Mobile/Cell phone operators in Australia - Topix
Hi im just looking to choose a mobile/cell phone operator in Sydney.
What are the options and who would you recommend?

Hi. There are 4 main operators: Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and Three.
You'll no doubt know several of these global brands already.
Personally, I am pleased after my switch to Three.
Their cap plans allow for international calls, and they have quite generous call rates when using global roaming to other countries with Three networks.
Some people say Telstra is better if you plan to spend a lot of time out of the main cities.
Optus and Vodafone are ok too, but I like the features and bundles that Three offer.
Also they can send their bills by PDF.
Not sure if the others can do this yet.

Apparently there is no area code in Australia and all cell phone calls are local calls inside the country so one can buy it in Syndey and life in Melbourne.
Is this correct?

The 4 digit prefix used to indicate which carrier it was but as you can change carriers and keep the same number it may not still be the same if that user has switched.

In cities, there is no clear best coverage as they all cover them well, although there can be odd buildings with problems.
It's generally okay with any although if you can, it can be useful to try first at your specific address.

Not quite.
A mobile call is billed the same throughout the country, but there are area codes across the country for fixed telephones.
You can certainly buy a mobile telephone in Sydney and use it anywhere else in the country.

From what I've read, Optus and Vodafone have the exclusive rights to distribute iPhone in Australia.
Not sure if the new Apple store will carry the iPhones though.
