Helmets & Gear: To Those Who Ride Motorcycles & Bicycles.... - Bike Forums
Given the mention of a motorcycle crash in another thread on helmets, I'm curious to hear back from folks who ride bicycles and motorcycles on public roads and intermixed with pedestrian and vehicular traffic with regard to your helmet & gear wearing habits.
Specifically, if and how often you wear a helmet.
For motorcycles, approved means one that meets the DOT or Snell standards.
Also, if you ride a motorcycle, do you wear full protective gear when riding on the street, aka.
All Gear, All of The Time or AGATT?
By full gear, that would mean motorcycle-specific protective Helmet, jacket, pants, gloves and boots.
I would have asked about Some Gear Some of the Time or No Gear Any of the Time but ran out of question categories.

I should have read this before voting.
I voted sometimes for both, but in the environment you outline, it's never for both.
I only wear a bicycle helmet when required by some event and a motorcycle helmet when riding on roads where I am doing over 50-60mph.
As far as gear...on a motorcycle I wear jeans, shirt & boots...jacket and gloves if the weather dictates.

I saw that, but was looking for a different type of sampling.

No, I think you answered correctly for what you describe.
Sometimes is sometimes unless the cycling events you attend are ridden on a closed course and your 50-60 mph motorcycle outings are done only off-road or on a track.

Always an approved helmet on the MC and most of the time on the bicycle.

Always on the MC, and usually on the bicycle...
Unless just cruising on the boardwalk.
Always when mixing it up with motor traffic.
Sure a styrofoam hat ain't gonna help if I get creamed by a 40MPH+ light runner...
But if I get nudged or bumped and go down, I have a much better chance of saving the noggin.

No MC -- everything is pedal....
I'd rather ride around with an azz cheek hanging out then w/o a helmet.
YMMV.

Rarely ride a bicycle with a helmet, mostly only when required for a ride.
Always ride a motorcycle with a helmet.
Why?
Because that's what the research points to as the safest behaviors, at least with regard to helmets.
Also, one should remember that the risk of serious injury is not linearly correlated with speed.

Yeah, but the stuff that can boink you on the head and face hurt more at 50mph+ without a helmet.

Almost always on the bicycle.
Occasionally I'll go without.
Always on the Moto.
It's the law, but I would anyways.
I usually wear a full-face, but will sometimes wear a half helmet.
The full face is the most comfortable even in hot weather - go figure.
Not Atgatt, but usually wear my textile jacket, gloves, hiking boots.
I still just wear jeans for now

Checking back in, I see what appears to be a trend where the data is being significantly skewed by cyclists who do not ride motorcycles...
Oh well.
So much for a sample from cyclist - motorcyclists.

Always a helmet on my bicycle.
Haven't figured out why I wouldn't want to.
ATGATT on my motorcycle, including a slide suit and a full-face helmet.

Helmets on both, sometimes gloves, always closed-toe shoes.
I should wear all the gear on the motor, but don't.
My daughter and her boyfriend recently slid out on wet pavement on his motorcycle.
Very luckily no life threatening injuries.

You should have made your intentions more obvious, perhaps by titling it "To Those Who Ride Both Motorcycles & Bicycles." As it was, it could be interpreted as "those who ride either bicycles or motorcycles , or both ." I wasn't sure what you meant, so I read through the thread before taking the poll.
In your very first message, you said, "Also, if you ride a motorcycle , do you wear full protective gear when riding on the street" which implied that you expected only some of the respondents to be motorcycle riders.
Fortunately, I read far enough down to get to your complaint about "skewed" results, so I ended up not taking the poll after all.
However, it shouldn't be necessary to read down to the 11th message in a thread to find out what the poll taker wanted.
By the way, I never wear a helmet on bicycles, but always would wear one on motorcycles if I rode them.

I don't ride a motorcycle;
Just a bicycle.
Whenever I ride, I wear a SNELL approved helmet.
I don't ride without one.

You really want a cross-tab with bicycle helmets on one axis and motorcycle helmets on the other.

When I rode a motorcycle on the road, I always wore all the gear, all the time.
Full face helmet, boots, gloves, jacket, long pants.
However, after getting hit head on by an SUV (luckily at low speed), where I was completely not at fault, I gave up riding on the road.
Even if you are doing everything right, there are idiots out there.
I raced motorcycles on the track for a while, which is much safer (and much more fun) than riding on the road, but I've given that up also and jsut ride bicycles now.

I don't ride a motorcycle anymore, but did for 19 years.
ATGATT for me then, and that's how I answered.
I still feel naked riding the bicycle with the helmet and gloves being my only safety gear, but it's helped me in both of my bicycle crashes.

On my motorbike, Honda Goldwing, I wear an Aerostich Darien Riding Suit, with full armor in the jacket and pants, deerskin/elkskin gloves, and lace up boots.
A full face helmet (Shoei) rounds out the safety gear.
My currrent motorbike has over 200,000 miles on it, and I have many Iron Butt Association Certificates.

My wife and I both wear full-gear when we ride two-up on the R1150RT -- Shoei Multitec, CE armor to to bottom, boots, gloves -- and I do the same on my daily commuter, an R1100S.
I've also got Moto-lights and MotoEquip 3M reflective case covers on both bikes.
However, like a lot of motorcyclist-bicyclists we find ourselves bombing down mountain roads at 60 mph on our tandem or sharing shoulder-less roads with distracted motorists wearing nothing more than spandex underwear and a EPS 'hat' and simply shake our heads: you do indeed feel 'nekkid' and exposed on the bicycle.
Even given the apparent dichotomy, I don't foresee us putting on more gear when cycling or motorcycling in anything less than AGATT.
However, I am starting to consider running head and tail lights during daylight hours on our bicycles when we're not otherwise riding in a pack and out on our own in the urban & suburban jungles.
It can't hurt... and, as others have noted, it sure does seem like we're loosing more friends of late;
Quite disconcerting to say the least.

Interesting, with 51 responses recorded of which only 40 were collected for motorcycle helmet wear, here's how it stacks up when percentages for the motorcycle helmet wearing responses are recalculated against the 40 total responses received:
60.78% = Bicycle Helmet All of the Time
87.50% = Motorcycle Helmet All of the Time
_7.50% = Motorcycle Helmet Only Because Required
95.00% = Motorcycle Helmet Worn All of the Time
27.45% = Bicycle Helmet Some of the Time
_ 5.0% = Motorcycle Helmet Some of the Time
9.8% = Bicycle Helmet None of the Time
0.0% = Motorcycle Helmet None of the Time (Unexpected, but maybe not: after all this is a bicycle forum)

Motorcycle- every ride
bicycle- never, but I always wear gloves
On the motorcycle I generally wear boots and leathers, always on a trip of any distance, just a jacket on a short commute, but gloves always.
