travel and work... - PomsInOz Forum
Me and a friend are going traveling and working our way around Australia, starting in Sydney!
Was just wondering if anyone can give any advice on when i should start applying for jobs or know of a good temping agency that would sort us out some work before going.
This would lift alot off my mind.
Thanx

What sort of work are you after?
You can generally find work if you ask at a YHA (if you stay there);
The owners generally act as informal agents for local industry, it'll be cleaning cars, painting houses, that sort of thing.
Generally, the sort of jobs you can apply for before coming out aren't going to emply vagrant workers, you might find somewhere that places people picking fruit but you won't get temporary work as a civil engineer, if that makes sense.
If you're after cash in hand, you won't have any problems if you come out and ask around.

Our daughter has been in Oz on whv since last October and has found it very difficult to find work.
If you look at seek.com.au you can search for temp positions in a particular area but if you are lucky enough to get a reply it is usually to tell you that you have been unsuccesful but to apply again if they advertise.
The hostels do get work in but you have to be up early as they go fast, you can also pick up work in the hostels but you have to be staying there for a few weeks for them to employ you (rather than an odd week).
To work in a bar you need to have a RSA (responsible serving of alcohol) cert, be aware there are different ones for each state, or you night end of wasting your money.
Wiaitressing jobs usually wany you to have experience so just depends what skills you have up your sleeves.
I think if you stay in one area for at least 3 months it might be easier to pick up work just make sure you have some money behind you and have fun, it's a great country!
