Forums - What makes a film a good film?
I have been thinking a lot lately at what makes a film good?
Is it more important to have a good story with good characters that entertains us?
Or to have a film that is shot beautifully.
For example, 2001: A Space Odyssey .
You will be hard pressed to find a film that looks better than this one but there is little to no story.

What truly makes a film good for me is the 9 or 10 I give it when it is really, really good.

A film has to be good on its own merits.
Not every film takes the same approach and tries to achieve the same thing.
As you said, 2001 has little story and the characters aren't very strong (I don't think I'm using the right word here) aside from HAL, but it isn't trying for that.
On the other hand, a film like Inherit the Wind isn't very strong visually, but does have strong characters, and makes its message clear and such, and it succeeds on those fronts.
And the film's quality is subjective for the most part - not everyone will agree if a film is good, and will cite valid (or retarded) reasons for their opinion.

What makes a good film?
A film maker who throughout the process of writing, pre-production, production and post production, is able to abandon his ego, overcome the business and persistantly strive to understand, realize and deliver his vision of a story that he is compelled to tell.
If he can maintain that purity and if he is smart and versatile enough to pick the right artists to work with (in all departments), then odds are he or she will make a great film.
If you look at great film makers or great film making teams - they all have one thing in common - persistance and lack of pretension.
They are both humble and obstinate bastards at the same time.
And of course they require lashings of cinematic and storytelling talent - but to be honest talents are dime a dozen compared to the balls it requires to stay on a truthful path.

Usually for me to consider a film good it must have both good characters and a good story.
If I can watch a film multiple times over the years without ever tiring of it than it fits my criteria of a good film.
There are not a lot of movies that fall into the category of entertaining repeat viewings though.

I'm with you on that a good film has to be one which excels in at least one or two departments ( don't forget the music in 2001) a rivetting script, superior acting ( rather than actors), audio or visually entrancing or a concept that has struck at exactly the right time.
What separates the good from the excellent is the feeling after you left the cinema that you were cheated by the lack in the other departments and god knows there are plenty of candidates out there that appear to have been produced edited or directed by a poorly trained chimp, Usually defined quite easily as those where the majority of the budget seems to have been spent in hyping the film up in the advertising media prior to release -will anybody not still wrestling with puberty and a testosterone overload go to see "Lesbian Vampire Killers" for those people its a good film maybe

If I like it,
then for me, personally,
it's a good film,
no matter what anyone else says about it.

Unfortunately, a great film is a film that brings in a lot of money.
A lot of headlines will go with the mention " makes a new record on first week-end".
Money is the true measuring stick to find out how much the public values a movie.
However, a "good" film - is purely subjective.
One can find great values in (i.e.) "Plan Nine From Outer Space" and think that (i.e.) "Requiem For A Dream" was devoid of purpose.
A film tells a story.
To tell a story, scenes are used.
When a movie is too long it must be cut (allowed theatre time i.e.), the rational way of thinking is "is this scene carrying the story forward?"
When I saw Terminator II, I had fun.
However, it is not a great film.
It is a "plastic movie" - More deaths, more stunts, more bravado, ect...
Terminator #1 had had all the scenes that had moved the story to it's conclusion.
Still, the movie became one of the biggest hits ever.
"Moviegoers" most probably consider what I've written as blashemy and Terminator 4 (I think???) coming up, is the next best thing to oxygen.
I have to agree (speculatively) with one of the poster above who said something like "a good film is a film I like".

I like the question, and all the answers from people responding.
My stepbrother insisted that 6th Sense was an average movie, with an incredible ending.
Whereas I loved it all the way thru.
Roger Ebert, I see on his website, goes on and on about how great a film Sugar is.
But it really isn't.
It's actually a disappointing movie, with some very lovely scenes.
Some very interesting characters.
And a different take on a sports film.
By the end of the day, there just isn't enough in that movie for it to be considered great.
Yet, he disagrees.
He ends his review saying something along the lines of "this is a very special movie."
Yet, I felt the movie was two hours long, with four good scenes.
That, to me, means it can't qualify as great.
Or even a movie I'd recommend.

Entertainment factor end of story.
WHo cares if the film has deeper meaning if it can't entertain the veiwer.
Now I don't mean things like Final Destination or F&F entertainment persay, rather I mean something that can captivate the audience.
Both TDK and The Wrestler are entertaining but their appraoch is very different.
One offers spectecale, which instantly grabs the viewer, while the other entertains the audience by offering a reward of something more profound.
A films should not be judged on the message, look at milk it had a good message but it was very weak film, ratehr it should be judge by how well it captivates and engages the audience.

What truly makes a film good for me is the involvement of Steve Buscemi in some way.

There's no one answer to your question.
It's purely subjective.

The Steve Buscemmi thing ruled!
But yes, there IS an answer to the question.
I think someone just answered it very well, with the use of Dark Knight and The Wrestler.
Both movies that most of us would agree are good films.
