Does your service require a login and password?

Most users of BSNL have indicated that it does.

If so, the PAP2 is not set up for this sort of service.

It's generally used with a router, and that's probably what you'll need to make it work.

Hi, Chris. Thanks for the data.

In my PM I missed the fact that you had already posted once. I hate to say this, but with the round trip time that you recorded on myspeed (over 9 seconds!!) and the max pause recorded by the forum test (1.6 seconds), I can't imagine that Vonage is going to work for you using this internet service provider.

I think your only hope is to make contact with your ISP and hope that they will cooperate in running the problem down.

Unfortunately, VoIP phone service is utterly dependent on a good broadband service, and, at the moment at least, you don't have it. As an aside, I assume that you're removing your computer from the setup and plugging the PAP2 directly into the modem when you want to use it.

Is this correct? Usually DSL service requires a logon and password using PPPoE.

I don't believe that the PAP2 can be configured that way.

It's normally used behind a router.

Assuming that you can get the internet service in shape, I believe that you're going to need to get a router to set this thing up.

However, I wouldn't recommend spending the money unless you can get decent test results first.

Hi chris0220 dont worry i understand you problem to use the linksys pap2-u need to have a router utstarcom is not a router -let me explain adsl from bsnl has only modem--its not a router so get a router and connect the pap2 to that router adsl>router>pap2>and dial ****on the phone and reboot the n/w.. for more inf get me at shaikmasoodahmed@gmail.com sidbreja New Forum Member Joined: Oct 04, 2006 Posts: 2 Posted: Wed Oct 04, 2006 2:11 pm      Post subject: BSNL Type II / Type IV Modems

I have a Vonage PAP2, and a friend of mine has the same.

His adapter works fine on a type IV modem provided by BSNL, but mine is not working since I have a type II modem...

BSNL has run out of the type IV modems, and I am not sure if they are available in open market....

Is there a solution to this? we tried running his modem in our house and it worked fine so no problem with the line or anything else.

Does anybody knows what is the difference between a type II and a type IV modem provided by BSNL? Seems like you are suggesting in your message that a router between the modem and the phone adapter is going to solve this problem..

If so, do you have a recommendation on which router to buy. I activated the adapter in US and going to use it in Rishikesh, India I thank you in anticipation and look forward to hear from you.

Dear sidbreja, I believe that the cost of the type IV modem from BSNL is INR2000. cost of a wireless router in ritchie street, chennai is around the same price (INR 2300) and wired router will be few hundreds less. So, I suggest you to go ahead with a wireless router rather than adsl modem type4 from bsnl since it could be of use in future too. im gonna buy a netgear wireless router today.

Hope it gets resolved today!
