Points for PR - finance/corporate lawyer from India - finance courses in Australia - StudyConnect.com Forum
Hi,
I am a project finance/corporate finance lawyer from India.
I'm interested in applying for a finance courses in Australia.
I understand that being a Solicitor in Australia would get me 60 points for the points test for PR.
However, to be registered as a solicitor i would have to under go a clerkship or take up a practical training course for about 12 months.
That is something I cannot afford to do.
I am interested in MBA(Finance), Master of Applied Finance and M.Com (Applied Finance) & Master of Business (Finance) courses and i see myself working with PE firms and Investment Banking concerns.Would anybody happen to know if any of the courses that I've mentioned above would enable me to to be assessed as a finance manager?
Finance manager gets 60 points however, I do not know what are the exact degrees that they are looking for to be assessed as a Finance Manager.
Please let me know about this.
Thanks

As a project finance / corporate finance lawyer, I would've thought you'd be able to afford 12 months of clerkship or PLT.
Which is stranger still, because doing a masters degree would probably cost you a lot more money anyway...
You'd rather do that instead?

Sorry for the ambiguity.
Something I cannot afford to do meant not on monetary terms but in terms of career enhancement.
While I might monetarily be able to afford doing a Clerkship or a Practical Training Course, it would in no way benefit me apart from getting points for a PR.
If i were to start at a law firm in Australia, I would start at the bottom most position.
In fact, assuming even if i were to return to my home country, for whatever reason, the clerkship or the practical training or the fact that I'm a solicitor in Australia would be meaningless.
Whereas, I'm hoping that being a Project Finance lawyer, with a qualification in Applied Finance, I might be able to join at a senior position in PE firms Invest banking firms and the qualification might mean something even if I were to return to my home country.
What I'm interested in knowing is whether the courses that I'd mentioned would be sufficient for the purpose of being assessed as a Finance Manager?
Thanks.

The Clerkship for solicitors is not an Immigration requirement its a Professional Requirement to get a practicing certificate.
Immigration wont give you a visa unless you are licensed to practice in Australia.
You wont lose your seniority as a solicitor just because of this.
From what you describe I think its unlikely that you would get a skills assessment as a Finance Manager, your background (limited as you describe it here) doesn't cover the required duties.
The Masters couses you describe would enable you to qualify for the skills assessment, but I dont think your work history supports it and you'll probably need some work experience points in that field to get PR.
Investment Banking jobs are not in large demand in the current market and probably unlikely to pick up substantially over your period of study.

Does that means that even an MBA (Finance) Degree would be insufficient for the purposes of being assessed as a Finance Manager?
I do not understand what qualifications exactly being assessed as a Finance Manager take.
Is the degree irrelevant and experience accounted for more or is it the other way around or are both weighed equally?
