UKMIX - Forums - TV & Film - Media and Movies, Short-Films
I've never felt media to be especially strong or powerful in the telling of a story.
In the relatively short time-span, the plot can not become too complicated.
I've felt the drama serials and books are a stronger medium than movies.
Maybe this is because I was exposed to these more than movies in my childood.
Do you feel that movies(art or otherwise) are an especially strong medium, and why?

I definitely do, yes.
Obviously a lot of the time, provoking an emotional reaction isn't a prime objective for a lot of movies, but I do believe film can "touch" you.
Most of the examples coming to mind are coming up in my movie countdown so I won't name them, but films like Set It Off, American History X, The Accused and Boyz N The Hood are all strong, powerful films that left a lasting impression.

Definately, perhaps even more so than books.
With a film you get the sounds and the sights, and if the acting is good you can really connect with the story and the message that is being conveyed.
The Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile, Forrest Gump, Donnie Darko, American Beauty (though pretty wierd and frankly not the best film I've ever seen), Saving Private Ryan, Philadelphia (sorry for using so many Tom Hanks films but basicaly he is the greatest actor in the world at present, nobody comes close, he is serious, funny, true to life, emotion stirring and anybody who says otherwise has me to answer to) all connect amazingly with the audience in a way which no other medium can.
Through the use of music, visual effects, great cinemaography, direction and camera work you can not only understand the story to a new degree, but can appreciate what the story is trying to say.
Naturally films like Die Hard, Fast and The Furious, The Mask etc have no message and are for mere entertainment, but the scripts that say something can only truely come to life in film.
As said above, these films can leave a lasting impression, and even if this only lasts for 1 minute after you walk out the cinema or the rest of your life, it's made a difference, it has changed your perception of the world, and made you look at life in a slightly different way.
Can you honestly say that you have never seen a film which hasn't moved you, or sent that chill up your spine (I'm not talking of scary films here), or made you feel an emotion, deep inside, of understanding or happiness or sadness?
If not, I feel sorry for you, and if you have then this is the essence of quality film making and was definately worth the time and money spent.
