Gap year traveling or in situ? - The Student Room

Gap year traveling or in situ?   I'm currently debating whether to take a project trust year and do a full year in one place or to take a backpacking ticket and do it independently, perhaps with the odd bit of voluntary work in different places (if the latter please advise on short voluntary projects) I'm torn between Asia and South America also, particularly Brazil or Peru, and Malaysia, Cambodia, China and Japan.

Re: Gap year traveling or in situ?   Quote: : Me and a friend are backpacking for 7 months with a months voulantry work at the end.

We start in India --->

Malaysia---> Thailand--->

Laos---> Vietnam----?

Cambodia---> Thailand---->

India (for voluntary work). I actually can't wait it is going to be amazing, we are going with project trust as my firned works for them and has been to india lots.

In terms of where to go, honestly all of those places would be amazing and I would love to go to south america, just look at scenery, food, temples etc all the stuff specific to a country, you will soon realise where you want to go.

Best of luck deciding and tell us where you are going. If you want an info about asia I have literaly loads :yep: Jonny

Re: Gap year traveling or in situ?   i've just gotten back from backpacking Thailand.

You can do lots of culturey stuff in the north, and there is an orphanage in chang mai that's really easy to get a place on.

You can usually just head up for the day without organising.

Then head south if you like and hop around the islands.

Ankh wat in cambodia is a sight to see, and tubing in laos.

Went for 6 weeks and spent 2 grand...

But that included the purchasing of many dresses and art pieces.

I love the diversity of the country and it's extremely chaotic and yet, strangely harmonious feel. Your backpacking tour sounds awesome!

I'm jealous ^^ What you are doing about having a months voluntary work sounds ideal, but I wondered, how are you able to do just a month?

On their website it says the minimum is 9 months, and that is why I'm slightly torn...

Re: Gap year traveling or in situ?   Thanks, I'll keep looking into it. Thailand sounds lovely but as does visiting a wide range of countries, how are you planning on traveling?

InterAsia flights, hitchhiking, buses, ferries? xx

Re: Gap year traveling or in situ?   Hey I´ve been travelling solo for the past 6 months now, and am currently in Peru.

I´ve been to Oz, Nz, Chile and Bolivia before now and am ending in Argentina. I volunteered for six weeks in Bolivia in two orphanages and lived at a home stay.

I organised it myself and you don´t have to pay to volunteer, just 5quid a night to live at the homestay.

Mama Vicky (mother at the home stay, an amazing woman) has been volunteering for years at the orphanage and can help you out.

I know of other placements in Peru that cost abit but are reasonable and work with street kids.

Usually they just ask that you commit a month.

Can you speak any spanish?

PM me if you want any more info!

I´d love to tell you all about it! I´ve had a wicked time xxx
