Eagle Scout - RimfireCentral.com Forums
CONCORD, N.H.** Eagle Scout Scott Mason kept his cool as overnight temperatures dropped around New Hampshire's Mount Washington, building a rock cave to protect himself from the mountain's notorious winds after being stranded in the wilderness.
The 17-year-old from Halifax, Mass., was found Tuesday, after rising water and deep snow stranded him for three nights.
He was discharged Wednesday from a hospital after being treated for a painful leg.
Fish and Game Lt.
Douglas Gralenski said Mason hunkered down Saturday and Sunday nights below treeline in a bivvy bag a waterproof sleeping bag shell that can be used as an emergency sleeping bag.
Mason built fires each morning.
Gralenski said the teen built a small cave from rocks Monday night to protect himself from the wind.
It's good too see that Boy's are still getting taught.
I was a Boy Scout and learned a lot!!!
Depending on the climate you have to juggle.
(Food, Water, Shelter) Knowing how might keep you alive.
What did being in the Scout's teach you???

Independence.
I was in Webelos and we were supposed to memorize something or other.
I had most of it down but not all.
As punishment the leader (who I didn't like to begin with because his son was a jerk too) said I had to run laps around the church.
I got half way around the building, realized I was pointing towards home and never looked back.
Independence!

Guy22 Nothing sad about it.
That was just the last straw, other factors were involved.

The sad part is you had a jerk for a Scoutmaster or Den Father or whatever.

Well, like I said, other factors were involved.
Only one of the other kids was a friend that I went to school with, and the church wasn't my personal congregation, so I didn't feel bad or sad or miss running around with my buddies.

Unfortunately, the Boy Scouts failed me miserably.
At the first meeting of the newly organized Scout meeting, they spent an hour making us learn different knots.
This was to a group of rural, East Texas boys who had been roaming the creeks and woods, building campfires, hunting and cooking what we killed, and setting throwlines and limb lines since we was old enough to see over the top of a water bucket.
If I recall, the first meeting was the last one for me and my friends.
I think a few hung on out of sympathy for the scoutmaster.

I want to apologize to the OP for any negativity in my posts.
I believe the BSA provides a valuable and positive experience to many youngsters who would otherwise not have those opportunities.

Guy22 Webelos = We'll be loyal scouts
That was as far as I made it too unfortunatly there was very little interest from others in the pack to continue on to Boy Scouts Too bad because I really enjoyed it.
My wifes young cousin just made Eagle around last Christmas.

The progression of awards in Cubs
They dropped "Lion" in the 70's
Scouting takes alot of care in the training of it's adult volunteer leaders.
When some jerk thinks it's about discipline and not about having orderly FUN is one of the reasons half the boys drop-out within the first year.
Typically only 1/50 boys stay with the program to ultimately earn their Eagle.
Both my brother and I earned such, with the gudance of a lot of patient, caring men who had great stories to tell around the campfire.
A 14 year old boy working as a Counselor in Training at SummerCamp
is about as great as it gets!

Got mine Nov 18, 2001.
Had a great time, learned alot.
Much richer for the experience.
Plus it is neat when someone sees the inside of my wallet.
Eagle Scout, Life NRA Member, Blood donor, Marrow donor, and my selective service cards all in a row.

I got my Eagle Scout on May 12th, 2007.
What did I learn?
Biggest skills I acquired include tying a myriad amount of knots (and a handful that are actually useful), building safe and useful fires, orienteering, and a heck of alot of outdoors and survival skills.
Most importantly, the last couple years for me in Troop 12 Mankato were spent as the Senior Patrol Leader, meaning I was the highest ranking scout in the troop.
It was more invaluable leadership experience dealing with many different people in many different situations that has formed who I am today.
I was in Boy Scouts from being a Tiger Cub to my 18th birthday.
If you've got kids around that age, especially younger, I seriously encourage you to give your kids the option of joining Scouts.
Don't force them, but encourage them.
It'll be worth it.
On a side note, Scott Mason earns my Medal of Awesomeness.

To be prepared~ from Cub Scouts.
I skipped Boy Scouts due to lack of funds.
I managed later to go to Sea Scouts which I enjoyed immensely and helped with my continued life on inland waters and L.
Superior.
