Making Every Game an Event: Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation - HCRealms

From their intruduction in Mutations and Monsters, Event Dials have been a controvertial and often unpopular addition to the game.

They can be voted out of tournament games.

They often require specific builds.

They are viewed as 'dud' pulls in sealed games.

They have no value as duplicates (Time Bomb aside).

They give even MORE rules to keep track of during a game. But especially now, in the interim between owners when tournaments are more open to interpretation than ever, event dials can provide fun alternatives to ordinary gameplay, and can make a lot of unviable strategies and figures a little more conceivable. In these articles, I will take 1 Event Dial, explain the key elements of the dial, address how accurately it reflects the scenario its named for, and look at figures or teams that might work well with it. Today, we'll check in with an event dial that was a concept already used by many creative judges during the hayday of 'create your own tournament' play: Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation . Previous Articles: Planet Hulk Civil War Evolutionary War

For a brief synopsis of the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation, click here. The Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation (which, from here on out, will be UCWF, so I don't have to write as much) is, basically, a wrestling circuit for all the stereotypical bricks in the Marvel Universe.

As such, the event dial goes all out in creating the entertainment wrestling feel, complete with a ring, malleable restrictions, and outside interference.

Alternatively, if you're not a wrestling fan, it can reflect those "Wolverine vs.

Sabretooth" moments, where two teams clash, but the focus is on an archenemies' pairing that no one dare interfere with. Here's a first look at the dial: Quote: Before objects are placed on the map, place four SPECIAL markers on the map so that they mark the outside corners of a 6-square by 6-square area containing as much clear terrain as possible as close to the center of the map as possible;

This area is the Ring.

Objects can't be placed in the Ring.

To play UCWF, you'll need a way of marking a ring.

4 Special markers will do just fine, but if you've got a little time and a bit of creativity, making your own 'ring' is a lot more fun, and adds a lot to the scenario.

A simple cutout from an old map, or a quick Photoshop job, will get you a lot of satisfaction, and I've even seen people make wooden frames to show the ring's edge.

Make sure to keep in mind that, if you have a printout overlaying the map, you somehow have to denote the terrain underneath;

It doesn't simply go away. The 'as much clear terrain as possible' portion is a little bizarre to determine;

Unless the other player complains, or the map is terribly hindered in just the middle, simply stick it in the middle and call it a day.

Interesting side note, I have no idea how this would interact with the Doom's Yard map.

I'd simply avoid using that one with this. Oh, and don't place any objects in there.

Also, because Wrestlers treat the outside of the ring as walls, any Special Objects won't add effects to the ring.

Nice thought, though. Quote: No ranged attacks can be made by any character.

I warned you this was coming.

If you built your team without regard for this event, I'm just laughing that you didn't take me seriously right away. On to the events! Quote: DISQUALIFIED!: At the beginning of each player's turn, he or she rolls a d6 for each character in the Ring who is not a wrestler and has two or more action tokens.

On a result of 1 or 2, the character is immediately knocked out.

If you jump in the ring, taking your extra token and everything, and the ref catches you doing it (1d6, result of 1 or 2), you lose that character completely.

So you better hope it was worth it. Note that once a character is in the ring, if they don't take any actions (or wait for the ref to look away on clicks 6-9), they're at no risk;

It's just when they take an action (and therefore 2 tokens) that trouble comes. <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="1" border="0" class="tborder" width="100%" align="center" ">

Quote: POWER BROKER: A wrestler can use Exploit Weakness and Flurry if it does not already possess either or both of those powers.

After the resolution of an action in which an wrestler uses a power from this effect, deal the wrestler 1 unavoidable damage.

Finally, the fight gets scarier (well, if you were facing that Moloid) when the Power Broker steps in.

If you got stuck placing Impossible Man in the ring, the dial provides 8 clicks (in the middle) where you can gain either Flurry or Exploit Weakness.

Look for fun combos with Charge or Blades.

And afterwards take that 1 unavoidable damage. And that's it!

The UCWF tries to make things as smooth as possible, limiting most of its effects to 2 easy rules: 'Check Your Guns at the Door', and 'Stay Out of the Ring Until You're Called'. So, the scoring comes out like this: Accuracy: Spoiler  (Click in box to read) 5 for 5.

Really, how can you go wrong with a wrestling scenario?

Make a ring, require close combat brawlers, and you've pulled it off.

The 'blind ref' is a nice touch too. Comprehension: Spoiler  (Click in box to read) 4 for 5.

There's a little bit to figure out with the 'ring placement', and the interaction between Fair Fight and Disqualified!

Can be a bit tough the first time through.

Otherwise, it's pretty well spelled out. Playability: Spoiler  (Click in box to read) 1 for 5.

This dial will most often be turned down, as most teams in the modern game use a lot of range.

Also, it is a bit unfair to anyone without a speedster. Fun: Spoiler  (Click in box to read) 2 for 5.

Really, though, it depends on who you are.

If you love bricks, if you love Hulk, if you love WWF, or if you're playing a casual game, then this dial was made for you.

If you're more a range guy, or if you love the Sinister Syndicate, or if you love Counterstrike, or if you're in a major tournament, you might not go for this one. Overall: Spoiler  (Click in box to read) 2 for 5.

There are a lot of flaws to the dial, especially in a cutthroat tourney scene.

At home, with a friend, this can be a great time. Thanks for reading!

Please comment about your own thoughts, experiences, or suggestions for next week's dial!

Of all the event dials they have made.

This one was the best at are venue.

We have done it twice and both times everyone enjoyed it. We have ran every dial at our venue once.

Most of them we dont care for.

But Wizkids did a good job with this one.

By definition free actions like Outwit and Perplex don't give action tokens, are we sure it should go from 0 to 1 (like damage when crit hiting with incap) or should it be n/a to n/a (like crit hiting with Mind control)?

Quote: If any character that isn't a wrestler is given an action that would affect a wrestler, affect any square inside the Ring, or move the character into or through any square of the Ring, give the character an extra action token after the action resolves.

It's a bit iffy, due to the word 'extra', but I'm fairly certain it would still place one.

That's due to the wording of 'affect a wrestler' rather than 'target a wrestler' or 'attack a wrestler' or 'damage a wrestler'.

Poison would act the same way, and it'd be a hard argument to say that wouldn't count.

Maybe because I'm a huge WWE fan (How many saw the Backlash Pay-Per-View last night???

Christian is the new ECW champ!!!!

Shouts out to all the peeps...) , but I absolutely loved this Event Dial. In fact, to make things more authentic I used actual WWE liscenced mini-rings (from the 1997 WWF GRUDGE MATCH series of toys) that were the perfect scale with Heroclix figures.

It added such a humurous touch of realism that our games became instant classics. I remember pulling Professor X against the elasticy ropes and launching him against my opponent good times ha ha ha ha....

This is my favorite Event Dial.

So much so, that I made a map for it: http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/album.php?albumid=135 I have a quick question about DEFEND.

If a goon was using DEFEND to share his/her defense with a wrestler, would that get an 'extra token' of 1?

Is that ring seriously 9"x9"?

If so, I'm gonna find one on ebay and draw squares onto it.

I've got to argue no.

I believe that Poison words itself as a free action at the beginning of the turn, right?

But Defend doesn't consider itself an action at all. Quote: : Originally Posted by Poison Once at the beginning of your turn, as a free action this character deals 1 damage to each opposing adjacent character.

EDIT: Which now goes back to my incorrect statement about PC.

While Outwit and Perplex are free actions, PC is simply an effect;

Using it would not place a token.

I don't think Defend works -- for this reason: Quote: : Originally Posted by Defend Before any attack roll, any friendly adjacent character can replace its defense value with this character’s unmodified defense value (including a replacement defense value) for the duration of the attack.

The reason I don't think it works is that, if the edges of the ring are walls, then the Defend person on the outside is NOT adjacent to the dude in the ring.

Snap! You're right!

I looked at the wrong portion of the UCWF rules for that answer. Ironically, the guy in the ring could Defend someone outside... Which brings me to the next oddball interaction: a mastermind outside the ring can send damage to someone inside, but not vice versa.

Moving out of the way of the folding steel chair shot!

I should have been clearer in my question.

I was assuming the goon was INSIDE the ring with the wrestler.

Aside from any action tokens for moving, attacking, etc...would a goon (inside the ring) with DEFEND get a token when it was used? (A flying wrestler with Charge or HSS could carry said Defending goon around the ring)

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="1" border="0" class="tborder" width="100%" align="center" ">

Which brings about the better question: does the attacker take an extra token for having their attack deal damage to someone inside the ring?

If so, go Red Skull!

(A flying wrestler with Charge or HSS could carry said Defending goon around the ring) For that my previous answer should be sufficient: Defend is not an action at all, so it cannot be classified in that manner.
