After suffering a financial meltdown, 60-70% of Iceland's fishing stock is infected by a parasite, making it nearly impossible to sell. Fishing accounts for half of Iceland's exports. : worldnews

News about the rest of the world - everything ASIDE from USA. U.S.

Internal news, politics, foreign policies, quirky/funny stuff etc.

Should be submitted to politics , news , offbeat , Israel etc We did it!

You raised enough money to build our xkcd school in Laos!!

I have linked to the search for 'herring' because the last article doesn't explain the parasite or the consequences of it.

I thought Iceland's main export was Bjork.

I thought Iceland's main export was LazyTown.

Its a fishy time to catch a fish, the catch will end up crazy, you gotta do the catching with a hook, you know you cant be lazy!

You get Lazytown dubbed for South Central LA?

Witness the unholiest video on tha interwebz

How can I un-see something? Edit: It's pure awesome. Edit: OK, now I can't stop playing it.

And oddly addictive, I think you'll find

Thanks, I thought I was the only one..

Isn't it lovely seeing a Lazy Town virgin popping their cherry.

I see what you did there and I wish I could upmod you a hundred times. Edit: Took a while, but I found a link that hasn't yet been taken down: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcrFb_cYxHA

LazyTown and Eve Online are actually very important to Iceland, especially now.

I thought Iceland's main export was Bang Gang. http://www.banggang.net/

Lazy Town minus Stephanie equals zero. And Stephanie is - FUCK YEAH!

- American.

I thought it was blue eyed, blond haired, hot raver chicks...

No. That's their primary waste product.

Dammit, I came here to post that.

Good thing I searched the comments first.

Apparently you can still eat the fish?

I can't find info on this particular parasite, but in general white fish parasites are 1.

Common 2. killed by cooking or freezing.

Unless you're making sushi, they aren't much of a concern.

I strongly doubt it "makes it impossible to sell" (the article says no such thing either). What is more concerning is whether this affects the growth rate of the fish stocks, possibly reducing sustainable yield.

Http://newsfrettir.com/?p=908 : it is not suitable to be presented to sell infected fish for human consumption - despite there is no danger

Aye, there is a similar problem happening to the Irish right now with Pork and Beef exports. Export and trade laws mean you cant sell them, although in many cases they are still safe to eat.

So...the fish is evolving to make itself less appetizing to humans?

Cod has already evolved to become stunted, stuck at a juvenile size.

You can, but from the sources I found (see paper Quote: under here) it drastically worsens the fish's appearance, making its sale much harder (even more so as an export).

Furthermore, it has a strong impact on the fish's survivability and the growth rate of the stock.

That parasite was called George Bush...

It's okay, the other half is whiskey.

Sales will be soaring.

Actually, the other half is bananas. I shit you not -- Iceland is known for exporting bananas.

That is bizarre. Less bizarre, but more relevant to why I was talking about whiskey like a crazy person, is that I thought the headline said "Ireland".

Funny you should mention that... The Irish company Fyffe is one of the largest banana companies in the world.

Each year it buys the entire crop of bananas from Belize.

Half our mail gets mistakenly routed to Ireland.

If there were a town called Reykjavik down there, we'd never see any of it back.

I think it's because people tend to read by only looking at the tops of letters (saw that on reddit a while back) and the tops of 'r' and 'c' look a lot alike.

I shit you not -- Iceland is known for exporting bananas. Apparently there's a virus going around killing off Bananas, with the recent shit that's been happening to Iceland I wouldn't be surprised if those Banana's fell victim to it.

Practically all bananas are clones, so it isn't entirely unlikely to happen.

We'll just genetically modify larger plantains, NO ONE WILL KNOW

Haha I picture this being said at a dole board meeting, "We'll know Tom, We'll know {Pained Expression}"

I wouldn't be surprised if those Banana's fell victim to it. Cool - I wasn't expecting a genuine Greengrocers' Apostrophe in an article about Iceland's fishing industry. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-greengrocers-apostrophes.htm

Are you sure? Wikipedia lists Iceland's main exports, in addition to fish, as "aluminum, ferro-silicon alloys, machinery and electronic equipment …, software, and woollen goods". Edit: Wikipedia also informs me that Iceland grows bananas to demonstrate how geothermal springs can create local tropical climates.

However, Iceland remains a net importer of bananas.

Well, I was being facetious...

But they are known for it (probably because it's really weird for them to be able to produce such a thing).

A whole what?

(while slacking off from programming in Reykjavík) That sounds about right.

Also, the herring is a small portion of the fishing and the haddock is mostly consumed locally.

The main export is the cod and if that gets infected, you can kiss our cold and wet arses good-bye. (back to programming - ${deity} knows we need the exports)

I hate to sound like an utter tourist but Reykjavík was the most beautiful city I've been to.

The setting, the surroudings..

All of it. Went on a tour to the springs and Gullfloss waterfall and on the way, the coach just pulled over to this lay-by and they told us to go over this hill.. I'm not sure what it was called, but it was this giant crater with icy blue waters.

Bjork played in the middle of it during a gig apparently. Fascinating place.

How can you not mention the people?!

I don't know your gender/sexuality but the women!

MY DEITY! THE WOMEN!

That's what Iceland should be exporting!

Bad grammar headline.

The subject of the (first) sentence is "fishing stock", which makes the sentence have a bizarre meaning.

Nothing ambiguous to me. Subject: Fishing stock What happened to it: 60-70% of it is infected The result: it is now impossible to sell it Coincidentally: Iceland is suffering a financial meltdown.

What did Iceland do to piss off his Noodle-ness so?

They got infected by a parasite, making it nearly impossible to borrow.

That parasite was financial deregulation.

I got the parasite.

I need the remedy.

I had the pulsating rhythmical economy. I've got no poisson, no poisson, waah!

Whaling?

If his noodle-ness didn't want us to eat whales he wouldn't have made them so tasty. RA-men. (Also, Iceland caught 40 Minke whales last year, not much).

40 out of what?

I think some 60,000.

Minke numbers are quite healthy, it's the larger whales that require much longer to build up.

[Minke's are more like supersized Dolphins]

40 actually sounds quite a lot for such a tiny country.

Germany's population is 256 times higher, but they somehow managed to get along without catching 10,240 whales.

(In fact, for all I know, they caught exactly 0.)

Well personally I know I NEED my lattern oil and amber!

YOU CAN NOT TAKE THEM AWAY FROM ME!

Amber doesn't come from whales.

You're thinking of ambergris.

In perfumery ambergris is simply referred to as amber.

Oh, sorry. I thought we were talking about whales.

Relative to Minke stocks 40 is reasonable.

If anyone gets a chance, they should read/watch this Frontline report on whaling and the people of the Faroe Islands .

It gives one a clearer perspective of why they hunt whales and their culture too. For more than 1,000 years, the people here have hunted pilot whales, and whale meat continues to be an important part of their diet.

But when pictures of whale hunts first appeared in the media during the 1980s, many from the outside world were shocked and animal rights activists mounted an anti-whaling campaign.

The protests eventually abated, partly because the Faroese are not involved in commercial whaling.

Faroes != Iceland - they have a financial system.

Ah, right... I see your point.

The report also concerns the mercury in the whales.

Which has risen and affects the children there.

"You must cut down the mightiest tree in the forest with....

A HERRING!!!" "Well, that's about all it's good for now." (cry)

They're certainly treading on thin ice.

For those wondering, the name of the parasite can be found further down the page: Ichthyophonus, a fungal disease apparently common in haddocks, plaices and herrings. Disease name Ichthyophonus, Ichthyosporidiosis, Taumelkrankheit, staggers Etiology Ichthyophonus ha feri Plehn and Mulsow, 19 1 1.

Once placed incorrectly in the genus Ichthysporidium.

Considered to be a phycomycete fungus, but poorly described and may include more than one species. Associated environmental conditions None known Geographical distribution Probably worldwide, especially in temperate zones.

Common in the east and west North Atlantic and North Sea with records also from the Mediterranean region, Australia, and Japan.

Localized high infection levels have been found. Significance Epizootics of the disease reported in herring in the western North Atlantic (up to 25 '10 infection) with associated drastic reductions in the population, and in U.K.

Waters in plaice (up to 10% infection) with severe emaciation of fish and locally high population mortalities, in mackerel (up to 69% infection), and in haddock (up to 80 % infection).

Although haddock may normally tolerate infection, significant spoilage of flesh and rejection of fish for human consumption occurs in heavily infected areas.

Outbreaks of the disease with resulting poor growth rates and high mortality levels have occurred in freshwater-cultivated salmonids in the USA, Europe, and Japan, and have usually been connected with the prior feeding of fresh sea fish. Control No practical treatment for the control of Ichthyophonus is known once the disease has become established.

In early stages some success has been reported using a series of intramuscular injections of penicillin or phenoxethol in food and as a bath treatment.

To prevent the disease it is essential to eliminate untreated marine fish or infected fish waste from the diet of farm or aquarium fish. Gross clinical signs Symptoms of Ichthyophonus infection include nervous disorders (swimming abnormalities, loss of pigment control), abdominal distension duc to kidney failure or swelling of visceral organs, wasting of body musculature, and occasionally ulceration of the skin.

Internal signs of the disease are white nodules and streaks up to several millimetres in size through all soft tissues of the body and particularly in those organs well supplied with blood (heart, liver, kidney, spleen). Histopathology Sections of infected tissues reveal the most commonly observed developmental stage of the fungus, the thick-walled 'resting' spore (Fig.

2, haddock kidney).

These spores, observed by phase contrast illumination in fresh squash preparations of fish tissue (Fig.

3, plaice kidney), permit the rapid diagnosis of infection.

Clear differentiation from other forms of cysts is made possible by allowing germination of the short multibranched hyphae to occur either in the dead host's tissues or in culture media (Fig.

4, spores in modified Eagle's medium;

Fig. 5, spore in modified Hagem's medium).

In the early stages of infection there is usually a marked inflammatory reaction surrounding individual spores, which is followed by the deposition of a fibrous or connective tissue capsule.

Severe focal granuloma, bounded by a thin connective tissue capsule, may develop around infection sites with, in herring, the formation of necrotic areas which can erupt through the skin surfaces.

Variations in the degree of encapsulation, involvement of melanin, and other aspects of the host response have been noted among different fish species.

Hyphae are seldom observed in sections. Natural transmission of the disease is probably oral through ingestion of spores from the water or through feeding on infected fish.

Mobile amoeboid stages or plasmodia with few nuclei, demonstrable in uiuo or migrating in culture (Fig.G), are released into the gut, penetrate the gut wall, and become dispersed throughout the body by the circulatory system.

Those lodging in the capillary beds become centres of primary infection or foci for secondary infection. ICHTHYOPHONUS, a systemic fungal disease of fish edit: fixed the markdown section titles

I love hard science.

It's only the herring.

Not the whole stock.

Our main export is Cod...

And so far that does not appear to be affected, so this is not nearly as bad as it seems.

Hyperbolic headline is hyperbolic.

Cod? Do you export Call of Duty?

Plus the article says 40% of the stock is infected.

60-70% is only in one specific area.

You want a surreal couple of seconds, I tuned into NPR and then out of nowhere the fuckers broke into song about studies demonstrating the negative connection between media and health. I let them finish their song;

Then I turned off the radio and turned around.

I went home and double checked that I had taken my medicine. I had.

.5 cuils?

Do you remember the show/time?

This sounds like a rare treat on NPR.

I'm going to call my local NPR broadcast station when I get done with class.

On The Media . (I responded to your previous post before I saw this, but I thought I would put the answer here to make sure you and cbapel see it).

Thanks! I'll upmod both of them.

That was On The Media .

I love those guys, because it's a great show full of interesting stories and in-depth analysis, and sometimes, out of nowhere, they'll do something completely bizarre and hilarious like that. Oh, and who knew that Brooke had such a sultry singing voice?

I can't wait 'till you find out about Vatican City.

Vatican City's main export of God felt down substantially in the last decade, around 20 to 30 percent, seriously affecting the state's economy;

But annalists expect a comeback during the recent global slowdown and the aftermath of the global financial meltdown.

But annalists hehehe

Butt analists

Wow... thanks captain obvious.

We would not have gotten it otherwise! LOL

I didn't doubt you would get it.

I was just correcting the spelling.

Butt anal cysts

Too far

Has been crossed

Wait, what does Roman history have to do with the current economic crisis?

;)

Their economy wasn't affected at all. They just began exporting pedosodomites instead.

Now had the USA said that, no one would bat an eye.

Everyone knows our main export is FREEDOM.

I saw "our main export is Cold...", which I thought made perfect sense for a second.

There's still Cod in the ocean?

Gad zooks! Hey Newfoundlanders!

Iceland took da cod!

Hmm, Cod.

What?

Hmm, Cod!

Eh?

Or...You can load them into bazookas and fire them at the British.

Feed them to chickens in chickenfarms and give them antibiotics?

Or you can paint them red and use them to win elections.

Yeah, but we in Portugal are the ones buying your cod, and pretty soon we won't be able to afford it.

It's 60-70% of the herring not 60-70% of all fish.

Sure herring is one of our biggest exports (It's allowed to fish 150.000 holds in 2008-2009) but there are also other types of fish that we fish in large quantities. Cod 130.000 holds Haddock 93.000 holds Pollock 65.000 holds It's a large blow but it's obviusly not 60-70% of all our fishing exports.

I read Bollock...

And I was afraid of Iceland.

Oh my, and here I read Bollocks in your comment, and was totally confused!

I even got thirsty as i re-read my own "read" as saying "mead"!

Actually, we do eat those (look for Ram's testicles) as well.

Surprisingly enough, no one has been successful in exporting them though.

Haddock can also be infected by that parasite (and, in fact, is)

Is that the next version of ubuntu?

I thought it was Jacked Jizz

Upmodded for connecting Haddock from Tintin to Barnacle (a parasite)

Tartar Sauce!!

I love tartar sauce.

Fuckin sayin.. that shit dopes everything up, yo.

Takes hot french fries to a whole new level.

They are all a part of one ecosystem.

Believe me, there will be consequences to other stocks.

What are the kronor prices for common goods over there nowadays?

I have been trying to find an online store that sold stuff w/ prices in ISK, but no luck

Wtf happened to Iceland, from top country to bottom list?

Growth fueled by debt?

I guess so, but so suddenly.

Yeah, it's terrible. We're almost down to 2005 living standards. How will we ever cope.

All you can do is to hold tight, these are strange times, and good luck!

Oh well, least you still have have the weather right ? oh, wait..

I have to say, this is starting to seem like a conspiracy to force Iceland to join the EU.

Glad someone else thought of this When I was reading the article and contemplating the plight of these poor bastards, a fleeting thought came to my mind: "Would they still be in this position had they joined the European Union?"

It would be even worse because they wouldn't have control over their interest rates.

Good point

No, it would have been better since we couldn't have controlled the interest rates...

:)

Why so serious?

Herring stock != fishing stock Rarrr!

That's one huge parasite!

10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 1. How many of these numbers are below average?

I bet it was a false flag.

"It also said there that all of the herring was sent to be smelted." Is that like turducken?

Oh god, that must have smelled AWFUL.

Not at all like the way I remember Icelandic girls smelling.

Hey Icelander's let me know when the girls will marry me for a Hershey's bar okay?

Gonna have a bad time...

Cod has sent this punishment!

Now, Pharoah of Iceland, Set My People Free!

When it rains it pours.

I think Cheney was fishing there and pissed in the water.

Everything he touches dies.

Except for government contracts.

Anytime I read "Iceland" it immediately becomes "Iceman" in my head, so I keep imagining the X-Men getting their ass kicked by Magneto and Iceman being too broke to do anything to help. That being said, reddit needs more Iceland headlines.

That was mind bogglingly awesome.

Many Cuils to you, good sir or madam!

So fish has become Iceland's official currency?

Man the harpoons is all that I can say.

There's enough whale around here to feed even a couple of Americans.

That would be enough to sustain a medium sized third world country...

Like Belgium!

It's call insurance, mate.

Sell it to China so they can sell it to us, problem solved.

Am I supposed to feel sorry for them?

Putting all of your eggs in one basket has never worked

Next up: Plague of locusts.

Maybe Iceland needs a bailout.

I'd rather we bailout a people than banks that should've known better.

What the hell am I going to eat?

I've been eating nothing but SvenskaBjorner pickled Cod from IKEA for the last 2 years.

If this keeps up the whole country is going to have to fall back on careers in fashion modeling.

Article: "around 40% of the stock is infected." Reddit headline: "60-70% of Iceland's fishing stock is infected." Downmodded.

I have room and board available for hot Icelandic women...

The tragic consequences of letting the bankers run wild in the US pales in comparison to the challenges now facing the Icelandic Volk.

Our hearts go out to our Nordic brethren.

Fucking hell, man.

Is Iceland full of black cats and shattered mirrors?

=/

I thought most of their export was bands with shimmering soundscapes

Those who ate fish or seafood at least once a week had a significant reduced risk of incident dementia adjusted for age and sex (RR=0.66). 0.66 is a huge difference in risk compared to 1.00. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15129300 And Fish liver oil IS NOT same as eating fish..

Just Omega 3 oil itself did nothing in another study.

I predict a massive volcano eruption within two months

Why does this make me feel like you run a Time Cube-like website?

This puts a lot of pressure on the band Sigur Ros to sell more albums.

If you give an Icelander a fish, he'll eat for a day.

Well that sucks

Lutefisk futures down 70% Oh noes!
