Biology, microbiology, cell biology...whats the difference? - The Student Room
Biology, microbiology, cell biology...whats the difference?
I intend on doing Biology as my degree at uni, but i dont want to do the enviromental side of it, which field of biology is best?
im most interested in the study of molecular cell biology, infection and immunity, evolution, genetics and human biology.
Whats the best course to take and which uni is best for it?
Thanks guys :)

Environmental Science, Microbiology in itself?

Re: Biology, microbiology, cell biology...whats the difference?
Biology is general and encompasses a wide range of things.
Microbiology is the study of bacteria and viruses.
Cell Biology is the study of cells, both prokaryote and eukaryote.
Microbiology and Cell Biology are likely to be too specialist for all that you want to do, so you're probably going to have to go down the Biology route.

Re: Biology, microbiology, cell biology...whats the difference?
The best course to take would be to study a general Biological Science degree which allows you to specialize in year 2 and 3, but you cover everything in year 1.
This way you can see what the difference between specialisations are and decide which one is for you.
Biology at degree level is totally different to biology at A level!
There are a number of unis that are good for biology - check league tables, but don't rely on them completely :)

Re: Biology, microbiology, cell biology...whats the difference?
I agree in taking a general Biology course, for the most part you'll have some free choice over modules so can specialise a bit into your areas of interest.
I've just graduated from York Uni with a BSc in Biology, and have a very different specialist area to others who have graduated with exactly the same degree title.
At York the first year is a foundation year where pretty much everyone has to study the core modules (Ecology, Biology and Biochemistry of the Cell, Genetics and Evolution, Microbiology, Developmental Biology, Plant/Animal Physiology and Anatomy plus lots of little extras like study skills and maths.
However after that you can pretty much get by avoiding any topic you don't like such as Developmental or Ecology because there's such a wide range to pick from.
I guess just have a look at any individual course to see how flexible you can be in your choices, and go for the ones that are best suited to you.

Re: Biology, microbiology, cell biology...whats the difference?
Judging from your interests, I think you should go for Biochemistry!
In a nutshell, it's the study of chemical reactions of bioolgical organisms and it forms the basis for many scientific(and sometimes other) fields such as physiology, immunology, medicine, genetics and many many more!
Doing a degree in biology would also be great, but if your strongest passion and interests lie in the more "chemical aspects" of biology(biochemistry stuff.=P), I think it'd be a good idea to study that at uni.
Afterall, you're not just limited to that area as biology and many other sciences are interlinked and there's no clear cuts/boundaries between the different disciplines!
So who knows, you can be studying biochemistry one day and then finding yourself discussing evolution and ecology the next day!
=D
Doing a biochemistry degree does not limit what you can do, you can go into almost anything ranging from research to business, from forensics to patent law!
=D

I'm exactly the same as you!
I've found the biological sciences course looks really great at leeds!
It's not a C100 course and it's basially biology without ecology and conservation and more genetics and things..
Have a look on their website!
