Lock Picking 101 • View topic - Legality question...or questionable legality
So I'm sure this has been brought up before....but I'm curious
Most lockpick tool sites say that the person buying the product must be able to provide some proof that they are pro locksmiths, repo men, law enforcement, etc.
I have only found one site that specifically states that they will also sell to homeowners.
I've never bought picks online;
It's always been through some other source and thus has legality has never been much of an issue.
So what I'm wondering about, are all of us amateur lockpickers legally screwed?
Or are they really going to make a huge deal about it if someone outside that category buys their product?
I know for a fact it isn't illegal to own a set of lockpicks so long as there is no illegal intent or use of them.
So it really shouldn't be an issue right?

Not for nothing, but this is a pretty common question around these parts.
Most of us just tell you to make sure it's ok to own lockpicks in your own community.
The site owners are simply trying to cover their own butts.
Be responsible with your tools and go ahead with the purchase, you won't have any problem.

I've bought picks online and mail order never has anyone asked for any proof that I'm a locksmith, though I have seen that in other catalogs - which I didn't order from.
Most of what I've seen is an agreement that all liability passes to the buyer, and it's the buyer's responsibility to make sure the picks aren't used for nefarious purposes.
That's the way it should be really, it's like firearms.
Full responsibility is in the hands of the end-user, not the supplier or the manufacturer.
