pornstar's truck build - SPLBassX.Com Forums
Ok for starters:
the truck is an 87 nissan hardbody.
I picked it up from w87minitrucker last february for 300 bucks.
Its been sitting for a year waiting.
Some of you may recall i had done a little work on it back in october when i had my accident.
I started again in the beginning of february.
some of these pics are from last year around april or may when i sound deadend the doors, and started the cutout.
And the rest are current pics.
it started out as a red nissan, from the factory.
The original owner drove it till it got old, then turned it into his hunting/weekend truck, and painted it camo
after the truck was sold, the next owner (wv87minitrucker) decided to sand off all the camo colors, and this is what he found.
This is also the way he left it, and the way it looked the day i brought it home n february of 05
In april, i pulled it in the garage and decided to do a little work on it.
first up was to get rid of the two tone "paint job" i didnt want to invest money in paint yet, since i knew it would be getting body work and paint down the road, so a quick trip to walmart for several cans of rattle can primer, took car of fixing the exterior looks somewhat.
After that was done, i decided to go ahead and do my cutout for the speaker enclsosure.
now, i originally bought the truck to turn it into a lowrider custom show truck for car & truck shows.
It was not going to be my dbdrag vehicle.
so, when i started the cutout, i was only going to cutout a small section, large enough for a box with two 12's.
Because the rest of the bed was going to be custom interior, seats, tv's etc...
that's the reason for the small cutout.
on to the pics
h lets see, first we need some tools...
measure twice, cut once...
i wonder how these windows come out????
ahhhh there we go!
Well, here goes nothin!!!!!!!
Then i decided to go ahead and peal & seal the doors while i was at it.
lets rip those panels off.
measure it out, and cut it...
Gotta love peal & seal.
always clean your surface with metal prep.
And it wont come off when you're done!
i always heat with a torch to get the tar nice and gooey, then roll it.
I have never had peal & seal come off, when done the proper way.
there we go, one door down.
Time to start the driver's side.
La-di-da.. oh so boring
and there we have it.
that was all a single day of work.
Back in april. primer, cutout, and doors.
Not bad for 1 day after work.
In november, i got an inkling to do a little work on the truck.
so i pulled it back in the garage, and lowered the front and back 3.5 inches each.
made a big differance in the look of the truck, and the way it handled on the road.
then, due to an accident while working on the truck, it sat again.
i drive it about once a week or so.
Other than that, it just sits.
until now
So this past week i decided to get started.
I guess it was friday night or saturday when i decided to start working on it full tilt and TRY to get it ready in time for sbn.
so i pulled it back in the garage, and now, that's where i live again lol
because i only paid 300 for the truck, i have no desire to pay big money to a shop to fix all the body work the "right" way.
so i'm just fixing everything the ghetto way.
Ie: bondo and fiberglass
i SUCK ASS big time at bondo and body work.
I get impatient with sanding, and can never get the shit smooth like it should be.
So the body work will be pretty ghetto, but good enough to shoot it with good primer from the gun, and make it look descent enough to drive.
(and most certainly better than it looked.)
the first thing i wanted to do was expand the cutout.
Since i knew now that the truck was goign to compete in dbdrag instead of being a show truck.
To i expanded out the cutout and got it ground down nice and smooth, and ready for the boot and new shell.
Next up, was to shave the antenna.
i just removed the antenna, and hammered the area around it down a little.
Then layed in some self adhesive metal backing for bondo into the square.
Covered & filled it with fiberglass reinforced bondo, sanded and shot it with some rattle can primer for now.
not TOO bad, considering i am NOT a body or paint guy.
Time to move on to the bed repairs.
(dont forget, i admittedly SUCK at body work.
So dont waste your time or mine telling me "you did it wrong" or "that body work sucks" ...
Because I ALREADY KNOW.
)
so, first i sanded down all the rough spots, dings, dents, and factory sticker pin stripes.
then i started applying my big massive nasty looking gobs of fiberglass reinforced bondo (i like that so much beter than regular bondo)
then i waited for it to dry.
Watched a movie. sanded it down, and shot some rattle can primer on it for the time being.
Not toooo bad for a non body guy.
Time to move over to the passenger side.
this side was ab it trickier.
It has a HUGE rust hole over the wheel.
The "right way" would be to cut it out beyond where any rust is, and weld in new sheet metal.
Or just rplace the whole panel.
but...
Nah, no time, money, or desire, for that.
so, its back to the tried and true..
Ghetto fiberglass fix.
at this point, the hole is not finished.
But i ran out of resin :( lol
so.
I decided to stop for the night.
Get a little rest (its now 6:30 am lol )and start again tommorrow, after a trip to auto supply store.
Went home and transferred the pics.
forgot my other card that had the floor pics.
So here are jsut the roof pics for now.
roof nice and stripped down.
Metal prep already done.
Ready for some mat.
first layer done on the passenger side.
first layer done on the drivers side.
i'm crisscrossing the layers for the roof because its nice and flat, and easy to work with.
(normally i overlap each piece over the previoud piece, to get the 2 layers.)
second layer done on drivers side.
second layer done on passenger side.
roof.
B-pillar, and a-pillar all done.
will post up pics of the floor later today.
As well as the final body work on the cab.
shooting the cab with its final black primer tonight or tommorrow.
Some more progress.
not a lot.
Relatively speaking.
Had an event today, so i didnt get muc haccomplished on friday or saturday.
And nothing today.
but here goes.
finished all the sound deadening on the interior.
Last on the plate was the floor.
Two layers across it.
Done.
Gotta run out for a bit.
Will be back soon.
Then i'll post up some more
comments are welcome of course lol

Looking badass, so are you gonna be at SBN?
I'm thinking of running down there after work on saturday but I'll have to be back up for work at noon on sunday.

not installing the carpet till after its painted though.

Started sanding the body.
REAL primer never really bonds very well with rattle can primer.
Not to mention, rattle can primer never really bonds real well with the trucks previous paint.
so time to sand it down to the factory paint so the new expensive primer will stick
that's as far as i got before i bailed out for the weekend, toget ready for todays competition with the car.
should be able to finish sanding the cab tommorrow night after work.
And god willing, be able to lay down the primer on the cab on tusday, and POSSIBLY the bed primer as well.
we'll see.
more pics as they come

Ok been non-stop busy..
But here are some updates..
more to follow:
the whole cab is painted now.
Though these pics dont show the completion.
(compelted pics are in the camera in the garage lol)
started wet sanding yesterday, and put all the window moldings and weatherstripping back together.
painting the interior panels and the headliner and dash tommorrow.
the truck, minus the bed, will be rolling out of the garage sunday night
then i just still need to work on the bed and paint it.
once the bed is done, then i'm going to paint the color changing graphics on the whole truck.
Havent started them yet, because i'm stil lworking on different designs.
anyway, here's some more pics to hold ya over.
More updates. needed to take a break from the exterior.
So i started on the interior.
painted the b-pillar panels black.
They were two different shades of grey.
painted the a-pillar shale blue to sorta match the bucket seats.
They were grey.
painted the door panels shale blue to match the seats.
They were dark greyish brown.
painted the headliner shale blue.
It was light grey.
painted the kick panels black.
They were dark grey.
Painted the visors black.
They were light grey.
painted the floor boards black.
They were dark grey.
and some completed pics.
i also painted, as you can see in the pic above, the window cranks, door handles, and arm rests.
Painted them all black.
They were light grey.
will be painting the dash black tongiht, and thedash trim in shale blue.
when its done.
The roof and a-pillar will be blue, with black trim (visors and mirror).
The b-pillar and floor will be black.
the dash will be black with blue trim.
And the doors are blue with black trim.
and then the new black carpet, and the blue seats.
after i paint the dash tonight, i am going to ATTEMPT to finish the exterior of the cab tommorrow since its my day off.
only 60 days to SBN and i havent even started the enclsoure yet.
Hell, i dont even have the bed painted or mounted yet
Painted the bed today.
canopy tommorrow
Well, if you've been following along, you know i had no intentions of painting the truck.
It was ONLY going to get the flat black primer.
well, i didnt like the way the primer looked after it was wet sanded, it turned sort of grey :(
and i didnt like it not being sanded because it held any and all dirt or dust that touched it.
but, i was still in a dilema, because i did not want to spend money on color or clear coats, since i did the ghetto body work.
well, while working in the garage, i found i still had a half gallon of blue pearl that i had laid over the top of the white on my buick.
So i figured why not, i'll give it a try.
on my buick, the blue pearl is VERY hard to see, the light has to be jsut right for it to jump out at you.
so i figured i'd throw it on the truck to protect the primer a little.
i was totally NOT expecting the result i got when it was done..
it was 3 am.
And i liked it so much i ran out to meijer and picked up 10 cans of clear coat ratle can just to protect it :D lol
so, while i'm waiting to finish fixing my computer so i can download the rest of my pics...
Here is a quick preview
blue pearl laid on white, on my buick,
and, the SAME can of blue pearl, mixed the same way, but laid directly on the black primer on the truck...
and as your angle and lighting changes...
It flips from black to the speckled blue :D :D :D
this was totally unexpected, i was only goign to put it on there to protect the primer a little.
 MAXXSONICS BLUE

Well here are some back pics..
Havent been able to upload the last few days, as my computer had crashed.
back up and running now.
So here's some more pics...
completed primer on the bed
i had to put in some sheetmetal on the front of the bed, for the lip on the boot to attach to.
Since the front wall of the bed had been disconnected, even before i did the cutout.
Wile i was at it, i cut down the back wall of the cab a few more inches, and attached sheetmetal to it as well, so i would have a nice straight surface for the boot.
Instead of hassling with all the curves of the factory back wall.
time to put the camper on
here is what happens when you dont feel like walking to the other side of the garage to get the degreaser, and instead use lacquer thinner to clean the camper shell, and subsequently spill some on the freshly primered bed...
ok, time to attach the boot.
I was told that the boot lip only had to be slipped over the sheetmetal.
No adhesive required.
Well, there is going to be a wall completely covering the boot.
So if it ever came loose, there will be no chance of fixing it, without tearing out the wall.
So i used some heavy duty commercial grade, weatherstripping adhesive sealant to attach the boot all the way around.
And, before anyone notices it...
The spaces between the factory back wall, and the sheetmetal i put in, have already been filled with expanding foam, and backed with fiberglass and fleece, to keep the water out and the air in.
next up was to replace the missing window on the camper shell
a funny thing happened while replacing the window...
The rubber seal around the window, has a small rubber cord in thecenter of it.
The cord is there to keep the seal tight against the window and keep it from popping out.
well, my missing window had a seal thankfully, but did not have a cord..
so i had to improvise
yes, i used an old twisted blue/silver pair of rca cables :D i just cut the ends off, and trimmed it to size.
It was exactly the same diameter of the factory rubber cord
when it gets a little primer and paint, you'll never even notice ;)
that's all for now...
pics of the completed base paint should be up in a day or two now
comments are always welcome...
Good, bad, or indifferant..
That's what this thread is here for.

In a hurry, gotta go work for the superbowl.
but, here are some quick photo's.
Paint is done.
started the enclosure today.
Have a comp next weekend, so it looks like i'm making a repeat of finals....
With an 8 day build lmao.
and here is the bottom frame for the enclosure.
Got this far today, in three hours.
:D
building the side walls tonight after work !
more soon.
Some more pics.
here's some closer pics of the front half of the frame.
As you can see, where it passes into the cab,.
There is a 2x4 in the bed, a 2x4 in the cab, and a 2x4 between them going over the accordian boot.
nice and stiff there at the opening!
most of the windows in the cap were leaking at one place or another, and since they are painted from the outside anyway, i just opted to seal them up with caulk.
I sealed the edge where the modling meets the shell and where the window meets the molding.
at some point between now and finals, all the windows are getting pulled, and fiberglassed, so it didnt really matter if the caulk job was nice.
Speacially since the box will completely hide the windows from view anyway.
and now the construction of the side walls is finally underway
also, all the 2x4's on the bottom frame are glued and screwed to each other.
The bottoms are coated in liquid nails and attached to the bed floor.
And then at various points, they are screwed to the bed floor as well.
It aint movin!
the side walls are just mocked up in these pics right now, to get everything laid out.
So they are not glued in place, and there is only one screw holding each of them where they are.
Basically jsut so i can make sure everything is perfectly lined up and even/level, etc...
And to make sure i know how i want to do the top frame.
And also utilize as much space as possible.
As soon as i'm confidant everything is good to go, then the side frame will all be glued and screwed as well.
Well, here is the rest of last nights progress.
should be ready for sunday's show in cleveland :D
the mdf in this picture is not actually mounted though, its just sitting there temporarily so i oculd make sure that all the top angled boards are lined up properly.
And to make sure everything is square and straight.
i received some goodies the last couple days as well.
UPS is starting to really like me
i wonder what on earth are in these boxes

H so just how much bigger is an 18 than a 12
this is HALF of my wire order.
The other half will arrive on thursday or friday.
Total after the other shipment gets here..
160' of 0g (4 - 40 foot rolls.
10 runs of power and 10 runs of ground.
)
2 sets of 20' Ultra Stuff series rca cables
2 sets of male/female y cables
100 crimp ring connectors for the power
and of course, my new team shirt, and vinyl for the truck.
tommorrow i am heading to columbus to have my 12"mt reconed to an 18" mt
i've never done one yet, and with the cost of a recone, i want it done right, so a team mate is doing it for me.
I'll be taking pics of the teardown of the 12, and the recone to an 18 for those that would like to see a complete how-to on reconing.
Expect to see those posted tommorrow night.
Along with more build pics
Well here's some updated pics.
on the way to the last team build and competition, the truck broke down halfway
i was impressed to tell the truth.
the airbags didnt arrive until 2 hours AFTER i left to drive to the show.
the truck still had 4" drop blocks installed in the rear, and the torsion bars in the front dropped all the way.
the bed was holding : 5 sheets of 3/4" mdf, 48 2x4's, 2 autotek mm4000's, 2 goliath 3215's, 1 re mt 12, 1 re mt 18 recone kit, 1 directed 5212, 320' of 1/0 wire, my stand up rolling battery charger, 6 boxes of screws, 4 drills, 2 jigsaws, 1 router, 2 circular saws, 1 sawlzawl, 2 blankets, 2 pillows, my meter, 2 duffle bags of clothes, a cooler of pop, and ofcourse, me and my daughter.
needless to say the truck was WELL weighted down.
And hitting the road with only 2 cylinders firing.
The real problem was that the original shop to check the truck neverbothered to let me know that the thermostat was also closed shut :(
so we made it halfway, about 50 miles, before the truck overheated :(
we waited three hours for the tow truck to pick us up :(
anyway, here's some pics....
nicely weighted down rear end.
making the most of the situation
wake me up when the tow truck gets here.
all ab rd
gently, slowly,
i guess we're a little low.
They didnt need that extra pavement anyway.
time to roll out!
on the road again lol
we dont want to run outta gas now do we.
finally, we're there.
Looks a little darker now :(
.
We left home at 11:00 am.
Its normally a 1 and a half hourdrive.
Expected to be there in about 2 1/2 with the truck we got there at 7:00 :( :( :(
today, the team mechanic got the head pulled.
Needs a new gasket and head.
does this gasket look blown to you :D
notice teh groove between the two cylinders..
the build will be back on schedule soon enough
I got "sorta air bags" lol
i didnt want to invest in real bags, since its an spl only vehicle.
After its done competing (after world finals) i'll moving on to my next vehcile for next season.
THEN the truck becomes a daily driver and i can start customizing it the way i originally intended.
i plans for a full blown bag setup, notched, bridged, possibly body dropped, etc...
I really want it to lay frame with probably 18's on it (not a fan of anything bigger than 18's)
anyway, in the meantime, the stock leafs weren't gonna be able to handle all the weight in the rear, so i bought "air helper springs"
simpler version of airbags, that actually attach in addition to the leafs.
They bolt to the top of the stock leafs, and to the frame.
And add an additional 2500# load assist.
not "real" bags.
But they will help ALOT compared to what the stock leafs would do.
not even bothering with a compressor setup at this point.
As the bags can be filled with my garage compressor or any gas station compressor lol
but i will more than likely at least throw a 4 or 5 gallon tank in the bed once the build is done.
And then just keep that filled from my garage compressor, so "just in case" i'll always have some air on hand.
Or, i could just carry my emergency compressor deal that plugs into the cig lighter.
anyway, here's what the bags are like....

These pictures were sent to me by the team mechanic.
Engine has been replaced.
Coolant system has been flushed.
Vacuume lines have been replaced.
Truck is ready for me to pick it up
this is after the old head had been removed (since we though thats all that needed done.
after the discovered the block was cracked too, it was time to get an engine.
Found one in cleveland where the truck has been, for only 350 !!
Empty hole where the transmission was.
Are these suppose to go back in?
Here is what it looks like now.
With the "new" engine put back in.

I leave in the morning for cleveland.
3 day teambuild, competition, and then finally bring the truck back home!
Its been stranded in cleveland for over a month
can't wait to get back to work on it.
this weekend, a LOT os getting done to it.
For starters, the entire back is being rebuilt.
As i understand it, my teammates gutted the back yesterday because they weren't entirely happy with the strength.
so its being redone when i get there in the morning.
but, there will be about 7 or 8 people working on it, so alot is going to be accomplished in a short period of time.
more pics on monday after i get back home.

Quote: Looking badass, so are you gonna be at SBN?
I'm thinking of running down there after work on saturday but I'll have to be back up for work at noon on sunday.
i had full intentions on SBN once upon a time.
That's why i started rambo-ing the truck.
but with all that needed done to it, the funds just werent available.
tires, exhaust, head, engine, paint, the build, etc....
the trip to sbn, between gas, hotel, entry fee, food, drinks, partying, etc..
Would cost in excess of a grand.
Not possible for me, since i had to buy all the crap.
not to mention, the engine was just put in, this past weekend, so it hasnt even been on a test drive yet (the plates expired since its been sitting in cleveland) so when i get there tommorrow it'll get the new sticker for the plate, and go on its first test drive.
with sbn being this weekend, i would have had to leave today to head down there .
(that was the original plan)
there are enough 2x and 3x shows up here this summer that its just not necessary to make it down there.
plus we have a huge 3x dbdrag and 3x meca event at maxxsonics world headquarters this summer
