do all women have signs before they go into labour? - eNotAlone

Hi there i was just wondering if anyone knows if you can go into labour without having any signs previous? i am 6 days over my due date and have had nothing any of my friends that have children have said they either had a show, or back pain, dihorea, braxton hicks, urges to clean all of a sudden a few days before they gave birth. i am worried as my midwife thinks my baby will be at least a week late (1 more day) i dont know how she can tell this but she also said if my baby is not here by friday i will be induced and i really dont want that.

I just dont feel like my baby is anywhere near coming out because i have had no signs and i thought i would at least have had something by now. has anyone gone into labour all of a sudden without warning?

Or know if people do?

Is this your first child?

Do you have an ob/gyn?

Maybe your little one is nice and cozy in there and doesn't want to make his/her grand appearance just yet. It's been quite a long time since I have had any children but I do remember the urgency in cleaning everything around me. Are you sure that you are as far along as you think you are?

Was your due date confirmed through ultra sound?

Thanks for your replies, this is my first baby, i have been seeing my midwife every 2 weeks but dont see anyone else but she told me there will be a doctor present on the maternity ward at the hospital but a midwife with me all the time so it seems like the midwifes do all the work, im not sure if thats right? i had a scan very early o in my pregnancy when i was living abroad at around 9 weeks 4 days which gave me a due date of the 20th of october and another when i returned to the uk (the one which they are using the due date from) which is the 19th of october, the second scan was at 26 weeks and a few days but because the dates were very close they would go by the date of the second scan, they measured his arms and legs in the picture and said this would give thm the most accurate date they could get. im starting to worry lol it does seem like he doesnt want to come out!

I only have one child - but yes I did feel signs - a few days before, much stronger pelvic pressure and yes the urge to get things done/clean, etc.

The day I went into labor - started with period-like cramps including lower back about every 40 minutes, increased in intensity/got more often/more regular (although not too regular - not every five minutes, more like every 12 then 3, then 7, etc) and I had the show about 8 hours after that all started.

My water leaked I believe as I walked into the hospital, but I don't think it ever broke, but by the time I got to the hospital (about 12-14 hours after the first signs) I was 5-6 centimeters dialated. I haven't heard about "no" signs at all but I wouldn't worry - first babies I hear are usually late and several friends have been induced - not pleasant but you will be ok and just focus on the huge prize.

I wish you all the best, little pain and a speedy recovery.

I was the same, I got this sudden urge to clean everything, A few hours later and after all this housework, I was a 'mommy' Also like Batya, stronger pelvic pressure, it was much harder to walk. I think we are all in tune with our own bodies and we know when something 'different' is happening that we havn't experienced before. Another sign of the onset of labour, is you lose what is known as a 'show' in the UK.

It's a plug of mucus like jelly that comes away from the opening of the cervix....and indicates that your cervix is starting to dilate.

I had an induction with my second child. for me it was no different to the other births. no more or less pain. a lot of people seem to be worried about being induced. i havent meet anyone who thought it as terrible as they imagined. i cant remember any evidence to show i was about to go into labour. i woke up in the middle of the night with the other two pregnancies and all went smoothly. i wish you and baby well.

Signs... well, about 2 weeks before my son was born, I was on my hands and knees with a toothbrush scrubbing the grout in the tiles...

But that could be chalked up to standard nesting behaviour. I never had the cramping, or pelvic pressure though...

I woke up one night at 4am, stood to go to the bathroom, and my water broke That's the only warning I had My daughter was 3 weeks late, and if there were any signs, I didn't notice them as I was getting mighty irritated at having a child staying well past checkout time.

Thank you for all the replies my midwife did warn me everyone is different i was just getting was just getting worried because everyone i know has had something happen previous the nesting seems to be pretty common my mum has children and says shes felt the urge to clean everytime! trezz its good to hear you didnt think indction was bad, thats what im most afraid of ive read on the internet that some people think its more painful and im terrified because doesnt it increase your chances of having to have a c-section?

I don't exactly remember, but I don't think I was having labor signs at 5 days over.

My daughter finally came 11 days past my due date (no induction) and we were all healthy and fine. Unless they have a specific reason for inducing you, I would ask to wait until about 10-14 days over, just depending on how long you're willing to wait. Most first babies are late and your situation sounds completely normal.
