Are you ever to tired to sleep? - Health and Wellness - City-Data Forum

If I do not sleep well on on night I have a terrible time getting to sleep the next evening.

To keep me going during the day after I did not sleep I have to drink lots of coffee or coke and keep eating lots of sugary foods.

If I do not do this I am shot and am worthless to the world. So evening comes and I am sick tired but to tired to sleep.

Does this happen to you?

Yes it does.

You're too stimulated to sleep and then too tired to do without the stimulation of caffeine and sugar. It's a cycle that you would be wise to break. If this means going through a period of time where you are not functioning optimally then so be it because this kind of stress will most likely wear you down and create pre-mature aging and illness. If you're constantly in a "fight or flight" mode, depletion will be the result. When you are so depleted and so stressed, rest is very difficult. You know that you're tired but your system is too wired to rest. Somehow, you need to find a way to bring your system into balance and learn how to rest and relax . Just taking some time out of a busy day and getting quiet and still would be a good start. Lay down with your feet just elevated enough so they are above your heart and do some deep breathing (with the exhale just a bit longer than the inhale) and relax. If you're so wound up, unwind ing and relaxing will present a challenge but it's important. You're running on empty and dependent on stimulants which is not the same as energy or vitality. And then, you're not getting the sleep you need to rejuvenate. There are a lot of ways to address what is going on but it's helpful to have some kind of basic understanding of the problem.

Why don't you try eating fruit and less caffeine.

It should help too, but won't leave you up the next night as well.

Having a yogi detox tea before dinner can help you feel calm if you already o.d.ed on the sugar and caffine though. Valerian tea is great for those nights when you can't sleep.

Tylenol Pm too..but oooh..next day I am STILL dead from that stuff.

It used to, back when I was still working (over the road truck driver).

In fact, I lived that way for over 30 years. Tips: 1.

Protein keeps you awake.

Carbohydrates make you drowzy.

Skip the sugary snacks and have something like jerky.

Better yet, eat nothing at all. 2.

Too much coffee will load your system with stimulants, but still make you sleepy.

It warms the stomach, which warms the blood, which induces drowziness....but, you've got too much caffeine in you to sleep.

Limit yourself to 2 cups. 3.

Short naps, as little as 5 minutes, can be a lifesaver.

And, you CAN learn to take very brief naps.

Look at a clock and note the time;

Consciously and deliberately tell yourself what time you need to get up, outloud;

Close your eyes and rely on your internal clock to awaken you at the right time.

It rarely fails. 4.

When your body gets tired enough, IT WILL SLEEP...no matter where you are or what you're doing.

You won't be able to prevent it shutting down.

Just pray you're not driving when it does.

Learn your limits. 5.

Severe fatigue leads to poor judgment and hallucinations.

Remember all those stories you've heard about truck drivers seeing elephants in the road or imaginary trains?

That wasn't pills which caused that, it was fatigue. 6.

When you finally do get the chance to sleep, deliberately clear your mind and start relaxing your muscles, one at a time, beginning with the tongue.

It's the most tense muscle in your body and will keep you awake, whether you know it or not.

Work down to your feet from there.

You probably won't make it past your knees before going to sleep. Sleep as long as you can.

You'll probably wake up within 2-4 hours, but don't force yourself to stay in bed.

Get up and stay busy until you feel sleepy again.

The next time you lie down, you'll be there for 8-12 hours.
