XP pro CD Key error - JCXP Forums
Hi all. I have experienced an unusual problem with my copy of Windows XP Pro CD key.
For no apparent reason, the number has changed twice in the past 48 hours for no apparent reason.
I would add that I am head of ops for a software review service I am due to launch in May this year.
I have been into computing since around 1989 and on the xp platform since 98 and have never herd of this one before.
Additionally I have attempted to change the key back, with no success.
The first time it changed both browsers (Firefox and IE6) kept going "Not Responding) however since an image restore that problem has now ceased and I have up'd to IE7 and everything appears ok except the number changed yesterda for the second time.
I should also point out that this has no relations to the IE7 upgrade since it happened first prior to this.
Has anyone any idea as to what might be going on?
Cheers

I am a tad confused here, XP was released in 2001.
I don't think Beta's were out in 1998 but I may be wrong.
Have you done the usual anti virus and spyware scans?

Oops sorry, my mistake.
I meant to say been using the w98 since 98.
Duh is me.
Yes I have done all the antispware antivirus reg cleans etc etc.
This is a testing machine so is extremely well maintained.
The incident followed a hard drive upgrade and wxp re-installation.
All the upgrades went in as usual.
However I normally custom install, removing the Windows Malicious Removal Tool because of the intense clean ups we do ourselves.
I think I may have errored in haste and let one pass me by.
If anyone can make any possible suggestion that might at least point us in the right direction I would be extremely grateful.
For instance, we have had it suggested that it might be because of frequent hardware upgrades, but this particular system has only had the 1 within the past 4 months.
None of us here at Freeware On Trial have got any clue as to why it has changed.
Does anyone know if Microsoft has adopted some new unusual policy?

When you say your key has changed, what exactly are you refering to?
Your PID?

Agreed, what you're saying is a tad bit confusing to me mate.
Product keys don't change.

Hi,
I seem to be causing some confusion here.
Sorry about that, maybe it's me.
I've had xp since 2003, I was on Windows 98 from 1998 until then.
The installation CD number that you input when installing xp has changed three times.
I know it isn't supposed to WinWizard, but as God is my witness, it has.

This is what's confusing about it.
When you enter your activation key(5 sets of 5 format), that key is used by windows to make a Product ID.
The PID is formatted like such: -***- - .
Its been months since I've been on Xp but I believe you can find it in System in the control panel or by right-clicking on My Computer, then go to Properties.
The activation key isn't as widely found after install.
Did you use something like Magical Jellybean to find it.
How did you come to realise it had changed and is windows still activated?

Your xp cd key is the same as it was when you installed (a legit) version of windows and the only thing that will change is the activation key , and thats only when you change video cards or ect ect , and still then it shouldnt matter .
Your xp cd key has to be the same unless your sticker on your cd can magically change .
Other than that you need to contact microsoft , nobody here can help you only microsoft can .
To me it sounds like you have a pirated version .
Thats just my opinion .
Ive had xp since it came out and ive never had my xp key change on me once .
i hope you can resolve your problem

Sorted.
I used ViewKeyXP to recall the product key, which I have just learned from another forum and I Quote: , "only reports the correct key about half the time"
Thanks for the head up rnb, I used JellyBean.
It shows the correct key.
