Professional Image Makeover: Fingernails - OptiBoard Discussion Forums
Hello,
I am going to be moving soon, and will have to get another job.
I've been evaluating myself on my job performance and my professional image, seeing what I can change/modify.
I dress nicely, my hair is long but always braided/banded/under control, I use modest makeup...
It's my finger nails.
They are clean and I keep them filed, but I am unable to get them to look like traditional women's fingernails do: beautifully manicured.
I've been told the only way I can have that look is to go the route of fake fingernails.
I don't think this would be a good idea at work due to handling tiny screws, and if I need to take a cl out of a pt's eye.
Do you think that slightly "mannish" fingernails that are clean and filed would be ok?
Any advice or imput to my strange question is greatly appreciated

There are some things you just can't change about yourself.
If others don't like it that is their problem.
Diet can affect the colour, thickness, and brittleness of fingernails.
As long as you're eating healthy then I guess that is just how your nails look.
Lately it seems the omega-3 fatty acids fix everything from dry eyes to flat tires, so a supplement may be worth a try.

Prenatal vitamins work well.
My hands and my nails all bear the indications that I use a lot of chemicals and stuff with them.
I did try using the acrylic nails, but hated not being able to _feel_ with them.
I had a harder time grasping and being able to judge pressure.
Especially with contacts and nosepad screws...
If they are clean and filed..
I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I was thinking about prenatal vitamins, even though I am not, and am not going to be, pregnant.
I hear they do a lot for nails and hair, too....
It doesn't hurt to try.
I wouldn't wear them very long anyway becuase if they were to be really long, they'd be a hassle.
I know it's a wierd question.
Thanks for taking the time to answer...

I have learned to live with "mannish" fingernails.
I figure that as long as I keep them clean, nobody shoud have any complaints.

Where you are moving to can also have a bearing on a a "makeover".
People in different parts of the country look for and expect different things.

A good manicure done by a good manicurist will help keep your nails healthy and attractive, much as a good hairdresser does for your hair.
A good manicure doesn't require artificial nails.
I've gone back to acrylic nails, but keep them short, no more than a 1/4 inch beyond my fingertips, and squared off.
I've used acrylics while dispensing with no adverse consequences.

Oh vanity, thy name is woman.

Myself, I just try to occasionally get the paint, dirt, grinding compound, etc.
Out from under them occasionally.
Back when I had hair, I did occasionally comb it.
Remember reading in a readers digest where a woman was criticised for her nails at a social gathering.
Her friend asked: "What have you been doing with your hands?
She replied: "Using them."

While I can appreciate you hard working guys, vanity is not the only reason for nice clean hands and nails.
Dispensing and adjusting eyewear requires that our hands are in close proximity to our customers faces.
I'm betting that most customers would prefer that those hands and nails be clean and neat.

Wow. I didn't expect such a reaction to my query.
I'm happy that anyone has answered, let alone so many replies.
yes, I am a woman.
I will be moving to the Chicago area.
It's not really about vanity.
Like someone said, my hands are always on display, and I want to have my nails look nice like the rest of me.

OOHH! Now I get it!
Really, your hands look fine to me...
Chip,
I was just kidding about putting up with mannish hands.
Actually, I have Neanderthal looking hands (the knuckles are all roughed up from dragging on the ground.)

We're probably going to be in the Wicker Park area.
The only apprehension I have about Chicago is the traffic situation.
From what I gather, it's an issue of confidence and acting quickly.
Here, a driver will put thier turn signal on...think about it, mosey on over, ride the line, and maybe end up in the intended lane.
Very, uh, "leisurely".
I will be using mass transit/walking/riding as much as I can, but I know I'll probably have to drive somewhat.
Aside from maniacal taxis, it seems like an adaption issue.
My next foray in that area is to midwest vision congress, in rosemont.
According the google maps, it seems pretty easy to get to.
I'm going to take my advanced abo ( again ).
Any advice/comments/ ect.
About Chicago would be great.
Most of what I read online is stuff like "don't go here, avoid it, people are rude", but if it sucked that badly, it wouldn't be the city it is, with people moving there and visiting there daily.

As far as driving goes just close your eyes and press on the gas!!
As far as the bad areas go most are really not that bad.
You can have on one side of the road abandoned buildings, shady people and on the other side are luxury condos!
I'll be seeing you at the expo for the advanced test and I'm pretty sure that Ziggy may be popping in for that one.
Also foureyes aka whvisionlaurie will be moving near me and may be taking the advaced test as well.
If you have any questions about the area just pm me
