saving the racetrack - Local Race Chat

It's clear, with low car counts, something is going to have to be done soon to save the track!

Getting fans won't be a problem if the cars show up. It needs to be a concerted effort between Michael and the drivers.

None of this stupid vicious cycle of "well if he paid more we'd bring our cars," and "I'd pay more if I had more cars" The track administration and drivers need to sit down and work out a plan to make the place profitable. The two other local tracks run on Saturday, so I'm quite certain it's possible to get enough cars split between the two. I think canceling the supers was a step in the right direction.

That eliminates the guys who outspend everyone from dominating the show.

Now, it's time to find a way to get some of the many, many limited cars out there to come to the track. Copyright © Local Race Chat.com: Local Race Chat I've heard a lot of stuff about how there's not time to run on Friday nights.

That could be solved by running only four classes. In my humble opinion, the Limited Late Model, Super Street, 270 and UCAR are the four classes to run. I like the mods but last week there was only one mod.

The Young guns class is great too, but it's becoming superstreet light. Limited and Super Street are two classes fans want to see.

The UCAR and 270 class are the ones who have supported the track the most. Open the pits at 4:30, start practice at six (each class gets one 15 minute session), heats at 7:00 and racing by 8:00.

With four classes that gives you three hours to finish the show before curfew. If you get a solid group of drivers 10-15 in each class, I think you can draw a good fan base from the area.

Maybe Michael can have a meeting, get a headcount of drivers who will definitely commit for a certain payout and then make that happen.

Then the fans will come.

Jbracer. Very well thought out post and much appreciated.

It would be an absolute tragedy to see another track close due to low car counts.

Cape Fear-CARS will do our very best to support the track.

Though the crowd doesn't come to see the vintage exhibition we hope to draw some attention to Hammerdown and hopefully entice a different type of spectator to come see the old race cars.

We want Hammerdown to succeed and will start promoting HDS any way possible.

I've already had RacersReunion.com express an interest in having a radio broadcast from the track.

RacersReunion.com is a SC based website committed to the history of stock car racing, they would be a big voice for Hammerdown, though their interest would be primarily be in the vintage cars.

Now that Hammerdown is hosting a vintage show once a month hopefully we should see an increase in spectators in the near future, that's my plan anyway.

I've been reading about other tracks having vintage races and the response is very positive for the tracks.

Of course the real thrill is watching the Supers, Limiteds, UCAR, Younguns, and 270's (who do have a large car count). Copyright © Local Race Chat.com: Local Race Chat - Keep the faith.

You are right JB, something had better be done real soon.

Steps are being taken in the right direction, but some are being taken the wrong way too.

There are alot of fans, maybe even most, that do not come here on LRC .

With that being said: what is going to happen this friday night, a holiday w/e,when some of the locals from the Red Springs area decide to go to the races?

When they went before, they heard it announced that the track runs every friday night, and now they show up for a race, and the track is closed. I am not by any means bashing the track.I have handed out and put up hundreds, if not thousands of flyers and Mike knows I will do anything I can to support him.

But come on, cancelling a race on a holiday w/e 5 days in advance? Copyright © Local Race Chat.com: Local Race Chat A program ran with the classes you mentioned may be the answer.

I think we need to get the fans there. You can pay good purses with full stands regardless of car counts and I have heard very few complaints on the action in the races from fans.

So if we can get the fans there, then up the purses, the cars should show up. I ask that anyone who reads this thread, to post some ideas to get fans in.

When they show up one time, more than likely, they will be back.

So lets hear some ideas, no matter how crazy they sound we have to do something or HammerDown is gonna be the next featured track on the Ghost Tracks Forums. If you really look around , its tracks that have these sorts of promotions that do well in tough times good idea put a basketball goal near the concession stand and let the kids shoot for a free fountain drink or popcorn, snack bar delivery to the stands( order via cell phone),season passes, area students in free, etc yotas post was on the money and loaded w/ workable solutions The track itself is very good and mr weeks has been VERY active with upgrades and changes to the program, ....he should be applauded for that I doubt that there are many people that have gone to the track and raced or watched that can say anything about the racing surface and/or the racing itself

Make the gate prices as such..."the whole family for 20 bucks.

Mom, dad, and all your kids (under 12 or 15) get in for 20 bucks".

I hear that 20 times a day on the radio, its either florence or dillon's advertisement on 92.9.

And ADVERTISE!!! one radio commercial every once in a blue moon will not cut it.

Dublin actually started a TV ad this past week....

Anyone see their stands saturday night

What about having some cars on display at local places of business?

I'm sure the business owners would like the idea and you could give the drivers some extra points for doing it?

Have a sign displayed with the car advertising the track and of course flyers to hand out also.I can babysit a car a couple of times if the drivers can't. Copyright © Local Race Chat.com: Local Race Chat T-11, BBQ, and Yota all have great ideas, ya'll keep them coming.

I talked to a guy sat at Dublin that hadn't been to a dirt race in 15 years.

He said he heard that commercial on 92.9 and had to come check it out.

I mentioned hammerdown to him and he said he had no idea about the track.

A lot of people don't know about it and if they do they know of it as the old go cart track.

Need to spread the word around it is a Friday night Car Track.

They need a bigger sign, the one they got now looks like a Realtor's sign, I missed it the first time I went there.

Billboard's are expensive but do get a lot of notice.

Perhaps someone that supports that track that lives on a major highway would put one up for free admission to the track (I'd do it if I lived on a big road).

Advertise in Fayetteville Observer or Steals and Deals.

Post flyers at auto parts stores with managers permission. Offer Police/Fire Dept special ticket prices.

Fort Bragg has over 60,000 people, target the soldiers, since Fayetteville doesn't offer much in the way of outdoor entertainment I know soldiers would come to the track if they knew it existed, hence military appreciation nights advertised in the Fort Bragg Paraglide, just go online to the Fort Bragg website and search Paraglide. Copyright © Local Race Chat.com: Local Race Chat Pass out tickets at the gate and call a number allowing that person to upgrade to a pit pass for free. Hire homey the clown to create animals from balloons....naw, scrap that one.

My wife works on pope air force base if she had sum fliers shed gladly pass them out shes been tellin people about hds and tellin them where it is hopefully they will start going and if i had a motor in our car wed gladly take it and set up any where we could with fliers and a sign for hds just to let people know and maybe get them interested and you know the kids would want 2 climb in and ask questions

I race for forty years in Florida and I have seen the good and the bad.

One thing that has helped the most just started in the last few years is running one of your big classes one week then on of the others the next.

Limikted Lates one week, Mods the next.

Then the cars can support Dublin and Hammerdown with out running two nights a week.

Dublin Speedway Commercial on the Speed Channel.

I bet we have seen that commercial about 30 times during the past two weeks.

Kudos to DMS!
