Hey all! I basically need to lose quite a few pounds.

I have Celiac Disease, though, so I have to do it gluten-free and I am baffled.

I know it's pretty rare for someone with Celiac as the main trouble to be heavy, but here I am.

I had the typical weight loss when I was a little kid, 7-10, but when I was 10, my mom died, and the resulting stress and depression, etc, played with my symptoms.

So it was about seven and a half years of weight GAIN after that until they dx'd it.

Maaan. After I was dx'd two years ago I dropped 50-60 pounds so fast I didn't menstruate for two months straight.

But it seems like it's let off and I still weigh over 200.

Now, I am a stocky girl, and 5'7", but I do not need something like 60 extra lbs on me.

I miss being able to get pants at the mall. So yeah, I dunno what to do, none of those online diet places factors in the gf diet.

I also *want* to exercise, I really do, but I don't have the energy.

*sigh* I miss swimming! So I am at a loss and would maybe like some ideas as to what to do?

I get the part about being ok with yourself, but wanting to not carry the extra weight.

I also really get the part about wanting to exercise, but am too tired! The celiac - that part isn't me... However, I would like to suggest looking into Weight Watchers.

They have 2 plans (online or meetings) that may accomodate your needs.

They have a flex plan where foods are assigned points and based on your height, weight, goals - they assign you a daily point goal.

You can eat any foods - but to lose - stay in your point range.

Also - they give you points for exercising - I get a daily point for just walking the dog! WW also has a core plan where they give you a list of foods - and you eat what you want of those foods. I've been on the flex plan before and did lose 40lbs.

I recently gained some of that back - so my hubby and I went on it again in january and I've lost 22 - some of which is what I gained.

The points plan works well for me and my hubby. Take a look at it and see if it might work for you.

You can see a lot online - and if you can't - pm me and I'll check out the points on foods for you! linda

Thank you, Linda!

I had forgotten that Weight Watchers does the online thing now.

I am familiar with the points program because my friend and her mom did it way back when I was 12.

I will definitely look into it!

I don't know about diet much except that sugar is a really bad thing.

I have noticed that sugar can cause all kinds of things to go wrong with us...like GERD or heartburn for instance.

If someone has that and cuts all sugar from their diet...the heartburn stops completely and I know this from dealing with it myself.

It's hard, though. But to lose weight...I always say that working out works for me.

It is the only thing that does because I don't really eat enough calories or carbs or fat to make a difference.

I walked yesterday with hubby.

We walked in the great weather ...sunny and breezy and in the 70s.

We walked along the waters edge on the sidewalk and we just took it slowly because of my crazy leg trouble....but I was so busy looking around and enjoying the scenery with the camera...that I didn't even realize until we got back home..that I had walked for over an hour and 15 mins.

That's big for me.

I think walking is the best.

I love swimming too, but sometimes it really makes my upper back hurt for some reason.

But it's still fun.

Just find something fun and relaxing and just do it.

It is usually something you have to force yourself to do at first, but once you get into a habit..like any other habit(good or bad)..you will feel "off" if you miss it. I'm sorry that I don't have diet advice, but I do know that my friends have done the Weight Watcher thing and it is a really good one.

I wish you lots of luck.

I looked into Weight Watchers.

I had forgotten that it cost that much.

Meh. I guess about all I can do is try and go for a walk more often.

I mean, I don't eat that much, still.

Holdover habit from when eating made me hurt so much.

If only we had 70 degree weather here!

It's at least sunny today, I could try to go up to the wildlife refuge.

I love their trails, but the handicapped walking path is nice, too.

^^ EDIT: I was just thinking, I used to walk over five miles every school day.

If that day included gym class, I could top eight.

My school had a rotten layout and my classes were as far apart as humanly possible, it seemed.

I was amazed at how far I walked when the nurse started handing out pedometers.

*wonders where hers went* How on EARTH did I do that, plus classes, plus homework, all before I was diagnosed?

There ya' go! I just love it.

Walking in the middle of nature is wonderful.

It doesn't even feel like you are exercising.

I love to notice the little things.

I try to focus on everthing about the walk itself.

I sometimes stop and close my eyes for a minute.

I feel the sun on my face or the breeze.

Sometimes, I even try to just listen...the rustle of the leaves or the palm trees, the sounds of birds, the ploppin sound of a turtle in the water...it goes on and on.

I take pix. I also love to take a sketchbook or a journal to jot down the things I feel all around me.

I think things like that should be a treatment for anxiety and depression.

It works for me. When you go for that walk...make it an "experience" and not just exercise.

I love it and that may be the only way I can get it done.

^^ Hm, if you don't eat much, could it be your body is in power-save mode?

Holding on to every little calorie for fear there won't be enough tomorrow?

If so, you might profit from more, small meals throughout the day, at regular times.

So your body can say "Not to worry, there's more to come in 2 hours". Of course those small meals need to be healthy, too.

Veggies, fruit, nuts, lean meats, fish, low-fat dairy products...the usual. The way my b/f and I eat these days is somewhat derived from the Men's Health Abs Diet (if I recall the name correctly), which also includes some pretty heavy exercise (not so recommended for spoonies ).

Used as a point of orientation, rather than a bible, it's pretty useful to get a feel for what constitutes healthy eating while it still gives you room to fit it to your needs.

And the book wasn't all that expensive either.

Certainly cheaper than WW

But I bet there's something to it.

I'll definitely be keeping that thought in mind.

I have a doc appt coming up soon- I'll ask there.

^^

Hi Lobster, Weight watchers doesn't need to cost anything.

You could borrow the introduction book and points calculator from friends who aren't using them, or you can find all the information contained in them online. Although lots of people love the meetings, which cost money, you can also join a good support forum online, like Bootcamp Buddies or 3fatchicks, and weigh in and be accountable there. It's my favourite program! Good luck, Melissa

Or you can track your calorie input and expenditure for free on fitday.com.

You want to aim for 500 cals under your daily expenditure - no more than that.

Just to add my input about gluten free diets and loosing weight look into the book 'Eat Right For(4) Your Type and ask your doc what he/she might think about that type of diet.

Yes yes yes! Rose!

She is absolutely right.

My hubby and I are eating from the book and it is amazing how it really makes you feel better.

Ok, so I'm not totally gluten free yet, but I am working on it.

I just don't like the gf bread.

But the fruits and veggies along with the meat they recommend for our blood type is amazing.

Gotta love it.

Hello i have to avoid gluten in my diet as well.

Im not a celiac but i am also gaining weight. i eat very little junk foods and avoid the fatty meats (apart from duck) in my diet.

Im also off dairy foods (you would think someone who was off dairy would be able to loose weight). i do wonder what i should eat, but putting it into practice doesnt always work. Diets dont work (something i learnt on my university course) but lifestyle choices do work.

If you can change even some eating habits for life then thats a start.

Its also much better than dieting but returning to your old eating ways after your diet. i find my downfall is sweet stuff.

Lately ive been eating a lot of chocolate related items (dairy free of course).

Its ok to spoil oneself occasionally (i dont mean having a meal with gluten in it lol), but i find that spoiling myself leads to overeating.

Switching from spread/butter/margarine to mayonnaise in my sandwiches (homemade) saves 20% fat. One thing i have found that does work is to limit myself.

I dont carry anything left over until the next day of week to avoid overindulgence on some days.

Here are some limits i put on myself (all gluten and milk free alternatives in my case); 2 bags of plain crisps per day 8 squares of chocolate per day 2 biscuits per day 3 jaffa cakes per day (about to run out as its my 1st time in 3 years of eating jaffa cakes) unlimited nuts (unless cashews or brazils) per day as much raw vegetables per day as i can eat try drinking water or juice instead of eating. duck only once per week if at all i hope to make some unbuttered homemade popcorn soon.

Thats an excellent snack as its only 35 calories per 100 grams! Im not sure if i should limit bread or pretzels?

I already have small bags pretzels.

I dont eat them very often.

Can homemade bread be less calorific than shop bought?

Or is it just better for you as you know what you are putting in your bread? Too much salt and too low potassium in the diet can lead to water retention. When eating out i try and have things without sauces if possible.

I find i can loose weight when on holiday as it can be harder to find my sweet snacks when im abroad.

However due to this bug i had about a month ago, i think my body is scared to eat less in case im ill again. When i was at university before i learnt how to cook with home support i ate breakfast, omelette made with eggs and mushrooms only lunch, a plate of vegetables from the canteen (wish they had done tuna mayo jacket potato as thats something i eat quite often now) dinner was smoked fish and suitable raw vegetables. i used to drink unlimited orange juice during the day as well as black tea, this used to contain 3 sugars. snacks were plain crisps, nuts, sesame snaps, plain chocolate or 1 cake bar/2 jam tarts per day. i lost 2 stone in weight by switching to this healthy lifestyle.

But now ive put one stone back on.

I think my fibro was relatively ok (still undiagnosed though) and i could still exercise then.

I was walking from one end of the campus to the other at least 3 or 4 times a day to get to class. Post university things got worse.

I began comfort eating and managed to learn how to cook.

But i was cooking sweet stuff as well as savoury!

Ive also caught a few colds/bugs this academic year so although at the beginning of the year i was walking 3 times a week to and from my bus stop, it was more sporadic after xmas break.

Im just hoping i will be ok next academic year and be able to keep up with the work. i have now cut down recently from black tea with 3 sugars to black tea with 1/2 or no sugar.

I sometimes use honey in my tea but i think family members tend to put too much in.

Im wondering if the honey in tea contributed to my weight gain?

I hope soon to be able to use my trampoline again. Alexis

I love weight watchers.

I tried everything for years and could never drop the weight.

On this, I have lost 9 pounds in 2 weeks.

I know it will slow down soon though.

The online option is about 16 bucks a month ( the first 7 days are free right now) if I remember correctly.

I you can't do that right now, there are plenty of us that will look up points for you so you can do it too! As far as exercising goes.

The doc and my PT said water exercise only.

I do some squats, march in place, then kick my leg to the back and front, then to the side. Then I float with my back straight up and down for about 10 minutes ( water traction...good for the spine and helps any back pain) That is about all the exercises I do and it takes about 30 minutes to do it.Maybe you could try that? The doc also said not to take off swimming because it is hard on our bodies.

Just walking around in the water is great for you. The rule in water always is..nothing should hurt.

If it does...stop!Can you tell I love water exercise lol.
