Geography/Geology Applications/Offers/Discussion 2010 - The Student Room
Geography/Geology Applications/Offers/Discussion 2010
I can't find one of these for this year yet!
I apologise if there already is one, please post a link to it if it exists.
I'll start us off, I'm applying to do Geography BA at Oxford, Durham, UCL, Bristol and KCL :) I can't wait to start uni, but I'm really worried about my personal statement.
I've found it really hard to write :( How is everybody else doing?
Xx

Re: Geography/Geology Applications/Offers/Discussion 2010
I was hoping someone would eventually start one of these!
:D
I can't see one for this year either so I think you're alright :)
I'm applying for 2010 as well for Geography at Oxford, Bristol, Southampton, Exeter and Birmingham - all BAs except at Brizzle where I think they make me do a BSc!
Sent mine off a couple of days ago (Friday), but the personal statement was really hard to do, agreed!

Geog BSc
only chosen durham and nottingham so far, liked leeds and birmingham but didn't like bristol.
i didn't find p.s.
Hard to write, the hardest bit for me is cutting out another 300 characters, 4000 is just not enough room!!!!

Re: Geography/Geology Applications/Offers/Discussion 2010
Yey we did need one of these!
I've applied to Cambridge, Durham, Nottingham, Edinburgh & Sheffield for Bsc.
How did everyone else decide whether to go for BA or BSc or was the decision obvious?
I found it really hard, although looking at most courses doesn't look like it'll make a massive difference I hope...

Re: Geography/Geology Applications/Offers/Discussion 2010
I'm applying to do Geography BSc (F800) for 2010 entry at:
Durham
Bristol
St Andrews
Nottingham
Leicester
I didn't find the personal statement too bad really, but 4,000 characters is way too short!
:woo:

Re: Geography/Geology Applications/Offers/Discussion 2010
Quote: : For me it was a straight-forward decision!
BSc all the way....
I like that most universities offer both human and physical electives all the way through.
I just find some of the BA topics a bit 'flowery' at times.
:S

Re: Geography/Geology Applications/Offers/Discussion 2010
Quote: : Ummm well it was pretty easy for me, I've always enjoyed the human side of stuff more (apart from the wider physical topics like plate tectonics....).
Some of the physical topics make me want to go to sleep.
Well, only one really (ecosystems...)
Plus my Alevels suit a BA wayyy more and I know most places say it doesn't make a difference, but I think it does at Bristol?
Didn't want to risk my Maths counting as an extra 'science'.
You're right about it not making a huge difference in a lot of places though - I think it was Birmingham who said basically just pick whichever course you want the credit for afterwards!
Some unis say whichever course you do that's what you do your dissertation in, but that's it I think.

Re: Geography/Geology Applications/Offers/Discussion 2010
Quote: : Yeah thinks like sediment flows or whatever make me worry about choosing BSc :S I'm mostly interested in the environmental stuff!
I just went with what my A levels were more suited too aswell.
I really liked the sound of the course at Bristol ,there are like 3 pathways or something right?
But decided i was a bit too far away!
I think maths would have been fine though..

Re: Geography/Geology Applications/Offers/Discussion 2010
Quote: : This was basicall my reasoning too, things like "the geography of fashion" sounded a bit suspect.
I'm kind of hoping to go down middle ground kind of route.
Which college are u going for at Durham?
For me it's Grey :D

Re: Geography/Geology Applications/Offers/Discussion 2010
Gender geographies (specifically feminist) is pretty integral to quite a lot of human geography.

Re: Geography/Geology Applications/Offers/Discussion 2010
Quote: : I've applied to Grey too!
On the Open Day it just seemed right for me, I really liked the atmosphere but Durham seemed a nice place overall.
The only college I saw which I didn't like St Mary's - the JCR was underground in some kind of dungeon.

Re: Geography/Geology Applications/Offers/Discussion 2010
Quote: : What a coincidence!
No special reason I picked it though, just kind of gave up trying to decide to be honest, there wasn't much in it.
I know I loved Durham, seemed pretty awesome  haa st mary's was the only one i got to go around too, u got taken straight there from geog dept- the basement gloom apsect definitely put me off- showed you a college NOT to apply to anyway!
