, in the past, but now he is stronger than I am!!
(at 60!!) hikes mountains & works in the field etc., lifts heavy things...
But he does squats & core-strengthening exercises EVERY day!!
& goes for a walk every day too...
His problems were a bit different than mine so he does a bit different exercises, but the main thing is strengthening the core muscles!
If your muscles are strong, your back will be better protected even in case you fell or such...
I hope this will INSPIRE you!!
Yes, you can lead a happy & successful & strong life...
But it's gonna have to be an ACTIVE life...
Dad also changed his nutrition quite a lot, & Dr Bookspan recommends healthy nutrition too..
Avoid food additives, too processed food or 'soda drinks' and possibly sugar & white flour...
I am not sure what locked discs are - can you give a link to a picture or an explanation?
Do you mean 'fused' discs or...
(?)
/I am not a native speaker of English so I don't understand everything the first time..
/
Please keep us updated how your back is!!
It's very inspiring to hear from people improving their health!

| utangel81 replied on January 11th, 2009 New User Scoliosis with Harrington Rods My doctors discovered my scoliosis at the age of 17.
At that point I had a 45-50 degree curvature in my thoracic spine.
I had no idea because I had never experienced any pain or problems related to the curve.
Unfortunately my curve was already too advanced to be treated with a brace or exercises.
The brace only works if you haven't gone through your growth spurt yet.
Surgery was the only option.
My orthopedist (one of the best in the country) explained to me that once the curvature reaches 45 degrees, it is sort of a "point of no return." She explained that it would continue to curve at least 1 degree each year.
Since the ribs curve with the spine, my scoliosis would have eventually killed me in my early forties by crushing my vital organs.
Now others may have a minor curvature that never progresses.
If you can catch it young, a brace may stop the curvature.
For others, exercises may be the answer.
Either way though, you need to keep monitoring your curve to make sure that it is not continuing to curve.
The surgery is one of the most painful surgeries that you can have so if you can prevent that, then I would definitely recommend it.

| moh08 replied on January 28th, 2009 New User Kyphoscoliosis Im also 17 and i recived a call from the medical centre today saying that i have got this condition.
But the thing is my GPS on holiday and im waiting for his call which is in 2 weeks.
I wanna know what the Xray shows and how much my spine is curved in degrees.
Im so annoyed because the Xray took so long to be sent to my gp (about 4 weeks) and now i have to wait another 2 weeks for the answer.
The NHS is so unorganised...
Also i play alot of sport and love going to the gym to do weightlifting.
Im in good shape and my fitness is good.
However i have been experiencing painfull upper backpain.
Whenever i straighten my back and move my arms behind me a certain point on my back cracks.
I so hope this condition dosnt worsen as i want to carry on with the sports and weightlifting.
