Apple iPhone - Archery Forum - Australia's archery related forum
Apple's just released their mobile phone devise.
When I first heard about it I pictured the Motorola Rokr style divise, of course I should have thought more and given Apple more credit.
Looking at the demo I think I'll try and get one of these as soon as they come out.
The software looks awesome.
About time someone with some brains wrote an OS for a mobile correctly.
Comes in 4Gb and 8Gb models and acts as a iPod as well.
Also has built in wireless networkin so it can connect to any wireless network for internet use.
Also it has no keypad, everything is done on it's touch screen.
So you can have a normal keypad for dialling, and a qwerty keyboard for texting, although I really don't approve of anything written by someone's thumbs.
And for the naysayers who don't think this will be succesful, well iPod wasn't teh first MP3 player.

Sounds great!
What I really want them to do is make a new generation Newton PDA device, incorporating iPod functions and a phone.
Then I'd only have to carry one "do it all" device with me.
...keeping my fingers crossed

Yeah something that runs TargetPlot would be neat.
This uses OS X as a base so it is possible that it could have software written for it.
Palm has dismissed it along the lines of 'we couldn't make a PDA/Phone, so what makes Apple think they can?'
Uummm, Apple actually understands user interface design, that's why Palm.

That's very cool.
I won't buy one in the foreseeable future - I've got an ever-expanding list of things I'm going to spend money on first - but it really puts the competitors in their place.
PDA's haven't gone anywhere in about a decade;
A decade ago Palms had handwriting recognition, that they still use.
They've now got colour screens and SD cards - big deal.
I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this eat them alive, and it would be nothing more than they deserved.

Any idea what the battery life is like?
That screen must suck a bit of power

Ok, this all look flashy and cool....
I'd be scared to go out this such thing....waayyyy too much screen area to break on corner of pools tables while in your pocket (for those who can't read between the line, yes, it comes from -bad- experience....)

I don't think it will flop like past Windows based attempts because the devise's software is built around it.
Go check out the user interface demos.
Very impressive.

Very impressive. no doubt it is using an OLED screen which means battery life will be greatly improved.
Plus every man and his dog will want to upgrade phone/ ipod to get one of these, except for the poor.

...keeping my fingers crossed That's pretty much what this is.
It's a mobile computer that has iPod and phone functionality and has an embedded OS X with a redesigned UI specifically to make the device "work".

The lock-in with Cingular is interesting - and leads to the potential for a similar 'big telco' lock-in with the Australian release, in terms of the cellphone side of the equation.
They're doing stuff that is interestingly beyond an MVNO relationship in various ways.
They may redefine the notion of phone/network integration if they stay on track with what they're clearing planning to do here.
A VoIP/SIP softphone app for it would be good.

Do you see it as a positive thing?
Just heard from my Dad that it may be 2008 before we see it in action here.

I was paraphrasing a bit, here is the actual article
Quote: : Palm CEO Ed Colligan has revealed disinterest in Apple's forthcoming iPhone cellular handset when questioned about the matter at a breakfast gathering, according to the Mercury News, and laughed at the idea that any company -- including Apple -- could easily draw customers in the difficult smart-phone sector.
"We've learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone," Colligan said.
"PC guys are not going to just figure this out.
They're not going to just walk in." Apple exploded into the digital music market in December of 2001 with the debut of its first-generation iPod, and has since worked to establish and maintain its dominance in the market.
Apple still retains its leadership over the digital music industry, reporting the shipment of more than 8,792,000 iPods during its previous quarter.
The fact that he doesn't think Apple can walk into this market is foolish.

I wouldn't buy it.
Screen would get really scratched.
It's not 3G.
No third party apps.
(Apparantly.)
NO REPLACEABLE BATTERY.
(That's what really kills the deal for me.)
