Best technique to use during labour? - MotheringDotCommunity Forums

I'm just wondering if those of you with experience can recommend a good technique to use during labour?

(bradley, hypnobabies, etc) I asked my doc and he said there was no real difference and he doesn't really think it matters... What do you ladies think?

In all honesty, I don't think there is one *best*, but many good techniques.

The most important factor being what works for you.

Sometimes a mom spends much of her pregnancy preparing a certain way only to throw it all out the window once she goes into labor and just acts intuitively.

Other ppl really thrive using a prepared technique like hypnobabies. What I do with my clients during pre-natal counseling and preparations is to assist them in exploring their own preferences so they show up to birth intuitively connected to their own birthing preferences and that of their child.

Homebirth but probably not what you're getting at. I didn't use any one technique, but I feel strongly that my labors were only tolerable due to the fact I was in my own space. -Angela

Honestly, I don't know that any ONE technique is the best for every mama.

I studied Bradley with my first, and took a prenatal yoga class that dealt with coping in labor.

I think I handled it fairly well [got to pushing, but baby got stuck and ended up in the OR ].

DH didn't get much out of Bradley though, and wasn't a good "coach".

I've had to just accept that this isn't his intended role. This time I've been doing the Hypnobabies home study course.

I've also been reading Birthing From Within [a completely different approach], and I'll probably review Bradley.

I've also been taking the same yoga class, and taking it much more seriously this time.

I expect I will use a mix of these techniques to get me through my VBAC. My best advice is to research them, and find out which one[s] fit your personality best. Happy birthing, mama!

(especially if you've never done it before?)

(especially if you've never done it before?) Well, I like to think of it as "inner work";

Taking the time to build a relationship with your intuitive self.

In our modern, fast paced society it is easy to find ourselves disconnected, but you have it mama, it's in your knowing.

You already know how to give birth even though intellectually you don't know how to wrap your head around it. With my first birth I had no idea what to expect and even though I prepared I found myself completely unprepared.

It was so scary to "let go" and let my body and my intuitive mama give birth.

My intellectual mind held on for so long.

I think some women are really good at just being mammals at birth and for others (like me) it is hard to let go of my thinking mind.

I had to peel the layers away one by one during labor. That got me thinking for my 2nd pregnancy.

What if I peeled those layers off before going into labor?

What if I practiced getting into that intuitive, birthing space before birth?

I did this and went on to have fantastic, shorter, and very enjoyable birth experience. feel free to pm me if you want to chat about this more.

I think it's whatever technique resonates with you.

I'd head over to the bookstore, or borrow a bunch of books on different classes and see what seems right. With our first, Bradley was what our mw recommended.

Nice, but it didn't do it for me (I was completely unprepared mentally and coping technique wise for back labor).

Hypnobirthing isn't my thing.

Birthing from Within really was an incredible revelation for me, and I totally recommend at least picking up a copy. I think it also may depend on where you're planning to birth.

I've only homebirthed, but I think if hospital was my preference, I might prepare (and view labor) differently.
