Expedited US passport needed for a visa: please advise - FlyerTalk Forums
Ok,
I applied for a 2 year UK work visa.
This morning I went and got my biometrics done and per UK visa requirement I need to send supporting documentation including my passport within the next 14 days.
I just realized this afternoon that my passport does not have any visa pages left in it.
It expires in June, 2011.
Instead of requesting expedited visa pages to be added I might as well pay up and get an rewenwed passport because my 2 year work visa is going to last longer than 2 years anyhow.
I set an appointment up in the Passport processing office in Boston tomorrow morning however the guy setting the appointment up says I may not get processed because I do not have travel within next 14 days.
I do have a paper from my UK biometrics appointment which says my documents must be sent within next 14 days otherwise they are invalid.
Does anyone have any experience with in person processing at the regional passport center when travel is not in question but a visa is?
Will my paper and UK visa application be sufficient evidence for a new passport?
What is the turnaround time if they do process it?
Thanks,
|

Book a fully refundable international plane ticket within a few days of your passport appointment as "proof" of your travel needs in the short-term.
As soon as you get your expedited passport, cancel the travel with no penalties

I wonder if a print-out showing an held AA itinerary would suffice as "proof" of an upcoming flight?

Scheduled an appointment, went in at 9:30am, waited 35 minutes, passport will be ready on Friday.
Boston Passport office staff were very courteous and efficient.

You may want to apply for a second passport since you travel a lot.
Not many people know you can do that.

I don't think it is very easy to do that.
At least in the US.
The state department will have all kinds of questions and require proof that you travel to a lot of different countries requiring visas (that results in your passport being held up at some consulate).
I forgot to ask Israeli immigration not to stamp my passport when I entered Israel (I was exhausted and groggy and so my mind was not functioning properly).
Knowing this and because I eventually planned to go to Syria (Syria, along with some other countries, will deny you entrance if you have an Israeli stamp in your passport), I wanted to get a second passport.
I'm a person who plans ahead.
When I asked about getting this second passport, I was told that I had to provide documentation of date of departure, i.e.
A ticket, which I did not have at the time.
So while I was trying to do something that was easiest for me by planning ahead, the state department is very specific about under what conditions they will issue you a second passport and it might not be in a manner that is convenient for you.
I've also had US embassies deny adding extra pages in my passport because I had 5 empty pages;
They wanted me to come back when I had 3 empty pages.
Again, I was planning ahead because I knew I was going to loose at least 3 of those pages for visas within the upcoming month.

The workaround for this is to go to the embassy and go in person and they will give you the pages.
You can explain in person and I do not see why they would refuse you there.
If it does not work with one embassy/consulate, try another while abroad and traveling.
The whole process (getting in) takes less than 30 minutes.

The five page excse is crap, if it occurs agaian immediately ask to speak with the head of mission or vice consul, you'll find that if the situation was as you state that they will immediately cave and give you the pages.
Regarding the 2nd passport, it is and has ALWAYS been well documented what situations warrant it and what you have to provide, if you were unable to display the need, then of course they denied your request.

I was at the embassy in person and was denied additional pages because I still had 5 blank pages in my large economy size passport.
It was quite obvious that I traveled a lot, had many visas, and would be using the additional pages.
It was a third country national working at the embassy who did this to me.
Finally I had to say look I am an American and I want to speak to another American about this.
They caved and I got the pages.

I think it's simply a matter of trying to do the minimum necessary work.
Making up reasons to avoid providing service is less work than providing the service.
However, once you ask for their superiors (actual foreign service officers), it is less work to perform the original request than deal with getting a supervisor and then likely being told to perform the service as had been requested.
