Sony Microvault Problem in WinXP - Everything USB Community
Sony Microvault Problem in WinXP can anyone advise as to why my 256meg sony microvault is no longer recognised as a USB device in WinXP - it now shows up as a "security device" and wants a new driver???
This is quite wierd as it has been werking fine - the problem occured after using the Microvault on a Mac G4 Powerbook?
Which has werked between the Mac and PC ok in the past?
I've looked all over the net for some info but so far have come up with no quick fix - can anyone help?

I have bad news. This is how flash drives die.
The "security device" is the big clue.
Try salvaging your data:

How to fix the winXP Sony microvault 'security device' problem I have been trying for 3 months to find a solution to this problem.
I now have a working Microvault usm256u2 device.
AND my original data still intact.
Here's how to do it on WinXP:
1.
Unplug the Microvault
2.
Download the following file...
http://tech.prolific.com.tw/visitor/fcabdl.asp?fid=27979548
This is the Prolific "PL-2515 USB 2.0 Portable USB Flash Controller EZRecovery Tool" There are other files on this site, but this is the one that fixes the problem.
3.
Run the file and install the software (note this also installs the drivers that allow the 'Dead' microvault to be recognised as a 'security device'.
4.
Plug in the microvault.
(XP recognises it as a security device and installs the appropriate drivers)
5.
Run the Ez-Recover program.
(it should then recognise the size of your device, though it will think it is a 'prolific' one.
6.Ensure that you are prepared for the machine to RESET itself before you Hit the 'Recover button'.
7.
Whilst the machine reboots, un-plug the microvault
8.
When the machine is up and running, insert the microvault.
(the machine should recognise it as a USB device and will load the USB drivers, as normal).
In my case the original data was also left intact!
Hope this works for everyone else!
Thanks again to Peter ???
(Don't know his surname) and Prolific!

Sony Microvault Problem hi daveaclayton
i followed yer instructions to the letter - i've succeded in getting WinXP to recognise the Microvault as a USB device again (instead of a security device)
but when i try to open the device from My Computer i get a dialog popping up that says "Please insert disc into drive E:"
i'm very close to sussing it out but i hav a feeling i've damaged the microvault somehow - anyway thanx for yer help thus far

Thanks daveaclayton, Peter ???
And Prolific
Worked for me on a generic 128MB thumb drive that was being picked up as a security device and was unable to find drivers.
It only took seconds to complete but the warnings about loosing your data were for real with me.
Ran it on an old Gateway laptop running Win98se with out having any reset and was able to access the thumb drive 10 secs after starting Prolific EZ_Recover.
This was an easy fix on something I had paid $100 for and was ready to trash.

Thanks to daveaclayton .
I've been trying various PL-2515 drivers and utilities to to avail.
This worked a treat on my generic 128Mb flashdisk.
Thanks again

Sony microvault problem Thanks to all.
We tried Dave's instructions and the vault is now apparently recognized.
However, like Johnnychrome ,when I try to open it I get" Please insert disc into drive F:".
When I tried to save onto it it came up with "disc not formatted or formatted for MAC".
Under Properties, Hardware it is listed as
IC25N020ATCS04-0
Progress has been made but any other suggestions to try before I bin my trusty friend?

Doesn't anyone start their own threads here?
Does the drive show up at all?
If it doesn't, nothing can be done to save it, I'm afraid.

I have sorted the problem by contacting Sony.
Why did I not think of that before?

You were able to get in touch with Sony?

How was it resolved?

Success! Thank you all for your help.
I'm one of the lucky ones as all data was recovered using the EZ-Recover program and my stick is still recognized as a Sony rather than a Prolific.

Busted 64MB sony I have the same problem as jonnychrome and pals.
I deleted by 4 partitions on a linux box because it couldn't mount them anyway, and before making them again stuck it in a windows box.
Linux wont talk to it, being unable to measure the device and see how big it is.
The recover tools got me from the "security device" but not to a working device.
The various recover tools just mean that on windows I have drive F than cannot be read or formatted.
Someone managed to get support from Sony, how was that?
I'm driven to distraction trying to find support on their tangle of sites.

I have had xp spit the dummy a couple of times about formating my flash drive after things had jammed up during a large multi file transfer.
I used the app that came with the drive to format and it was all happy again.

Does this fix the drive, so that it will work normally on other PC's, or only one PC?
I have the same problem with an A-data drive, will it work on it?
( it isn't my drive, so it's on windows, not suse )
Thanks

Unable to modify data stored on MV USM256U2 Hi,
Anyone encountered any weird instances where you delete a file from the Microvault (MV), window's showed files deleted.
However, as soon replug the MV into the USB drive, the data's still in the MV.
Same applies for data storing.
When data is stored to the MV, window's shows file saved.
But when MV is unplugged and replugged, the data's not in the MV.
What should I do?
I've:
1. disabling Norton AV before
2.
Running EzRocovery and Formatter11301.exe
3.
Both EZRecover and Formatter11301 didn't work.
Any suggestions guys?
I can't delete data
I can't store data
I can't re-format
Inputs appreciated...

Hi all ,
I am stuck with Sony Microvault usm128u2 not getting accessed.
saw some threads with similar problem, so putting the question.
My device is recognised as USB mass storage upon connecting, The popup says Sony 2.0 Device.
MY COMPUTER too shows it as Removable Disk.
But problem is, when I try to access it, the error message comes "The file or Directory is corrupted and unreadable"
Tried formatting, but windows is unable to complete formatting.
In DOS mode, the format goes on smooth, but upon accssing, again it says, "file or directory is corrupted"
My OS is XP Pro.
Have tried fomatting and recovering data a couple of times, but the device remains "Visible but not accessible "
Please help
Regards,
Vipul

if after that ypu will receive a message like: "Please insert ..."
or Recovery Fail !!
( x, x) do:
start EzRecovery Tool
click recover
click ok
and at half of recovery process ( not at end )
unplug your MicoVault drive
after that:
plug in
click recover
click ok
now you recovery processer will tell you that it`s ok(if it will tell you recovery faild !!
(x,x) -> try again this process)
now restart
plug in
enjoy
sorry for my bad english
worked for my SONY MicroVault Drive USM128U2
but now it`s recognised as a GENERIC ONE....

Worked for my EasyDisk Flash Drive / Thumbdrive This is the only solution that had worked for me after so long a search on the web!
The thumbdrive had worked on my PC some time back.
I guess some Windows Updates must have screwed up the drivers.
It didn't even work on Windows XP SP1 or SP2.
But the Prolific drivers had saved the day, though it did nearly give me a heart attack.
Cos on the first time running the software, it detected 256MB instead of 128MB.
After clicking on Recover, it said "Recovery Failed".
After re-inserting the thumbdrive, it now detects 0MB!
Anyways, Windows XP does detect it as a USB Mass Storage Drive once again, despite all the error messages and re-insertion of the thumbdrive.
Thanks again all of you!

Thank you(!!!) neagoeg and billyd for the info on the Sony 256microvault drive EzRecovery program AND method to use it.
A colleague had a Sony usm256u2 that would register as a 'security device' and start WIZARD to find a driver but the flash drive was NOT visible on the list of drives on WinExplorer.
Ran the recovery program 3 times and got 3 recovery failed (0-.-1);
Rf(1.-3); rf(1,-3).
I then removed the micro vault WHILE the Exrecovery program was running AS neagoeg carefully pointed out.
I plugged the unit back in AND, the sony was THEN VISIBLE on WinExplorer!!
And all data was present.
As has been mentioned on this thread, the sony had become a generic mass media drive and now appears as: Removable Drive (j: .
But, files on it can be deleted and files can be clicked-dragged+dropped onto it successfully.
In short, IT WORKS AGAIN!!!
Only one small problem remains.
The 'programs' that come with the Sony Micro Vault: Autologin;
Autozip; Passwordlock;
PClock; and FORMAT do NOT work as they do not recognize --apparently-- that it Really IS a Sony drive since the EzRecovery program procedure must have removed some software identifier(s) on the micro vault so it now thinks it is just a generic flash memory storage unit.
QUESTION: IF, I can find the Disk that came with my wife's Sony micro vault drive of the same type-size, could that be used to restore the now generic micro vault to again recognize itself as a Sony...
So the 4 feature programs would work on it...
Or is that information [software identifier(s)] keyed (and unique) between each specific disk and drive, or is it put on the micro vault at the factory so that those 4 features are now 'gone'?
Whatever the answer, once again, great thanks to neagoeg and billyd for the info that permitted the recovery of the microvault!!!
[[The TW site for the recovery program would not 'come up' so I assume that maybe it has fallen off the corner-edge of the world?]]

Hi.
Found the Sony CD small-disk with the drivers and 4 'frill' programs on it.
However, that still did NOT permit recovery of the Sony usm256u2 to FULL functional use (to permit the 4 'frill' apps to work on it.
It remains a generic (now!
DISK) drive ... ...sigh.
Could 'Ghost' [program] taking data (bit by bit of whole drive) FROM a know fully functional Sony flash drive of same size TO the generic return the generic drive back to a Sony drive so the 4 'frill' apps would work?
Tried loading drivers on a WIN98 just in case the ex-Sony, now generic drive would accept it...
NADA! No go!
Almost makes one think in terms of becoming a 'hacker' --for one's OWN hardware-sofeware ONLY!
Disk size still shows 249MB available suggesting that the 'system management area' on the Sony flash is still present but un-accessable.
Oh, on the instruction NOTES for the Sony...
It does state, 'Please do not format the device on your computer to avoid any change of the specification.' =~ prevent the drive from accepting the 4 'frill' programs!
fredb "never statisfied even with 97.3% performance...
...sigh" Cyclo.
