Brodal Sarey or Mouy Thai? - Topix
Who is the orignal founder of this sport?
Seems like Siem(Thailand) is racking all the glit, glamour, and glory of this sport?
I need some answers.
The movies Ong Bak and Tom-Yum Goong are brutaly awsome, if you're into matial art.
Is it true that Tony Jaa, the star in those movies is Khmer Sarin?
I noticed he wore a red/white scarf around his neck in Tom-Yum Goong, which only worn by Khmer.
If you haven't seen those movies, check them out in your local Khmer DVD stores.
I think Blockbuster has Ong Bak.

Muay Thai is credited to THAILAND.
The sport was originated in the 1238AD.
It was a form of entertaiment for the King.
Also, Tony Jaa is Thai but he can speak Khmer.

I've been to Srok khmer yet, but I heard that there is a carving of this sport on the wall in Bayon Temple.
If that is the case, Bayon Temple built before 1238AD?
So Brodal Sarey was adopted from Muay Thai?

Here's a article of Khmer kickboxing:
Cambodia reclaims kickboxing heritage
"After decades of war, kickboxing was forgotten and the athletes were weak.
Now we are trying our best to restore our reputation" - Um Yurann In its latest battle with neighbouring Thailand over cultural heritage, Cambodia is moving to reclaim its stake in a sport that it says it originated.
Kickboxing, made famous in the region by skilled Thai fighters, is on the rise in Cambodia after three decades of strife put the pleasures of sport on the back burner.Cambodian fighters are now sparring against each other and visitors from other countries, including Thailand - and they're winning.
Um Yurann, deputy director of the Cambodian Boxing Federation, is at the forefront of the cultural battle and points to bass reliefs on the ancient walls of the ninth to 12th century Angkor temples as proof that Cambodians have been practising the sport for centuries."After decades of war, kickboxing was forgotten and the athletes were weak.
Now we are trying our best to restore our reputation," Yurann said."But we are still poor and most of our boxers are in poor living conditions.
They do not have enough energy to practise." But they do practise, at some 70 boxing clubs around the country and with determination to become world-class athletes some day.
"We often have foreign kickboxers from Japan, France, Thailand, Australia, Spain, Sweden, Canada and other countries who come to compete with our boxers," Um Yurann said."Sometimes we lose, sometimes we win.
This is normal." It is clear on any given weekend that Cambodians are embracing the sport wholeheartedly.
Television stations have begun staging weekly matches that spectators can watch at the studios in Phnom Penh or live on TV.
Coach Chhith Sarim said it was unfortunate that Cambodia lost its spot in the world of kickboxing while the country was at war, but he's determined to win it back."Our kickboxers are really good and it is not proper that Thailand says Cambodia copied its game while we were busy with war," Sarim said.Cambodian kickboxers - like other athletes, entertainers and intellectuals - were targeted by the Pol Pot's murderous Khmer Rouge soldiers during the group's 1975-79 regime.
An estimated 1.7 million people died from execution, disease, starvation and overwork during the Khmer Rouge's nearly four-year rule.
A decade of Vietnamese occupation in the 1980s and continuing war and poverty in the 1990s prevented enthusiasts from rebuilding the sport
until recently.

Thank for this enlighting info Choi.
I checked out that website, under Muay Thai and the article is very vague, no mention of Cambodia involement in the sport, instead Burma was mentioned.I guess if I asked the Thai, the Burmese, or the Khmer, all will say that it's their sport.
Well, when I visit Cambodia, I will go to Bayon Temple or any other temples and look for that relief carving of this sport, hopefully it's there.
This is probably the only sure way to find out who truly has the credit, other are just imitators.

Actually, i don't want to bear any bitterness agianst Thais.
But WE HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT "GREAT KHMER EMPIRE" WAS DEMOLISHED by those were called SIAM (Thais).
They INVADED and EXPLOITED our land and its TREASURE!
If I would be a Cambodian stateman, i would deal with such present GREEDs of some Thais.
They STOLE and still want some more!
Their thirst of our HERITAGE should be stopped!
They have such desire to see us dissappear from the MAP!?
Some might take history class: "GREEK and ROMANs history".
Well, KHMER can be compared to "Greek", as Thai to "Roman".
We are more senior to them in term of nationhood and culture!
PLS.
STOP STEALLING OUR SOUL or your whole nation would be under punishment!

GREAT NEWS! Ref. to my previous post.
We have to understand that Khmer was collapsed seriously during the Killing Fields when 1970s and 1980s to early 90s we were hospitalized for some reasons.
I used to visit Bayon Temple.
Yeah, it's be really great if you could be there soon!
I agree with you that Thai and Burmese are just curious/cute imitators.
And now they are cool pretenders as owners of the KICK BOXING.
If they are really BUDDHIST, they should follow the FIVE PRECEPTs of taught by BUDDHA: NO KILLING, NO STEALING...etc...
So who will punish and judge the thief?!!??

In deed, KICK BOXING "BRADAS SEREY KHMER" is belong to KHMER PEOPLE.
As it's inscripted on BAYON TEMPLE walls.
I agree with Mr. Um Yurann and the rest about Khmer identity of the sport.
I know that Thai play the 'game' well in global arena and promotes it in "their names sake" but i would like to REMIND all KICK BOXING fans & fighters that "KHMER OWNS IT".
And oneday it will be RECOGNIZED as "KHMER PROPERTY".
We will never bow down to any scheme of friendly but greedy neighbors.
We will stand strong and fight for it because it's our ANCESTORS' gift for KHMERs.
U K
UNITED KHMER!

Wow..thank you KonKhmer, I didn't know that there are some of us still living in Phillipines.
I used to live there in the early 80's as a refugee with my family.
I was around 6 yrs old, learning basic English there.
Filipinos overthere were just like us, very friendly people.
I came to the U.S around 8 yrs old.
Anyhow, your input is another important testimonial proof that Khmer could be the founder.
I'm more and more convince now.
Again..thank you.

Again, I am "STRONGLY DISAGREE" with this statement.
We still CAN NOT CONCLUDE that "KICK BOXING has its origin from Thailand.
It has NO SOLID BASIS.
Remember, the so called 'SIAM' invaded us and brought with them our TREASURE, ANCIENT documents????
I think we should return to the KHMER HISTORY BOOKS.
I cannot remember exact DATE of Bayon Temple.
Thanks

I feel very very sore that Thai invaded us, stole our land & treasures/heritage, copy our culture, and try to imitate almost everything from KHMERs.
They are trying their best to show the 'broken world' that they are the real & AUTHENTIC OWNER.
Well, their greed, wrong ambition towards us Khmer will be oneday punished!
I declare it. I dare to speak it for what they had been doing to Khmers!
Justice will prevail!
=>
Example: I hate to hear some say that "Angkor Wat belongs to Thailand".
You see, they occupied us for sometime and then demanded us to remove ANGKOR WAT from our souls!!
Very deadly dream, friends!
Stop it before it's uncurable!

I agree with you KonKhmer.
The siems shouldn't steal other cultures identity and claim it as their, its just wrong.
One day with will seek our revenge and the siems people will have to bow down to us Khmers.
Long live Cambodia and its people!!!

Glad you asked, I live in Long Beach, California.
I have dial-up connection internet service, so that's why you see all those cities and towns poped up due to the same area coda as Long Beach.
Anyway, there are a lot of Khmer here, too bad we don't have a town call Little Phnom penh, at least not yet.
Khmer communty leaders are working hard to create one through Long Beach City Council.
I just think Khmer here are not united enough, we're too seperated here, I don't know why.
I was very young to remember any Khmer Rouge experience.
But my father always reminded about his enduring hardship during that time.

Well, I hope I didn't stir up any anymousity for Thailand.
I always know that their culture are so much similar to us.
So Khmer has two untrusted neighbors, Vietnam and Thailand.
I know during Khmer Empire, Khmer very much had Thailand, Laos, and today Vietnam as part of its territory.
I don't know much about how Thailand got what they have now, territorially.
I always heard old folks talked about Siem is a traitor of Khmer Empire.
I must say, Laos is the only freindly neighbor, eventhough it is Thailand's little brother.
I need to do some research between Thailand and Cambodia.

An addition from above: My family and I lived in Thailand for about 4 years as a refugees in many of the camps near Cambodia/Thailand border before we were transfer to Philippine.
I did remember some of the mistreatment of Khmer people inside the camp by Thai soldiers guarding the camp.
I remembered being chased down with my friends by Thai soldier becausee we were playing this one game involved tossing coins into a hole.
And those coins had an image of Thai's king.
I guess that soldier found that very degrading and offensive.
Anyhow, we were little kids being chased down like a pack of wild animals.
I was so frighten, I ran to my mother.
There are countless mistreatment of the Khmer refugees and Human Right or U.N observers were never around when there was an incident.

Great to hear that!
Jum reab suor to all Khmers over there!!
Of course I have no intention to stir up the 2nd riot either..
Well, I was offered a private scholarship to study in Thailand late 2000.
But it's was not God's plan for me.
I ended up being in the Philippines.
One of the reasons that i hate most is being asked to 'change my name' in the way it's spelled and sounded!
But it's very personal but it should be a great Example: the sound and spell from "Meangsophean" into "Mangsophan"...
Huhss,,, my name is sound like alien to Khmer's ears alredy if the TWO "E E" are stolen...
Think of such trick!?
WAKE UP KHMERs!
Well, i dare to predict this: in the near future, whatsoever were stolen or copied by our nasty neighbors, will surely be returned and paid for to us the REAL OWNER!
We won't judge them but God and natural laws will do!
They won't go free!
They have hurt us so much already.
These days, they are at peace and happy after cutting our hands and feet and sucking our blood for centuries!
Why do we have such blood-thirst neighbors!!??
God bless CAMBODIA!

I'm very happy and admire your success in your education.
You must do quite well to get a scholarship to study abroad.
You English is excellent.
Don't mind my spelling, sometime I'm in such a hurry to type what I need say so the comment block don't start to go blank on me, that I mispelled and forget some of the words.
You should check out some of other topics, most are very interesting.
I want to say that I encourage all Khmer to dig deep in their soul to rediscover themselves that Khmer is on the comeback.
We must not give up the hope and dream because of our misfortune history in the past few decades.
And I agree with you KonKhmer, WAKE UP KHMER!!!

Oh about such injustice treatment!?!?
I had personal story when i was in Bangkok airport 2001.
I had to visit friends in Bagkok before returning to the Philippines.
I took bus from Phnom Penh to BKK with proper documents, visa of course...
Well, i was so so shocked that one pregnant staff of a specific airline terminated by check in.
Imagine, she talked to me and my Khmer friend like suspects, interrogated me with imhuman behavors and unprofessional manners...So bitter....
You know the reason?
Well, we had only Manila - BKK round trip tickets since we come to study here and went to Thailand by bus.
Finally, she called up her boss at 12am...you see midnight already..
Honestly, i was not afraid...
I stood tall, talked with them bravely talk and talk...
Then,,, they did force us to buy unneccesary round trip tickets: PP - BKK..
They played with us..
And there are many more similar experiences happen in that manner, air travel..not counting other people staying or working in Thailand....
They degraded and descriminate us!!
