"In the medium term, the UK's joint helicopter command is already planning the replacement of this airframe," it said.
Good skills from the pilots, it's good no one was hurt.
Shame about the chopper though.

I hope the bean counters at the MoD will look into replacing it.
The italian are firing a production line up to start building new version chinooks for the european market.

Are they allowed to sell in Europe ?
Its just that I've never heard of Augusta selling one in Europe outside of Italy.

They (Meridionali now Agusta ?) sold some to Libya or Egypt (?) back in the Eighties.
Agusta is part of Agusta Westland so they would/could/should be built at Yeovil.

Is there really no way to recover a Chinook?
(apart from driving a truck down to pick it up)
You couldn't strip it down to the bare essentials and have another Chinook airlift it out?
(perhaps too much work)
Or maybe it was a complete right off and not worth any salvaging effort.

You can recover via a Mil-26 - after you've stripped off the blades etc.
However, if the tactical situation is that you cannot protect the blokes prepping it for airlift, you'd have to destroy it.
That or if its a cat 5 write off.
I was thinking of elements of the nav system and ECM gear that could be stripped out ( if anything only for spares ) plus and any weaponry/ammo.
It would be sh*t if anything survived to be of use against us.

Helicopters being what they are, they do suffer from accidents, engineering problems or sometimes succumb to enemy action.
I once saw a Sioux Helicopter which had hit an electricity cable being airlifted by a Puma.
It was a bit of a sight seeing the biggy carting the little one away.
Obviously a completely different set of parameters here, the Sioux being a small 2 seater and the Puma being considerably larger.
I would assume that the Chinook is simply too heavy to be airlifted and a land recovery just wasn't operationally viable.
Still a great shame to lose it and, given the existing Helicopter shortage, it's bound to cause some problems.
Just fingers massively crossed nobody is hurt or worse because of this one is gone.

The Chinook is built under license by Agustawestland in Italy and Kawasaki in Japan .
Agustawestland sold CH's to Greece,Spain,Egypt and some to Saudi Arabia .

The helicopter was later deliberately destroyed by a coalition airstrike to deny it to enemy forces.
Lt Col Nick Richardson said: "It is a measure of the bravery and skill of the pilots that, operating under enemy fire, they were able to complete their task and calmly move to safety.
"Their cool under pressure has ensured that their lives were saved and minimal damage was caused.
Despite the loss of one aircraft, the brave crew have thwarted insurgents attempts to destabilise the elections with a shocking spectacular loss of British life."
The exact cause of the incident is still under investigation and enemy action has not yet been ruled out.
In the very short term other UK aircraft in Regional Command (South) and those operated by our NATO partners will be able to cover the helicopter lift requirement.
As part of the routine programme to sustain our Chinook fleet in Afghanistan, an additional Chinook had already arrived in theatre.

Few months/years back one that had a rotor damaged by an RPG was lifted out by another chinook.
The mighty wokka is the only helo in the world that can lift itself, fully constructed etc, no need to strip it of rotors, guns etc to reduce weight.
I assume time/enemy action meant there was no chance to do this.
I love that my boss is a wokka pilot
