Is Logitech's Setpoint software a buggy POS... - Quarter To Three Forums

...or is it just me? I've got an MX-518 corded mouse and the latest Setpoint software doesn't work right under a pretty fresh install of XP Pro 32 bit.

I want to set the little buttons in front and behind the mouse wheel to be "cruise up" and "cruise down" (i.e.

Fast scroll for the web) and the down one makes the screen scroll a bit, then hitch, then continue.

No such problem with an older version, but a little while ago it apparently caused a BSOD and abrupt reboot. Is there any third-party open source software for mice?

The Windows mouse control panel isn't cutting it (doesn't appear to support mouse pointer acceleration, for one thing).

You can get a bit of mouse pointer acceleration with the Windows default drivers by checking the "Enhance Pointer Precision" option. Can't help you with the rest, I'm using my Logitech G9 without custom drivers but that's just because I'm happy with the Windows default drivers.

I have had lots of problems with it in the past, but for now it's working fine with Vista 64 (surprisingly).

Version 4.60.122 Every once in awhile when I wake it from sleep my scroll wheel doesn't act like it should, but if I quit and relaunch SetPoint Settings it works again.

I've heard it's crappy, yeah. I've got an MX5000 Desktop kit, with the MX1000 mouse.

I've switched to Mac OS X and I refuse to install Logitech's buggy software on my system.

Everyone seems to say that what is unstable on Windows is even worse on OS X.

I'm still looking for something to take advantage of all the buttons on the mouse, and all the keys on the keyboard, that isn't produced by Logitech.

How they make such good hardware and such poor software remains a bit of a puzzle to me.

If you're going to invest in good engineers, get some solid coders, too!

I've never had any trouble with the setpoint software for my MX1000 in either Vista 64 or OSX 10.5.

I've had problems with Setpoint occasionally, once in a long while, disabling my custom control scheme.

There are no alternatives but you should always install UberOptions after.

Any recommendations for a good corded optical mouse with similar ergonomics (I really like the way the 518 and the 510 before it fit my right hand) and with two buttons for fast crusing (so I don't wear out my scroll wheel)?

Anything produced by another manufacturer?

I hate Setpoint. I have my G9's sensitivity set up so that I need it on the highest speed to work well, (high res, low sensitivity) but every time I restart my computer it resets itself to the slowest speed, no matter what I do.

It's only a matter of hitting a button on the mouse a couple of times, but it's still annoying.
