Incredible TED talk: How we re-grew a rainforest : environment

Welcome to environment Reddit!

Permaculture with a business plan eh?

Its a good way to take it to the mainstream.

Just give bill mollison his credit though. i recommend anyone interested in this type of agriculture/forestry to research permaculture and forest gardening HERE which is about the guy who first pushed this concept over monocultural agriculture (planting a munch of one thing over and over and over which usually ends up in killing the soil) anyhooz its interesting.

Watch it.

I have heard of similar such ideals in passing on other projects, mostly integrating local grassland species to help increase yields and biodiversity in western agriculture.

It is pretty amazing to see these sort of concepts applied on a scale like this though. It's just the thing I needed to restore my faith in humanity for the day. Hope this guy wins some serious recognition for his contributions too.

It's easy. Fire up the epoch and let Robo handle the rest.

I asked my girlfriend what I should name Robo.

She came up with the name "Ted" That's fuckin eerie

He makes me think of the Planetologist from the novel Dune.

I just read the chapter where Liet/Kynes dies.

:'(

If this project can be replicated, it will help change one of the most depressing assumptions of our time...

That we're irrevocably destroying our planet.

I can't believe the down votes.

Is Reddit turning into a bunch of grumpy cynics? Willie Smits spent two decades doing this and now for the first time, his work is being shared.

It's one of the most hopeful stories I personally have ever heard.

The long standing O speaks for itself.

Are you Chris Anderson?

Yes indeed. Watched the talk live and thought/hoped it shd be seen across the world.

We're honored to have you.

TED is the best thing since tropical reforestation.

I felt embarrassed for them

Proves that humans have the capacity to affect the environment in both directions.

Our intelligence and skills allow us to be either the greatest enemies or the kindest shepherds of our planet.

I think it's time we collectively turn around and started working in the correct direction.

This is why we are on earth : to undo the caustic harm done by our dimwit, greedy brethren. I am so proud of him, i cant even begin to describe it. The topic gets 101 out of 10 from me, but his delivery style (bullet-fast and slightly irate) was not the best...however, style is unimportant in front of substance.

I can also imagine the incredible political and local pettiness he must have encountered to achieve this success, and ignorance does wear patience down...so i can doubly understand the tone he took.

Why we are on earth : to undo the caustic harm done by our dimwit, greedy brethren Paradoxical, yes?

This makes me want to quit my job and go work on this.

I had the exact same experience

Yer, work like thins would no doubt be very emotionally rewarding.

This was an amazing video, thanks for submitting it.

This is an inspirational video.

And I'm jaded and apathetic.
