Flickr: The Help Forum: Flickr has been very slow lately

For the past few days I've had trouble accessing anything on Flickr.

It takes minutes, sometimes I just give up.

Is it just me?

"Is it just me?" ..maybe ..I've been on Flickr 6-8 hours a day lately and haven't observed any slowness ..the likely answer is that there is a (temporary) problem or bottleneck in one of the many servers, routers, relays, etc.

Somewhere between your ISP and the Yahoo-Flickr servers and over which neither your ISP nor Flickr has any real control

Groups? Sets? Photos? Firefox has a very good tool to have at hand is an extension called Firebug.

And this page shows you how it times individual page elements (images, CSS and Javascript files) as they load into your browser. Also, Is it the same in Safari? Last, the output from traceroute using the terminal might help: traceroute www.flickr.com Thanks!

Everything has been slow, in both Firefox & Safari.

Just getting back to this forum page took about 10 minutes, and a link I clicked on from Twitter about the same.

Actually now that I look at Safari, things are taking even longer there. I installed Firebug but don't have time to read the docs on it right now. I've been running a traceroute for at least 5 minutes now, I don't see the point in continuing.

I find that using picnik editor from flickr really slows everything down.

Sometimes it just freezes up in firefox.

That, and doing some diagnostics back to where you are posting from don't reveal any obvious problems.

Checking your account specifically, nothing obvious we can duplicate (database looks fine).

Not sure what's wrong from browsing from that end.

Do you see any specific server names loading a long time, down in the status bar at the footer of your browser?

If you can try the Firebug extension, it would be useful to see what you get.

Us.adserver.yahoo.com has been a real problem.

Earlier I noticed a long delay with l.yimg.com.

L.yimg.com is where Javascript files are hosted, and there are account stats that are taken from us.adserver.yahoo.com.

When you wait for something to load from there, it causes the page to load slowly.

I suspect you would see the same problem if you visited other Y!

Sites at the present time.

Would you mind running the same traceroute to each of those please?

Lastly, also do this from a terminal- nslookup us.adserver.yahoo.com [hit enter/return] nslookup l.yimg.com [hit enter/return] If from the traceroute it looks like something we'll need to pass on to the engineers who work on those network assets, we would want to get the output of that as well (if there's anything else we need after, we'll let you know too). Edit: Oh, also- while there may indeed be something bottlenecked somewhere between you and where those servers are, do try something simple like restarting network hardware like router/cable modem, just for good measure.

If there's still something up after that, which there may very well be, getting the diagnostic information would be swell.

We seem to having a little trouble on the farm.

Farm 1 East and West, and Farm 2 Global and East are having lots of trouble at the moment.

Flickr has been slow for months now - page loading, leaving comments, checking recent activity, connecting to uploadr, etc etc etc. Sometimes it's fine but most of the time it's not - frustratingly slow to do most things.

Clearing the cache improves things for a day or so but causes problems elsewhere with having to re-sign in to everything.

That's a pain in itself. No-one seems to give a rat's Yahoo.

Now Farm 2 East showing red X as well.

Hello SunCat and scorpius, We did have some farm2 woes around the time when you were posting -- these seem to be resolved. I'm also seeing some reds there on farm1 east and west, so will look into it. Thanks.

Also have massive problems with us.adserver.yahoo.com and also with l.yimg.com today and before. Flickr pages loading awfully slow and always one graphic (it seems invisible) is missing, but this makes the web page unusable as links are not clickable until its not loaded completely.

Furthermore the css arent loaded frequently which causes the pages looks awfully. its really annoying.

PC and internet hardware was restarted several times in the last few days with no effect. Other pages are loading fast as usual.
