Ask programming reddit: AI programming, where do I start? : programming

I have a background in linguistics and cognitive science, and I've recently developed an interest in combining those with my computer programming habit.

Are there any resources you could recommend for me?

(Something more specific than just "Learn LISP" would be nice!)

Don't really have any suggestion. Just came to upvote your post.

Some redditors felt that they should downvote you because they are not interested in what you're asking.

That's not the reddit I know, this should stop.

Hey, I'm not into AI at all.

But I did snap up that link on reddit a while ago.

Maybe this might be of interest to you? 10 years' worth of game AI research papers Link to the reddit comment thingie dooda. I also found this, when I searched for that reddit link above, from the same domain.

Lisp is not at all necessary but it seems to be the most widely leveraged language in the field, particularly in available texts. I am no expert but I would consider any of the Novig's texts to be a great place to start. http://www.amazon.com/Paradigms-Artificial-Intelligence-Programming-Studies/dp/1558601910/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234287538&sr=1-2 Is widely respected.

If you're interested in Machine Learning, then check out Stanford's online material.

The video lectures are very good. http://see.stanford.edu/see/courseinfo.aspx?coll=348ca38a-3a6d-4052-937d-cb017338d7b1

Here's a few things I've found since I recently really started researching this, too: Jeff Hawkings on Artificial Intelligence - This got me pretty excited and serious about AI (you can find a few other videos of him talking about his ideas) On Intelligence by Jeff Hawkins: google preview - book's website I just bought this book last week about a couple hours after watching those videos...I'm not quite finished reading it yet.

(also see Numenta ) Stanford's Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning class (you can even download all the lecture videos) VideoLectures.net - Machine Learning (there's also an Artificial Intelligence category in the parent Computer Science category) I really think Jeff Hawkins has come across something huge in this field, though, so I'm really trying to study his book and various papers found on numenta.com and onintelligence.com, and research anything I think of from those places.

It would be a lot nicer if there was a decent open source project based on his ideas, though (I'm considering starting one when I know enough of what I'm doing with it...maybe in python or clojure (currently learning clojure)).

It depends. What do you want it to do?
