Charlski's blog #5: Money, money, money! - The Student Room

Charlski's blog #5: Money, money, money! Well, freshers week is now over and lectures start today.

Overall I've had a far cheaper week than I'd expected, and have spent about £100 overall.

This has included food, drink, going out, sea monkees, a couple of trips into central London, and a train ticket home at the weekend. This means I have spent less than I can allow myself per week, and as I don't plan on going home often, I will hopefully have a bit more in future :) This morning I received the first installments of my loan, which come to £2767.92, so I currently have a balance of about £3050 until my next payment in january.

Of this, I will have to pay £1499.40 in October as the first installment of my accommodation fees.

Thus I have about £1551 as spending money, which works out as something like £119 per week (although it doesn't matter so much if I do end up in my overdraft, as I will receive larger amounts and my accommodation will be less due to shorter terms (silly, isn't it!) later on in the academic year.

Re: Charlski's blog #5: Money, money, money! Sea monkees?

Re: Charlski's blog #5: Money, money, money! I am now £35 poorer, having just bought my sports federation card, and having joined two sports clubs at uni.

Bah!

Hi Charlski Just wanted to say hello from the whataboutmoney.info team.

The website is a reliable, impartial source of information about money for young adults, from the Financial Services Authority.

We've had permission from The Student Room to get involved as they thought the site might be helpful for you. It's good to see you planning how to make your money last.

One thing to consider, is that the festive season happens before your next loan installment, and might mean you go over your weekly budget!

You might want to put a sum aside now, to cover this. Otherwise, it looks like you're doing a great job!

:)

What loans did you take out to receive 2700 this September?

Thanks I'd try to chat and use correct punctuation but I'm currently wearing thick gloves to type and it's too cold to sleep!

Re: Charlski's blog #5: Money, money, money! Is it not because you're in or near london?

Re: Charlski's blog #5: Money, money, money! Hi Charlski -as you are talking about managing money as a student I thought you might be interested to know about the new Neon MasterCard Prepaid Card.

It's a great way to stay in control of your finances as you can only spend what's on the card, Plus Neon MasterCard has great reward benefits at over 1000 of your favourite stores online. I work for Neon and just thought this information might help you out and be a good way for you to manage your money easily.

In case you're interested here's a link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WZe9ZJs4a0 which tells you how it works and here's a link to the website: http://www.neon-prepaid-card.com/foneon

Re: Charlski's blog #5: Money, money, money! Hah, I think I can cope without.

One of my main aims has been to totally avoid having too tangled a mess of cards and accounts.

What I HAVE done (which really works for me) is to transfer my money into a savings account and then transfer the amount (about £50-£75) I aim to spend onto my debit every week.

The debit has an overdraft which is my 'just in case' fallback if I'm really stuck, and the idea of something which is basically a debit not backed up by an overdraft is just not something that would leave me feeling comfortable as I'd have to resort to using a different card and would just end up losing track of where my money is and how much I have. It might be suitable for someone of say, 16 and living at home, but for me, living on my own a couple of hundred miles from 'help', it's just not the sort of thing which I think is suitable.
