Suggested Reading for Geology - The Student Room
Suggested Reading for Geology
Hi,
I'm hoping to apply to study Geology at University in 2010 and have been trying to do some background reading.
I'm reading 'The Earth' by Richard Fortey at the moment and plan to read some of his other books;
I wondered if you could suggest any other books that might be of interest.
I don't do Geology at A-Level so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Becca :)

Re: Suggested Reading for Geology
You can try to find a mineral and rock guide and learn what some of the rocks and minerals you'll be looking at are.
Also, find something to swat up on the development of the earth and i'd suggest learning the geological timescale.
Like the person above said, geology's very diverse and you'd have to spend loads to get books to cover all the things you're going to learn.

Re: Suggested Reading for Geology
Hello!
I'm planning to do Geology as a NatSci unit at Cambridge, and I've been reading what was on their 'suggested reading' list:
- The Rough Guide to the Earth
- Life on a Young Planet
The first one is fascinating and quite a light read.
The second one is painstakingly boring, making me want to gouge my eyes out and play ping-pong with them.
Each to their own, however.

Re: Suggested Reading for Geology
Thanks for all your suggestions, I'll probably have a look for the Rough Guide to the Earth as a starting point :)
