Traveling by yourself - The Student Room

Traveling by yourself   I'm only 17 and I'm thinking about going abroad this summer.

My friends want to go to places like Magaluf etc.

Which I don't want to go.

Just wondering what traveling on your own is like and if anyone has done it?

I am a guy so not that worried about personal safety or anything more worried about being bored and lonely. I have about £1500 saved up and was planning on flying out to Budapest-Zagreb-Along the cost of Croatia-Mostar-Sarajevo-Belgrade-Skojee-Sofia-Varna-Constanta-Bucharest. Would spread out the cites a bit but don't know all that much about other cites apart from the capital.

Also the walled city in Croatian coast which looks amazing but forgot the name.

Planning on doing this by rail and wondering if this could be in my budget?

I am planning on staying in hostels and not spending much on food.

But also spending a decent amount on going out and drinking in these cities.

Would I be able to do this on my own in the budget with out getting lonely?

Re: Traveling by yourself   id do it with friends.

Not because of safety, just because i know id get bored.

Re: Traveling by yourself   depends how long you want to go for?? as for travelling on ur own, you will be FINE!...i dont know y people worry really...ive done it (im female) and u will meet loads of people...stayed in many a hostels in my time!

Which is a short time i will admit!

I am only 22! Lots of other people will be in the same boat and up for partying so wouldnt worry about being lonely - never been to budapest or croatia though so i cant offer much advice destination wise!

Don't let your friends hold you bakc, you'll never forgive yourself

Re: Traveling by yourself   Traveling alone is generally safe as long as you don't go looking for trouble i.e.

Walking alone late at night on an empty road, carry alot of expensive gadgets etc.

Re: Traveling by yourself   If you're going to travel alone, you should do so prepared for the possibility that you won't meet anyone.

Obviously a lot of people do, but equally there have been trips I've been on where I've not met a single person and spent most of my time alone, aside from tours where it's easy to chat to people. Not to rain on the parade, but the first time I travelled alone, I was disappointed to not have the amazing hostel experience everyone talks about.

On other trips I've met loads of people and had a great time!

But I'd recommend travelling to places you know you'll still enjoy on your own.

Or maybe going on gap year websites to find someone interested in going to some of the places you're planning.

Re: Traveling by yourself   Ah wow, that's pretty much the exact trip I was considering doing myself in September - though not with Budapest/Zagreb, but starting in Ljbuljana and also visiting Lake Bled.

Oh and plus Dubrovnik. As for travelling alone...I've never done it in Europe, but I can imagine it's much like I experienced in NZ/Australia/Asia - if you're approachable enough and willing to talk to anyone, then you'll meet people and hardly be alone at all :)

Re: Traveling by yourself   i was considering similar, but serbia and croatia were the places i wanted to sort of "base" myself from and travel out from there. there's a euro train thingy, eurail, where if you're travelling a lot it works out at good value.

You can use it in a ffew countries, or 17/18, on consecutive days, or say just 10 days within a certain time period.

Some journeys will work out cheaper to just pay for than use the pass for, so do a bit of research :) after reading about the issues of trains travelling from serbia to kosovo and back, i've pretty much decided to ditch a lot of the train travel.

Doooo read up on stuff like that, and how tourists have to report to police stations and stuff in some countries around that area.

Money sounds alright, some places are dirt cheap(belgrade's 10 euro a night hostels and one euro a pack cigs) but prices fluctuate a lot in other places between different areas and the different tourists they attract.

Re: Traveling by yourself   Do it.

Hostels are an amazing place for meeting people.

Places like Magaluf are tedious.

Re: Traveling by yourself   Quote: : That sounds brilliant.

My brother smokes so I would just sell them back to him at a premium lol. And yea it was Dubrovnik I was talking about.

Looks like a really nice city. I will probably be too scared to do that my own though.

Probably wait until I have a bit more experience traveling.

However if I can't get a job for the summer and I don't have anything else to do I will probably just go ahead and do it.

Thanks for the replies.

Anyone want to do it with me?

We could have a big Student Room holiday trip.

:D

Re: Traveling by yourself   I'm travelling alone this summer if all goes well.

I'm excited. Not really worried at the moment, because it'll be fine.

I just hope I do actually meet people, and don't end up sitting in bars on my own, fairly certain that won't happen though.

I mean it's Thailand, there are tons of backpackers.

Re: Traveling by yourself   I'm going to the States for three months on friday on my own, I'll let you know how it goes..

:S I'm 19 btw.

Re: Traveling by yourself   Going by your self on holiday is abit scary the first time i did, i was, i was 19, definatley stop in a hostel and look at reviews on different hostels to stop in to find one thats going to be most livley, stop in dorms you get to know people better that way.

It may seem abit tedious but organised pub crawls are a brilliant way to get to know people and theres always one going on wherever you go...have fun :)
