how did you learning english when you start learning English? - The Student Room

Re: how did you learning english when you start learning English?

I learned through three things: 1.

Travelling with my parents 2.

Watching television 3.

Playing computer games And then I improved my English by reading books in English since I was...

About 8. Not just Harry Potter...

I just started to read everything in English.

Still do, actually, to expand my vocabulary. English at school has been pretty much worthless.

Re: how did you learning english when you start learning English?

You cannot learn a language if you dont use it, or if you are not in that language environment sometimes, different people have different language ability, some are fast in picking up a language, some arent.

But i think generally, if you grow up in a non-english environment and cultivated a habit thinking in x (let x be any language), then its tough.

Cos you will try to translate everything to x and think in x, that way you are nvr going to learn english.

Of course there are exceptions, who are language geniuses maybe. you are not going to learn a language well if you treat it as an academic subject, its not maths or physics, there are no laws.

You maybe able to learn to write in english without grammar errors, given enough practice, but never able to make it part of you. so the best way to learn english is go to UK/US/Canada.

And learning a new language is never easy

Re: how did you learning english when you start learning English?

To learn a foreign language is like get a new soul.

I had english lessons at school for years, but never been able to "speak it" and normally nobody taking a language course at school does, even some ppl who completed their A2 in any specific language.

I can speak fluent english now cause I lived abroad and I was forced to, otherwise I would never do it.

Now I m trying to be fluent in french and is quite hard cause I have not change to go to a french speaking country at the moment but i still trying to keep practicing and working in it.Even if I take advanced french courses in the best language institute it isnt enough, I constantly read books, watch movies and i try to meet any native speaker in my home place. A further advice, a language is not only a language, it s attached to a whole different culture so it's important to get inside that culture as well.

Try always to read anything wrote in the original language you are interested to learn, avoid translations. In conclusion, Live the Language It takes long, but it will come

Re: how did you learning english when you start learning English?

I do not claim to know the best way of learning English but I can tell you what I'm doing. Of course I'm learning English at school, in detail, 2 hours and 15 minutes per week.

Anyway, I hate it because my English teacher believes to be a native English speaker but in actual fact, she often speaks German during the English lesson. Also it is important to read lots of books but more important is writing .

Write letters, write reports, write essays, write write write!

Unfortunately, I'm a great reader but not a great writer, so I'm trying to change that. Being home, I listen to the radio, BBC 4 - it is important what you are listing to!

For example: BBC 2 and BBC 4 are two completely different channels.

You should not waste your time listen to BBC 2 because you will often listen to the music on that channel.

Wachting TV/movies is not a good idea I guess. Finally, my partner is a Scot and living in Scotland, so we often speak via Skype.

That's what you should do too.

Speaking to people is the most important, I guess.

A hot tip, UK is not only London, and, London is not only UK, so you have to consider the speaking dialect in different areas.

Listening it s important to lean a language properly, specially english language.

Your ear needs to get use to the language by being constantly exposed to it.

So maybe you understand little from what u watch on TV/movies but u need to keep doing it.

I know that u will not always listen to "standard english" but also u will find a lot of dialect and slangs.

And this is great cause this is the way real native speakers will talk to u.

To me the best is to get DVD with a movie in english with the subtitles in english as well, never put the subs in your mother tongue.

So u can listen and read if u miss something.

So u can listen and read if u miss something. That's what I like too but there is one big issue I considered while writing 'Wachting TV/movies is not a good idea I guess.' Everyone knows that downloading movies (DVD) is illegal.

In contrast, BBC can be listened to from everywhere (digital) around the world for free.

That's why I have written that.

I often forget it when I want to write or when I meet it(i often forget how to spelling it) Well, sometimes u have to memorize some worlds u think are important for you obviously u cant memorize all.

Writing and Reading help a lot.

So here NoCommentMan is right about what he said, you need to write something and then check the mistakes with your teacher or your word's grammar check.

Then you have to focus on the spelling mistakes u did, try to write the worlds thousands times and probably you wont do the sames mistakes. Read novels or anything you want to and you will remember many words.

Don't forget that there is not logic for language, you rarely think about verbs or grammar when u speak, it's kind of "instinct" that comes by getting use to the lang.

Thank you very much indeed.

And now I start to try to read some english news and read the novel in english.

I'm download some news from bbs into my ipod so I can listen it at any where. I want to improve my poor english and I wish I will. thanx.

I often forget it when I want to write or when I meet it(i often forget how to spelling it) I admit I have a very convenient dictionary installed on my computer (Euroglot) which I use for synonyms.

(And the spelling of words like 'synonym'.)

Re: how did you learning english when you start learning English?

Reading the newspapers. And watching TV (*cough* friends *cough*)

Re: how did you learning english when you start learning English?

In the summer holidays or in your free time or whatever you just start to watch every season of every TV show you like in English. Scrubs, King of Queens, Friends, etc.

It's mostly American English, but you still learn a lot without having to study in the traditional way.

That's mostly for understanding English. And also reading books helps a lot, so basically just try to do everything in your in English.

Even change your telephone language to English, your computer, etc.

That all helps!

Re: how did you learning english when you start learning English?

I think the best way to learn English is to situate yourself in an English-speaking environment.

If that isn't possible, read a lot of books and watch a lot of TV shows and movies in English and pay attention to the language that they use.

For example, you could write down words that you don't understand from books down on a vocabulary book and write down their meanings next to it after you look them up in the dictionary.

Re: how did you learning english when you start learning English?

I don't study it any more.

Such a waste! but i have to speak it all day long due to some unchangable reasons. here's the advice for you: quit!

No use!

Re: how did you learning english when you start learning English?

1. at school for the bases 2.

Films and TV series 3.

Songs 4. English speaking forums 5.

Ultimately, spending a couple of years in Scotland greatly helped.

Now that I'm back home, I try and use English on a day to day basis by reading a lot of books in English, watching series without any subtitles, posting on English speaking forums, and using English when I think or talk to myself.

And I try and go to the UK as often as I can.
