NETGEAR ReadyNAS • View topic - EVA8000 and ReadyNAS
The EVA8000 works with any NAS device, but has special features which make it work even better with ReadyNAS, and more on the way.
The EVA8000 access media files directly through SMB file sharing.
It scans all shares you select and creates a Media Library which you can browse on TV without any network or NAS access.
The EVA8000 plays all the media types it supports directly with no requirement for any support from the server for transcoding or UI Support or metadata.
Unlike any other Media Player:
You get NATIVE (no server required) full support for DVD playback
You can create audio playlists on the fly
You can rotate and zoom photos and play any photos with any music
You can access the full UI while any media is playing
You can combine local photos and internet music (and vice versa)
You can zoom video infinitely to get rid of any "black bars" (my favorite feature)
Feture highlights
YouTube, Flickr, Internet radio, weather, multi-room with audio sync, auto ReadyNAS RaidAR built-in
The EVA supports the following media formats:
Video Codecs: MPEG 1/2/4 SD;
MPEG-2 HD HP@HL to 1080p (max 22Mbps);
MPEG-4 Part 2 HP@HL to 1080p (max 10Mbps in .MP4 / Xvid and 20Mbps in TS);
AVC/H.264 HP@HL 4.1, VC1/WMV9HD to 1080p (max 15 Mbps)
Video file formats: AVI, DivX, Xvid, WMV, MOV, M4V, VOB, MPG, MP1, MP2, MP4, ISO, IFO, MKV
Audio formats: MP1/2/3, WMA, WMA-Pro, AAC, AC3, FLAC, AIFF, WAV, PCM, DTS passthrough
Photo formats: JPG, BMP, TIFF, PNG
Playlist formats: PLS, M3U, WPL, ASX, WAX, WVX, RMP
Tag formats: ID3 v1, ID3 v2, WMA, WMV, AVI, DivX, Xvid, FLAC, EXIF, MOV, M4A, M4P, M4V, MKV, ISO
For those of you not familiar with MPEG lingo MP4 part 2 = standard MP4 and MP4 part 10 is often called H.264 or AVC
Let me know if I can answer any questions.

I know it supports SD DVD isos, but does it support HD-DVD or Blu-ray DVD isos natively?

No, it does not support HD-DVD or BluRay natively.
However, BRD files are natively 30GB.
I've successfully transcoded them to H.264 at 8Mbps so a 30GB file shrinks to about 9GB and it plays beautifully.
Even on very careful examination in Slo-Mo I can't tell the difference between that and the original on PS3.

OK, here are a couple of questions.
I have the previous generation sybas, Buffalo DVD-wifi, which I'm pretty happy with, used in conjunction with Wizd.
I don't use music or photo streaming, just video, however x.264 support will become an issue someday.
Where is Netgear in the support life cycle?
It looks like Linksys and the others have given up mostly in this area, is there a new Netgear device on the horizon?
I'm asking, has there been any commitment to a period of firmware updates?
I'm lumping these questions as they're all the same issue to me.
On the fly scanning of directories.
This is one of the greatest strengths of Wizd, is you can put a file in there and 1 second after you copy you can see it, does the EVA cache or does it refresh every time?
Minor issue: Does info (overlay info screen showing video properties during playback) tell the total duration of the file and how much has elapsed?
My Tvisto did this, but the Buffalo doesn't.
Photo playback.
I've been interested in this on devices, but the readynas doesn't have the horses to rotate images from EXIF info, and I don't want to resave them.
Can the EVA 8000 rotate images on the fly based on exif info reading them from directories?
UI.
The UI seems to be a sore point in reviews, what's the best source of seeing the UI in action?
Thanks, this has been enlightening!

I can probably get a quick video recording of some of the UI this weekend.
I don't use all the features of the EVA, but should be able to cover enough to get an idea of how interaction with the system is.
(You might need to give me a reminder nudge to do this, I will forget)

Curious, how did you convert/transcode BRD to H.264???
That sounds very awesome as I am looking to take the plunge from my DVD world to a PS3 Plasma world.
I have an extensive video library on my ReadyNas (ReadyNas that I LOVE!) currently but after I take on the PS3 and Plasma I'd like to expand to BRD and transcoding to H.264 sounds awesome.
The EVA8000 sounds great especially with my current frustration with the setup I'm running right now.
ReadyNas_MB200(PixelMagic)_TV ...
Any transcoding details/howto/software, etc would be greatly appreciated

Well you aren't really transcoding the BluRay to H.264, because most BluRay discs store the video in H.264 (AVC).
What most people do is demux the lossless audio and downmix it to ac3 or dts, then mux it back with the H.264 stream in a MKV file or MP4.

Hello SW&Chirpa,
I want eva8k to ONLY look at my movies in media/videos, is it possible or should I move my movies outside the /media/videos subdirectory structure (i have many mp3 that i dont want the eva8k to find nor play in /media/music)?
I use 401b1p3t6 and eva8000_v2166.
Thanks for any help/advise.

Can anyone tell me whether the EVA8000 can access the readynas directly without a PC switched on?

Yes, the EVA can access the ReadyNAS perfectly fine without a PC running.
The only time you need the PC running is if you want to watch Youtube videos or if you're using the EVA to schedule a recording on your PC (your PC would need a supported TV/Video card as well).
I was using my EVA and ReadyNAS for a few weeks before I even installed the software on my PC.
If you haven't already, you may also want to join the forums here:
http://forum1.netgear.com/forumdisplay.php?f=85
I would also suggest that you sign up for the beta program to get the latest firmware versions.
Some of the more recent updates have incorporated things such as RSS readers and support for other file formats (including .ISO and matroska).
