s/o of backpack thread... - DFW Area Moms
So Bridget and I are in disagreement about this (surprise, surprise LOL)
I want to pick out a nice and well made backpack for Ava - I would love one that is personalized and has a matching lunch box, like PB Kids style.
I would let her pick out which she liked the best re: colors, etc.
I don't want characters because I want a nice one that will last her at least a couple of years.
Bridget thinks she should get any kind she wants, Tinkerbell, Princesses, whatever.
It is her choice and she should get what she likes.
I get that but I hate character stuff!!
What do you think?
And yes, I know it is not that big a deal.
I will end up choosing what I want anyway LOL!!

I'm on your side.
No advice more though!

I am on Bridget's side.
I let the girls buy a new backpack every year because I store their school year works (art, reports, teacher notes) in the backpack they wore for that school year.
Other memento for me and them when they get older

I'm with you too.
My kids have charactor stuff, but it's all stuff I don't care if they out grow.
Like their rooms are not done in charactors because I want them to last longer.
Maybe make the point that she might outgrow that charactor next year and it makes more sense to buy a backpack that will last past yer 5 year old tastes.

I can see both sides because I know in some families the children are allowed to pick their own, new bag every year as part of the "back to school" tradition.
However, I am a very practical person and so if the decision were mine alone, I'd go your route - why not choose something that is more durable and will last a little longer than this year's favorite character trend?
I'm sure she'll have a terrific year no matter what you decide!

That's a tough one.
I guess to me it would depend on how strongly Ava felt about getting a character backpack.
I don't like the character stuff either BUT if it meant a lot to my baby, no harm in it.
I'd let her have what she wants.
If she hasn't been expressing an interest, I'd offer a choice of colors among the ones I picked & be done with it.

We get a bew backpack each year and store that years momentos in it in a tub.
I try HARD to steer her towards the non-char stuff, but it apparently is a big status symbol.

I'd talk up the cool personalized backpack to Ava and get her wanting that kind.
Even now, Natalie knows we don't buy things with characters on them - except we do actually have some panties that have characters.
She will see things with characters on it and say, "Mommy, that's got Cinderella on it.
It's kind of ugly."
Maybe she can pick a character backpack to tote things to and from Bridget's place...

They grow out of the character stuff by second grade (or mine did).
Ian likes camo and Lauren likes florals.
They had character backpacks for K.
How does Ava feel about it?
Does she care?

Each of you get her one.
You get the nice one you want for her to use at school.
B can get her the one she wants for her to schlepp her stuff to and from during visitations!

I let them pick whatever they want.
Like Julia said they grow out of the character things so quickly and then it really isn't an issue anymore.
I figure why not let them have something they really enjoy for awhile.
Like all things in life these times go by so quickly and before you know it you have a high schooler like I'm getting ready to have (holy cow...it's still hard to say, he will be in high school.
LOL)

Get both! Then, just let her pick which one she wants to use each day.
She'll eventually use the good one anyway.

Does she care? you know what?
I am going to let her decide all on her own
I will show her the ones I like too but she can decide what will make her happy carrying to school

If Ava really wants the character, you can always let her pick out character key chains to decorate the back pack you want her to have.
I agree with you too, no character stuff here, it seems so cheap and won't last.

I'm on your side then again my kids don't care what I pick.
I get more excited about this then they do
