OTTAWA -- After steering clear of food packaging containing bisphenol A for a couple of days, Rick Smith saw the levels of the hormone-disrupting chemical linked to breast and prostate cancer in his body increase 7.5 times after just two days of restricting his diet to canned foods heated in a microwave using a polycarbonate plastic container.
The BPA test, showing an "immediate and dramatic increase" in the "harmful toxin," was one of four involving pollutants found in consumer products unveiled Sunday, showing an increase in levels of up to 2,900 times after short-term, regular-use exposure.
The results are contained in the new release of the Canadian book Slow Death by Rubber Duck: How the Toxic Chemistry of Everyday Life Affects our Health.
"The results are staggering.
Obviously, we suspected we'd see an increase but nowhere near that much, especially given that we were only doing this over a couple of days.
I can only imagine what levels of these chemicals look like in people that use these products as a matter of course because all the products we were experimenting with are well-known, brand-name, off-the-shelf products," Smith, co-author of the book and executive director of Environmental Defence, said in an interview.
Along with co-author Bruce Lourie, the two detoxed by abstaining from everyday consumer products known to contain pollutants, then loaded up on the common, brand-name products in order to measure the effect on their bodies.
After using everyday scented toiletries containing phthalates for just two days following a shower-free weekend, and hanging out in a condominium set up for the experience with an air freshener that also contained the chemical, the levels in Smith's body increased by as much as 22 times.
Phthalates, also found in many hard plastic toys, have been linked to abnormal reproductive development.
And Smith, who had banished triclosan from his home many years ago after reading studies identifying the antibacterial agent as a carcinogen and reproductive toxin, saw the levels rise in his body by a "mind-blowing" 2,900 times after using, over a two-day period, brand-name deodorant, toothpaste, anti-bacterial soap and shaving cream containing triclosan.
In the case of mercury, a known neurotoxin harmful to children's development, Lourie, who is chairman of the board of directors for Environmental Defence, reduced his exposure to the element by not eating fish for a month.
Then, over a two-day period, Lourie ate tuna sandwiches for lunch and tuna sushi or tuna steak for dinner.
The levels of mercury in Lourie's blood increased by 2.5 times after eating those four tuna meals over two days.
The experiments show that, "our choices as consumers really do have a profound, and very rapid, effect on the pollution levels in our bodies," according to the authors.
But there is some good news, they write.
"If we could crank up our levels of these things in a couple of days, anybody can reduce their levels and their children's levels of these and other chemicals in a similarly quick fashion simply by making different purchasing choices at the supermarket."
Trade organizations representing the chemical industry and manufacturers of products containing these chemical insist that the levels found consumers products pose no health risk to their customers.
Smith said these groups "should not be trusted" on this point.
"Literally, on a weekly basis, there's another new major scientific study drawing another conclusive link between the chemicals that we tested for and very significant human health problems."
Besides, said Smith, people are not exposed to these chemicals on a one-off basis.
"It's a fallacy to think that each one of these chemicals should be looked at in insolation and the only thing that matters is the level of a particular chemical as one moment in time.
The problem is we're being exposed to all these chemicals every hour of every day, year in, year out," said Smith.
But the "second conclusion" flowing from the experiment "is that no matter how hard you try, no matter how obsessively you're focused, even making the elimination of toxic chemicals from your body the single purpose of your day, you can't succeed completely.
The toxins are too widespread.
The sources of contamination are so numerous that no precaution taken by an individual will work completely."
For example, despite banishing anti-bacterial and personal care products containing triclosan from his home for a number of years, the levels of triclosan in Smith's urine stood 2.47 nanograms per millilitre before exposure;
They rose to 7,180 ng/mL after exposure over a two-year period using everyday personal-care products.

Yep.
Fact is, this stuff is slipped into so many things that people neglect to look at.
Can linings are just one example.
The FDA allowed such introductions into the food supply based soley upon the levels required to poison someone, not address levels of chemicals that can have great influence at low levels over long periods of time- BUT when it comes to your vitamins, and other supplements, the FDA is considering adopting the UN Codex Alimentarius.
Which requires a doctor's prescription for anything that might have an effect in the body, and relegate totover the counter only those tiems and concentrations that have no effect.
In other words, your Vitamin C tabs would be limited to about 25 milligrams maximum for example.
What is clear is those who are majority owners of these companies want you and I dead.
Low intensity, low yield slow kill methods abound.
All is not lost however.
If you have the desire- grow your own food following true organic guidelines as established by the Oregon Tilth, educate yourself where the pthalates and polysulphones are in use, and eliminate as much of that use as possible.
This also means for many to avoid artifical sweeteners due to their own toxicities.
It makes many dieters upset, but the reality is this- you drink a diet soda, you may as well inject some free chlorine molecules into your bloodstream, or Methanol and Formaldehyde.
Stevia is a good healthful substitute, as is Agave nectar- they have low glycemic index.
The key is making the decision to avoid the plasticizers and other chemicals.
And learning where they are in use and find suitable alternatives.

Notice how the actual concentration and how close the amount comes to reasonable toxic limits isn't mentioned.
Much less some discussion of what constitutes a consequential, versus inconsequential, dose.
We live in a chemical world.
Start to test things at a parts per trillion level and your going to find trace amounts of all sorts of things.
Many of them coming from entirely natural sources.
Many fruit seeds contain a compounds which you body metabolizes into cyanide.
Deadly poison cyanide.
But in small doses the liver consumes, neutralizes and spits it out.
Neutralizing poisons is a big part of what the liver does and you would need to eat a lot of fruit seeds to show any effect.
It is all about dose, susceptibility, duration, and how well your body is able to handle it.
Two common poisons are naturally found in potatoes, solanine and chaconine.
Most people get regular doses throughout their lives.
You would have to eat a huge amount of your average potatoes to show any toxic effect.
Again, it is all about how much you take on board, how often, how long the stuff stays in you, and how effective your body is at handling it.
Dose makes the toxin.
Of course some things are both toxins and nutrients.
Look at cobalt. It isn't really all that toxic as far as metals go.
But there is a toxic dose.
If you get too much you get sick.
On the other hand cobalt is the metallic atom that forms the center of the vitamin B-12.
If you don't get enough B-12 you get sick and die.
B-12 deficiency is sometimes, incorrectly, called cobalt deficiency.
Incorrectly because you can't correct a B-12 deficiency by chugging down some cobalt.
There is also a lot of confusion about inside versus outside our bodies.
Your body naturally produces a huge number of toxins including: ammonia, formaldehyde, nitric and hydrochloric acids, urea, detergents and corrosive enzymes.
Your stomach produces a steady supply of .6 molar hydrochloric acid and without it you would be very sick.
Human blood and sweat are corrosive to many common metals.
Don't freak out. The human body has evolved to produce, use, moderate and protect itself from its own chemistry.
It is also highly evolved to deal with many environmental poisons.
When someone raises alarms about 'chemicals' and 'toxins' look dispassionately into the known chemistry and relative and absolute toxicity.
Remember that dose and frequency make a big difference.
For all the claims of potential problems with phthalate exposure the threat remains theoretical, at best.
The same can be said for BHA.
The actual risk, if there is any , remains undefined.
Now if these sorts of issues concern you then you might look around for replacements.
But, as with all things, your often trading one risk for another.
You could replace your BHA containing plastic water bottle with aluminum.
But a few years back there were some preliminary studies that seemed to link aluminum with Alzheimer's disease.
Later studies show no such link but, then again, you never know.
You might go for stainless but some Chinese and Italian stainless leaches lead and/or nickel.
You might go for glass, if you don't mind the risk of having it shatter when you fall and slitting your throat.
Even worrying about it raises your blood pressure and increases your risk for kidney damage.
In the end everyone dies.
I think the best anyone can do is staying aware by following reputable sources, make reasonable choices, don't make decisions based on incomplete or preliminary testing, realize that the best anyone can do is to manage risk.
You can't ever eliminate it.
Sometimes all you can do is , literally, chose your poison.
We live in a chemical world and most every compound and chemical, natural or man-made, is or can be poisonous at some level of exposure.

Spoken like true Dupont or BASF, or other chemical company lobbyist.
Of course hooter misses the point of the article, he never reads for understanding, he just merely wants to agitate in areas where honest discussions that rail against the "conventional wisdom," or put government agencies in a bad light.
His sole goal is to disinform, and obfuscate the discussions like a true paid professional web bot.
The real issue is that most people are unaware of the extent of the chemical contaminants reach.
The real issue is that many chemicals in everyday use are products of a failed previous intended use.
Among the more widely used products is Poly Sulfone (not sure of spelling at the moment)- Originaly developed for Estrogen Replacement in the 1930's.
It IS an Endocrine disruptor.
It ismore commonly known by the brand name "polycarbonate." Those chemicals will find uses in the oddest places, and most people pay them no mind.
Hooter can scoff, but his enlarged prostate and high Prostaglandin hormone PSA test results is often the result of years of exposure for men.
IN children, females enter puberty earlier, and in males, sperm counts are reduced as well as overall fertillity, and the incidence of endocrine related tumors is higher.
And much of what is allowed into the US food stream is NOT allowed into european food stuffs- this should be a tip off to a problem systemic with the FDA.
Note hooter never supports his assertions with reliable source materials.
But all anyone needs to do is some of their own research on "Endocrine Disrupters" and they will clearly see hooter is full of something flatual- and it aint factual.
we can always count on hooters flatulence when it comes to real develping health matters.
Just because the US food industry adopted something does not make it automatically safe, and it does not mean it is the best choice- there are other options.

What this means is people need to do their own research because hooter relies on incomplete or compromised sources.
The assumption that studies that have been conducted were incomplete is a flat out lie- presented by those who do not want the truth known.
The incomplete studies are often FROM the various drug and chemical companies themselves, I suggest people read about an example of that in "Seeds of Deception."
It should be common knowledge that in Europe, many of the chemicals in use int he USA are not in use or are banned in the EU.
BHA and BHT are perfect examples.
But Zipr's article is dead on, while hooter's is dead wrong.
